Englishmum is her blog name - I used to read it. They lived abroad for a long time, hence the name. I used to really like her baking recipes but then it became all about promos so I lost interest. And now she's hawking frozen onions on the telly!

Seff · 10/01/2015 12:42

Ultimate lazy fucker for using frozen onion?! I'm not eating it on it's own! It's being used to cook something else. If I was that lazy, I'd live off pizza and ready meals more than I already do

SoupDragon · 10/01/2015 12:42

"How to dice an onion" is one of the few things I learnt at school which has actually been of use.

BlackIvy · 10/01/2015 12:45

"Ultimate lazy fucker if you can't chop an onion" I'll tell that to my sister who has ms and can't chop much. Nasty comment op!!!!

Thingymawotsit · 10/01/2015 12:45

I'm another lazy fucker who likes frozen onions. If I'm chucking stuff into the slow cooker before running off to nursery / work, then it gives me that extra little bit of time.

TheSpottedZebra · 10/01/2015 12:46

Emotionally moving, Trills?
I was hopefully that was Barry's famed work.

I have a Sainsburys gif at the top of this page, it is someone putting fruit in ice cubes. I remain unmoved. And unsure whether he/she is an ultimate lazy fucker too.

TheIronGnome · 10/01/2015 12:54

Wow op, you're not here to make friends are you?

I've used onions which are soft, and starting to rot... I'm not precious about it. But I don't like to, and I hate feeling like I need to use them up quickly before they pass the point of no return. Not when there's a fantastic alternative.

Do you live on your own?

SukieTuesday · 10/01/2015 12:57

I love frozen onions. Also frozen garlic, coriander and ginger. They're from Waitrose in this house Wink

GokTwo · 10/01/2015 12:57

I love your post! Poor Barry! However, I quite like the adverts and ideas. Unfortunately I shop only at Lidl now.

GreyjoysAnatomy · 10/01/2015 12:58

I mostly use frozen veg, but sone things you can't buy frozen so have to use fresh. It cuts out wastage and is quicker and easier than using fresh veg. I don't see the issue at all Confused

TiggyD · 10/01/2015 13:05

Is it possible to make your own? I cook for one so it would make sense, but I assume it would be cheaper to make your own. I think I might try the same with peppers to. I'm forever wanting just a handful.

Seff · 10/01/2015 13:05

I like frozen spinach, which is surely even lazier than frozen onion as you don't even have to chop spinach. It's just I get more for my money and don't have to use a whole bag to get a tiny amount.

nunkspugget · 10/01/2015 13:09

Aren't frozen veg better because the nutrients are preserved within hours of harvesting, whereas 'fresh' stuff is usually really old by the time we buy it?

simbacatlivesgain · 10/01/2015 13:16

I love frozen onions. And frozen garlic. I am quite a good cook from scratch cook and these are great-like frozen peas , onions are better frozen than fresh imho.

iammargesimpson · 10/01/2015 13:29

Frozen chopped onions are brilliant, I used to make a LOT of chutneys and the time and effort saved by using bags of frozen chopped onions was fantastic. I still use them when making stews, Spag Bol, etc as my eyes get incredibly painful when chopping onions, even strong leeks can make my eyes tear up, for anyone who suffers the same you will know how sore it can be. For those saying it's lazy, surely another way to look at it is 'it's convenient' so what's the problem?

Birdsgottafly · 10/01/2015 13:45

My youngest DD (17) has SN and is very sensitive to some textures and smells, onions being one.

I cook my Vegan meals seperatly, sometimes of a morning and frozen onions are quick, easy and smell free. I find I have to use gloves, if i'm using fresh, otherwise, the smell seems to linger under my nails. I'd have to air out the kitchen etc for my DD.

I buy mine from Farm-foods (or Icekand along with frozen Spinach) and on occassion, I use their frozen mixed peppers, if I've got a really busy week and have to carry two meals a day around with me, because I'm not home until after 10pm. That way I'm only chopping Courgette and Mushrooms.

I always have frozen mushrooms in.

We're not all cooking for families and are in our homes for dinner/tea, or bedtimes with younger children.

You can't label someone "lazy" because of one set of behaviour, or use of an available product.

Birdsgottafly · 10/01/2015 13:46

"Iceland"

squoosh · 10/01/2015 13:48

I don't have strong opinions on frozen opinions one way or the other but that Mediterranean fish stew that bloke makes with his frozen cod and his frozen parsely looks flippin' rank! And that's with the assistance of a food stylist. Urgh.

My taste buds would need to be frozen before I'd eat that.

squoosh · 10/01/2015 13:49

Frozen 'onions' that is. My frozen opinions are often quite non-defrostable.

Fluffyears · 10/01/2015 13:52

I use frozen chopped onion as I freeze leftover onion. You just chuck it in still frozen and it's fab. I don't actually buy the pre -frozen stuff just freeze my own if there is too much for the dish I'm making.

Bakeoffcakes · 10/01/2015 13:56

Who the heck is BarryConfused

Bakeoffcakes · 10/01/2015 13:56

And why had he got frozen onions? It sounds quite painful.

SirChenjin · 10/01/2015 14:01

I saw this for the first time today. That risotto looked bland and dull, but that was probably the frozen onions.

squoosh · 10/01/2015 14:01

This is Barry, he's the new face of Sainsbury's. And what an annoying face it is. I warrant you'd have to travel far and wide to find a more irritating visage.

CMOTDibbler · 10/01/2015 14:02

I also freeze onions if leftover or if we've bought too many (dh always assumes we need onions) and they are handy. I also freeze herbs and garlic - in ice cube trays with oil if feeling enthusiastic, or just chucked in a bag. Ginger root can be grated from frozen, so that lurks too.

I agree that the prawn and spinach rissotto sounds bleurgh though. It would need some serious stock, pepper, garlic and parmesan action to bring it back from blandy mcbland.
