Perhaps I am not very worldly living up here in Northumberland. I found it really scarey and unlike anything I ever see up here.

Our day to day world up here is, I would say, 98% white British and working/middle class. I never see racism and rarely experience intolerant attitudes being expressed. I was really shocked by the streets of Rotherham and the old ladies cheering and clapping the white nationalist groups. I found all of the groups- the Moslem men and the police and the white nationalists, aggressive and over-reactive. It made me wonder where we are heading.

I see what you're saying, but this undercurrent has existed for a long time in the UK. I find the spread of UKIP more worrying in practice.

The programme was as depressing, though, as these kinds of programmes usually are It's hard to understand why people like that exist, but I try to think of them as an aberration, rather than the norm.

Which is just the reaction that the program-makers were after, I expect. These things always have an agenda - they will have edited out all the live-and-let-live comments.

Is it a repeat? It sounds familiar.

There will always be pockets of hate whatever is happening in a society.
There's always something even if a society is homogeneous; sexism, homophobia etc.

I tend not to worry when they show programs like that because I find England a lovely, tolerant place on the whole.

Did you see it Usedtobe ? It was filmed on the streets in London, Brighton and Rotherham. It was about white nationalist organised groups who travel to demonstrations and events and showed the events. It wasn't made up. I have no idea if that is what much of Britain is like. I suspect it is different to Northumberland which is still pretty wild, remote in many ways and untouched by immigration to any significant extent. The attitudes of the men in all groups were horrible.

Do you not see Racism because you're white?

I've worked in numerous places and lots of people claim never to experience racist attitudes, yet I've encountered this regularly.

I'm white in appearance, my family joke that I'm a genetic throwback, because my children have been born with Brown eyes and Olive skin and mixed heritage appearance. So I have a deep understanding of Racism and people wil be racist in front of me, because I appear fully white/British.

I'm also in my late 40's, do at the start of my working life, Racism/Sexism etc was acceptable and "the way things were".

Colin in the documentary summed up well why young men are attracted to these groups, I've known members of the NF and they are just looking to be accepted, somewhere.

There were false arrests made of group members, which doesn't help attitudes.

It's like we've stamped out Football hooligans, do they've latched on to these groups.

I found it deeply disturbing too. I started a thread about it in Telly Addicts. I think we are living in worrying times and it seems to be escalating on both sides. I don't know where it will all end...

It's not a repeat AFAIK a; they specifically mentioned it was 2014 at one point. But yeah, it felt very familiar as a documentary.

Thing is the program makers take the most extreme examples and present them in a way that looks terrible. It'll also be heavily edited to manipulate the viewer.

I also think for anyone who didn't see it, there was intolerance on both sides.

The main two leaders of the group, made clear that it was Radical Islamists they had issue with.

There will always be neo-nazis, halfwits, and other inadequates who like easy answers and will blame 'the other' for everything wrong with their life. I read today that far right activity is at a 20 year low due to UKIP stealing the thicko racist vote. It's similar to how Thatcher's 'swamped by immigrants' comments strongly dented the NF in 1979.

Luckily, the disparate far right groups (the EDL, BNP, etc) tend to fragment quite easily as they generally can't stand each other. They are forever splitting and forming new sub groups, much like the far left has historically done.

I feel it was extremely counterproductive that the programme-makers would film someone saying something anti-Islamic or anti-Muslim or even just anti-Islamic extremism, which would then be described by the interviewer as "racist". I mean, okay, they definitely probably did have racist attitudes, but it plays into so many of these people's agendas for what they see as the liberal media to describe their views as racist no mater what they are.

I'm the mother of all (tiny) British Muslim. That program sacred the shit out of me. My husband (not British by birth will not go to a mosque here because he didn't want to be in any way associated with the Muslims shown in that program.

I thought all of the groups- white nationalists, police and muslims behaved appallingly. I was shocked by the old ladies cheering and clapping the white nationalist groups in the demonstration in Rotherham. The support. for them from locals out shopping was very open and vehment.

I live in Canada, and it is a rare day that I don't have some Britain First inflammatory shite cross my Facebook news feed.

The spread of the racist front out of the UK is far reaching, indeed.
