I can find lots of vitriolic threads about Katie Hopkins, fair enough, it's great that people feel that they can criticize her without having to fear for their lives and that is the beauty of free speech.

However, I am quite surprised that on a message board that is all about discussing people/ideas/politics, sometimes aggressively and negatively, there doesn't seem to be any new threads about the grotesque attack in Paris yesterday, which was not only the murder of 12 innocent people but also an attack on free speech and an attack on creativity. This is important to anyone who values and believes in free speech as every murder and threat chips away at these fundamental Western (and human) values and rights. RIP to the cartoonists that were mercilessly killed for doing their jobs. Lets hope we are not saying RIP to freedom of expression.

Not to mention some people are being very aggressive about the whole subject and any attempt to discuss it results in a flaming.

I didn't do nuffin. Also, just because people aren't posting doesn't mean they don't care. Katie Hopkins is EASY to despise, and to talk about. Religious terrorism is a slightly different kettle of fish.

I've seen threads I'm sure.

But anything negative to do with islam is like voldormort on here so I'm not surprised really if there's not much.

There are enough threads. Some easier to read than others.

And it wasn't 12 cartoonists. Only some of them were.

There's nothing AIBU worthy to debate re; the Charlie Hebdo murders IMO.

Nobody's going to think it wasn't upsetting or that it was justified or that we should now ban all the brown people.

Start a Chat thread if you want to express your sadness.

How IMPORTANT something is does not always directly relate to how much you might choose to DISCUSS it.

Tbh theres nothing that can be debated re the murders. Thoughts with those involved. Is katie hopkins a reality show star like xfactor?

All the debates i have seen have been about whether all Muslims are obliged to speak out against this, whether Islam is inherently evil or whether people have been sufficiently woeful about the incident on the boards. And all have been quite ugly.

Well, Katie's views are a matter of opinion. Some people agree, some don't.

This barbaric act of terrorism does not exactly divide opinion, does it?

Hopkins divides opinion. I am constantly surprised when people post they agree with her or agree that she's just saying what people think. But they're welcome to their vulgarity.
People being callously shot for someone's delusion about murder being justifiable doesn't tend to divide opinion.
What to do about it does. But then I'm sure some are simply waiting for their Katie mouthpiece as apparently they can't speak for themselves

I agree with previous posters. There's nothing to debate (not about rights and wrongs, anyway) regarding the Charlie Hebdo attack. And the degree to which people like to post emotional and dare I say it, faintly self-aggrandising expressions of sympathy and resolve (like your OP) varies widely from individual to individual. I don't do it.

They're all too busy frothing and ranting and raving about 'the rapist Ched Evans' aren't they? And it's the same people on every thread repeating the same things. They need to get lives.

I see Je suis Charlie to my right....my FB is full of the Paris atrocity. Couldn't give a stuff about Katie. Not sure why I clicked on this thread.

The CH story broke in the last few days, Katie Hopkins has been busily trolling and making a tit of herself for the best part of a decade. Ergo there will be more Katie Hopkins threads on these boards.

I think it is sad that people have murdered, have lost their lives, and others suffer from witnessing it and losing loved ones and friends.

I think it is sad that such a xenophobic hateful paper that wants to incite violence is now being treated as a beacon of freedom of speech and that people would want to identify with that paper and those that murdered are being erased underneath that.

I think it is sad that the mainstream media will talk about the Paris atrocity as as the atrocity that it is - will use the word terrorism, will all it an act of violence and hate - but the Jewish businesses, schools, synagogues and homes that have been attacked in France over the last weeks won't be identified with those terms, the mosques that have been attacked today and have been for weeks in Sweden won't get those terms, that the mainstream US networks have ignored that an NAACP - the oldest civil rights organization in the US - had someone blow a bomb up in front of a branch yesterday - a branch that had called for action on the Darren Wilson - and those words to condemn it were not used (neither will the fact the multiple KKK groups threatened to do just that be mentioned or condemned in the media), that the US called the Paris atrocity the 'worst terrorism Europe has seen since 2005' ignoring Brevik, ignoring fascist attacks against Roma communities, pretty much ignoring everything because they won't call them terrorism or acts of hate unless Muslim people are perpetrators (and will ignore the Muslim victim).

I think it is sad that #killallmuslims was trending last night, that Muslim citizens in Europe and the US are living in fear and thankful to those who are arranging rides and solidarity walks to protect them and keep them safe.

I think there is a lot sad in this situation. What people are choosing to discuss on Mumsnet in a snapshot of their free time on one social media site, not so much.
