to expect Tesco's to have at least one bottle of water?

My online shop is packed at the Enfield Dotcom branch (so is a warehouse, not a customer facing store).

At least four times in the last couple of months they have not delivered the Volvic 1.5L bottled water I asked for as they are 'out of stock' and have not offered a replacement.

Are they seriously telling me they don't have a single large bottle of water of any brand within their reach?

This is WATER. Not an organic black truffle mushroom. Not Hemp milk sweetened with rare berries. WATER.

It does sound a bit weird

Have you emailed them?

DisappointedOne · 19/01/2015 17:50

Have you no taps?!

LadyLuck10 · 19/01/2015 17:52

I had the same issue one week with apples! Apples FFS

cakedup · 19/01/2015 17:58

I have emailed them. They claim there were no available substitutions. No water, of any kind, in their warehouse, which I'm guessing is pretty big. Bigger than say, the smallest independent grocery shop I can think of, who are fully stocked with water.

kinkyfuckery apples? APPLES? Have you no apple trees??

Tesco are cheeky. They're supposed to give you a replacement item and not charge more, but I reckon half the time they just say there's no suitable substitution so that they're not out of pocket.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 19/01/2015 18:01

I thought it was connected to the enfield branch at the back Blush. Was gonna say surely if they're completely out they could get some off the shop floor

silveroldie2 · 19/01/2015 18:01

Just before Christmas I ordered 1 litre of Baileys - they replaced it with 2 70cl bottles so 1.40 litres for same price. I love Tescos Smile.

Annietheacrobat · 19/01/2015 18:01

I've had that with a sliced white loaf before. FFS.

cakedup · 19/01/2015 18:17

kinkyfuckery and Annietheacrobat - are you with Tesco?

I've thought that before Gawjushun but Volvic is not the cheapest of waters. They could give me some of that Scottish Highland stuff or their own brand. Or even loads of smaller bottles?

silveroldie2 that was a good touch! It does work out in the customer's favour every now and again.

I'm not sure if it is or not Glitz.
Even so, who the bleedin hell was in charge of stocking the shelves in the dot com warehouse? And thought to themselves "I don't think anyone will be wanting any water this week. While I'm at it, I'll cross off the other non-essential items like bread and apples."

I mentioned it to the driver last week, I said that maybe the packers only had a certain amount of time to fulfil each order and ran out of time? "NAH" he replied "It's coz their lazy!". He said the stuff comes out on a conveyor belt and if they miss it the first time round they don't bother to wait or get the items themselves. Something like that. Not sure if that's true.

They had no substitute for a bag of mixed salad leaves last week - really??!!

WaxyBean · 19/01/2015 18:30

They had no substitute for a whole chicken the last time I ordered from them - nothing larger, smaller, organic, free range, flavoured, ready basted or anything else in store suitable as a substitute apparently. I complained - they admitted that they did obviuosly have a whole chicken of some sorts in stocj and it was shoddy service and gave me my delivery charge back (woo-bloody-hoo).

BuzzardBird · 19/01/2015 18:32

I have had this with potatoes, bread and salad. They have got better though since I complained, a lot.

Hatespiders · 19/01/2015 18:38

It's not much better instore. We go to a big superstore Tesco and often half the shelves are blooming empty. It's depressing, like Russia in the fifties.
I asked at the Customer Services desk and was told it was a problem with supply. Well obviously, but why? We go on different days and at different times, but they never seem able to fill their shelves/fridges up.

threepiecesuite · 19/01/2015 18:44

Our cavernous Tesco had no Pepsi last week. I was outraged.

Sternin · 19/01/2015 18:49

Our Tesco has been out of DD's formula for weeks. Click and Collect keeps suggesting completely different brands or types as well. Hmm

GlitzAndGigglesx · 19/01/2015 19:34

I work in a similar place and if we're out of something so essential due to supply problems or replen staff not bringing in products from the warehouse so the item is shown on the system as 'nil', the customer is usually called to be told beforehand. A lot of stuff disappears too when the loaders consolidate the totes because they get confused so dump the shopping anywhere but us pickers are blamed for it 95% of the time!

GlitzAndGigglesx · 19/01/2015 19:35

This is also why I don't do online shopping myself Grin

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 19/01/2015 19:42

What's wrong with Corporation pop?

ToysRLuv · 19/01/2015 19:47

Water?

ToysRLuv · 19/01/2015 19:51

I guess they could have at least fished out an empty bottle from the recycling and filled it up for you from the tap..

SpanielFace · 19/01/2015 19:51

Tesco brought me size 5+ nappies as a substitute for size 3 once. Because, clearly, all sizes of nappy are interchangeable. Hmm

Panzee · 19/01/2015 19:54

Adds this thread to the list of 2million reasons why I won't set foot in Tesco.

SusanIvanova · 19/01/2015 20:07

If the computer they use doesn't list it as a replacement then they can't give you it. Sounds like a fault with their system.

cakedup · 19/01/2015 20:42

You have an option to write notes on your substitute preference. Next to Volvic 1.5 L, I have written 'any water'. Maybe I should write 'wine' and see how that works out.

Panzee I keep meaning to change but wonder if the others are just as bad.

SusanIvanova the customer services agent I emailed said she had contacted the store who claimed the only reason why they would
not provide a substitution is "simply because there are no available substitutions at the time of picking." So, basically, no water. No water anywhere. Not one bottle.
