Honestly, I was past voting age before I realised someone told me that the Krankies were ancient and one was a lady. I'd not noticed.

TheSpottedZebra · 10/01/2015 19:15

Tiggy - either way will work. Open freezing them will mean that they hopefully don't stick together too much, and freeze more quickly. But if they do stick together, just give the bag a good thwack on he countertop and they'll come apart anyway.

TiggyD · 10/01/2015 19:21

Thank you Spotted. I was afraid I was going to have to set up a new email account so I could rejoin Netmums and ask on there.

Where do you buy onions for 0.75p a kilo?

Birdsgottafly · 10/01/2015 19:29

"" If you want quick onions asian shops have dried onions which are ace""

They're very often not Vegeterian, let alone Vegan and don't work in every dish.

vinegarandbrownpaper · 10/01/2015 19:42

I don't mean the meat onions, just the vegetable ones. .

fredfredgeorgejnr · 10/01/2015 19:52

ACardiganForCat · 10/01/2015 19:55

I will defend the frozen chopped veg to the death. I have a newborn and a 2yr old who wants to poke the baby's eyes all the time. I dont want to risk chopping an onion.

Floppityflop · 10/01/2015 19:58

Frozen onions could change my life. Lazy or not I don't care. Two mins chopping an onion is two mins wasted. How do I have time to Mumsnet? I spend a LOT of my life on trains.

TedAndLola · 10/01/2015 20:11

The risotto in that advert looks foul.

...but I'm tempted by the frozen onions. As far as I know I'm not allergic, but when I chop one I have very painful eyes for 3-4 hours. Whenever it's my turn to cook I have to get someone else to chop the onion for me Blush

fredfredgeorgejnr · 10/01/2015 20:17

FloppityFlop A cheaper solution!

YonicSleighdriver · 10/01/2015 20:20

What is a meat onion?

Pixel · 11/01/2015 01:17

I do chop onions, I even grow them myself on my allotment (how's that for not lazy?) but they cause me extreme agony. I think I might have to give up and opt for frozen ones!

motherinferior · 12/01/2015 10:45

I do not want to chop an onion at 7.50 when I'm making a quick Indian omelette for breakfast. Actually I don't want to chop one at lunchtime, quite often, when my head's full of work. And in any case a one-egg Indian omelette only uses half an onion's worth of chopped onion. I would prefer to keep frozen onions lurking helpfully in the freezer till such moments as they are needed. Ditto frozen spinach. And frozen butternut squash in cubes (makes an effortless soup when shoved in the oven for 30 minutes with spices and blended into stock). And frozen green beans. And even frozen cauliflower, which can also be roasted and turned into soup.

Sallystyle · 12/01/2015 10:52

I hate chopping onions. My eyes hurt for ages after and I can't see fuck all.

So I buy them when I can.

I also love frozen peppers but rarely buy them.

SoupDragon · 12/01/2015 10:53

How about frozen chopped garlic? Best thing ever!

vinegarandbrownpaper · 12/01/2015 18:56

What about frozen water! You just bung it in to a stew with a bit of stock and heat! Its amazing!

SirChenjin · 12/01/2015 20:28

That sounds amazing vinegar! Where can I buy some of this frozen water of which you speak?

chocolateorsalad · 12/01/2015 20:37

I tried frozen chopped onions once but found them a bit shit. They stuck together and the pieces weren't finely chopped the way I like (I don't like to taste the onion in things so I chop them super fine and use the smallest amount).

Now I keep fresh onions in an onion storage bag and they last for two weeks or so. It's just a fabric bag lined with dark fabric and it keeps them fresh. Got it off Amazon.

Frozen peppers made my whole freezer and everything in it smell like peppers.

Trills · 12/01/2015 21:27

motherinferior we need the recipe for that omlette now.

TiggyD · 12/01/2015 21:36

I froze my onions today.

Will report back when I've used them.

vinegarandbrownpaper · 12/01/2015 21:49

You can normally find frozen water in convenient chunks in local Asian shops. They normally have it in blue and white bags. just ask!

As for Frozen Onions, they sound like great murder weapons..

FailOfTheCentury · 12/01/2015 22:03

I actually get my frozen water piped, pre-defrosted, to my house. [smug]

motherinferior · 13/01/2015 10:25

Trills- my version is to chuck a bit of chopped onion, some chopped coriander (also conveniently frozen), a few chopped cherry toms and some chopped green chilli into hot oil, fry up for a bit and then mix in an egg and stir around. V quick and delicious.
