Just found out that I bought it in March and then have been charged for it again in December. I haven,t watched a single movie and have only brought about 3 things off amazon this year. What is going on.? Has this happened to anyone else?

Massive Thankyou to ICan'tDecide. Brilliant tip, have just done that and very relieved to find I don't have Prime.

Was worried because I had found a little plastic card with Amazon Prime Free Trial for ( my name ) on it, which I cut in half and binned. Think it was a promotional thing which came in one of the Christmas deliveries from them. Wasn't clear whether or not I was signed up from the look of the little card though.

jellymaker · 09/01/2015 08:07

thank you Loopylala7. That is what I did. asked for free delivery on an order and ended up paying £79. I am going back armed with this information.

It's hardly being a pedant to point out someone is using completely the wrong word is it?

Bunbaker · 09/01/2015 08:15

Wow. Thanks for this thread. I have just gone into my Amazon account and found that I had Amazon Prime membership. I have just cancelled it.

They are really sneaky.

Mintyy · 09/01/2015 08:19

"Do you think they were shown different webpages, with different words and pictures on?"

Yes, Trills, I think that is exactly what people are saying.

Bunbaker · 09/01/2015 08:27

I am pretty savvy about what I sign up for BTW and didn't realise that I had ticked the Amazon Prime box. This explains why I got a letter recently asking why I hadn't used Amazon Prime.

Kakaka · 09/01/2015 08:30

I did this a few years ago. And they charged me for three years without a single email. They only contacted me when my credit card expired!

My fault for not noticing but I honestly had not had a single communication from them in all that time. I was really cross with myself for not noticing.

They refunded me immediately as I hadn't used it once.

Re those people asking about different web pages, I think that was the case, as I almost got caught out an Amazon Prime promotion using a method I'd not seen before.

Just before Xmas, when I was doing a lot of ordering, the webpage I was shown after pressing buy was very crafty. It offered two options, along the lines of: do you want to continue with this order, with large yes or no boxes in the middle of the screen. There was also a very small box in the bottom right of the screen, effectively saying yes I'd like to continue without the Amazon Prime free trial.

I clicked the Large Yes Box, and as the screen changed, noticed the small yes button in the bottom right of the screen. I did get an Amazon Prime email explaining it all, and cancelled. But if you are ordering a few items, you get lots of emails from Amazon anyway, and it's easy to miss. I only noticed because I'd seen the small button, so went carefully through my Amazon emails.

grocklebox · 09/01/2015 11:32

no matter what way you sign up to it you must tick an acceptance of terms and conditions. If you tick without reading its yro own fault. You all got click happy and need to pay more attention to what you are signing up to.

Bunbaker · 09/01/2015 11:37

I have just received an email from Amazon saying that they will refund my membership Grin

Thank you MN people.

If you sign up for a free trial you can disable the automatic renewal straight away whilst keeping your free trial, it even says that you will be charged 79 at the end of the free trial unless you disable it when you sign up.

Lilymaid · 09/01/2015 12:31

I found I was signed up to a free trial before Christmas. I was making an order and the free p & p I normally choose wasn't available and My order defaulted onto Amazon Prime. Fortunately I immediately cancelled and enjoyed free delivery until the end of December.
I mainly buy Kindle downloads on Amazon so Prime wouldn't be worthwhile but I felt that the tactics used were rather underhand.

Tyzer85 · 09/01/2015 12:32

And Amazon certainly do not sign customers up to Prime without the customers knowledge, if you skip the warning about the 79 fee than it's hardly Amazon's fault.

ImBatDog · 09/01/2015 13:36

i use amazon a lot, and i always accept the months free trial when they offer it, then i immediately go an unsubscribe to the automatic renewal so my free month ends without me being charged.

you really can't sign up for it without knowing you have. Thats not to say they might not have signed you up themselves though, if what one poster said about it happening was true.

wol1968 · 09/01/2015 13:42

I think it's easy for the unwary to get signed up for Amazon Prime thinking they've just gone for a special offer on delivery. I'm not entirely sure it isn't worth complaining to a consumers' organisation about this as Amazon's methods are distinctly sneaky.

LetticeKnollys · 09/01/2015 13:50

Oh phew, my trial runs out tomorrow and I had forgotten until I saw this thread!

SoonToBeMrsB · 09/01/2015 14:27

I'm pissed off at Amazon as I had a six month student Prime trial, which includes the instant streaming too. DP was signed into it on the Xbox, accidentally selected "sign up to Prime" option and luckily he told me and I checked my Amazon account because they signed me up and charged me for it, even though there was no confirmation or options on the screen when he did it! He honestly just hit the button and it did it without asking if he was sure. Arseholes.

What??? We are open right now??? I am sitting here!!! Ring the free phone number, you will have your sub and refund today
Freephone (within the UK) 0800 496 1081.

Anewmeanewname · 09/01/2015 14:34

I'm another one that agreed to the trial at Christmas and would have been charged today if I hadn't seen this thread last night, so thanks op!

The Christmas orders took ages to arrive anyway, certainly not the next day delivery promised.

SoupDragon · 09/01/2015 15:27

I clicked the "free one day delivery" once at Christmas and saw that it was going to sign me up to Prime for £79 despite not being the most observant of people.

SoupDragon · 09/01/2015 15:28

you will have your sub and refund today

Which is, in fact, tomorrow as the OP posted yesterday evening :)

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 09/01/2015 15:39

Tbf I ddnt see the time stamp.. but open till 12! So that was bull poopey from the agent!

jellymaker · 09/01/2015 18:28

Just a quick update. I contacted them today and they refunded me. They could see I hadn't used it. She explained that when I had ordered something in March, I had clicked on it then. I do think this is an easy mistake to make as I would never have signed up to £79. Not in a million years. I'm thinking about forwarding this to a consumer group as there has been that many replies on here saying it has happened to them. I consider myself to be reasonably savvy. How many people are getting taken in by this. It's scandalous in my view. Any ideas for consumer groups?
