AIBU to expect visitors to bring a decent bottle of wine with them.

We have had lots of friends and relatives over to stay and for dinner over Christmas. It is lovely to see them all but why do they always bring a totally crap bottle of New World wine with them?
I have in my kitchen 10 bottles of vile red and white wine. Should I pour it all down the sink, use it for cooking or give it back to them next time I visit? Any other options would be considered!

I only take a lovely bottle of wine when I know the food will be up to par. Everyone else gets a bottle from the under a fiver shelf in Morrisons.

I know nothing about wine and can't stand the stuff, so I up cycle those I get as gifts when I need to take wine anywhere, I don't have a clue what I'm giving but I see it as just being polite to offer really.

Give them to teachers at the end of term, then the teachers will take them to dinner parties when invited, and the host will give them to their DCs teachers and so on and so on........:

Depends what the wine is, and if it is just a matter of taste. Is it cheap and horrible, and they prefer to drink what you have, or just not to your taste? Personally, I love a Marlborough, took a lovely bottle to a dinner party to have it instantly whisked off me and had to drink a horrible cheap Chardonnay all night, thumping headache the next day too! Worst thing was, tgey told me they opened my wine the next night and hated it so left it by the hob for cooking! Grrr!

There are plenty of wonderful New World wines. What was the problem with the ones you were given? French wines are not necessarily better.

I like my visitors to bring themselves and have a good time. What they may or may not bring with them is irrelevant. I think YABU and pretty snobbish into the bargain.

I wouldn't know what wine was supposed to be good and what wasn't.

Why not serve the wine they bring? They obviously like it.

That was my instinct too Athyrium, but I wasn't sure whether the OP was being a wine snob or tongue in cheek. It'll be drinkable as these days you are hard pushed to get a rotten wine - especially from the New World.

At least they brought something with them, my lot don't!

Next time open it for them to drink. Surreptitiously fill up your own glass with decent wine whilst doing the cooking!

Wow! That's one hell of a sweeping statement - there's some bloody lovely New World wine.

So YANBU to hope that people will bring nice wine but YABVVVU to dismiss the whole of the new world.

You are being unreasonable. You shouldn't expect anything from friends (relatives maybe feel they have to come and dig around for the crap bottle they were given). Wink

Guess it depends on if they are wine drinkers or not. I don't drink wine (all tastes grim to me) so I always struggle to know what to take unless I know a wine someone specifically likes.

Must admit everyone knows I'm not a wine drinker yet it is the gift of choice when people come to ours for dinner which does annoy me, why bring me something you know I hate?! The in-laws always get me a £15 voucher for my birthday plus a £10 bottle of wine, would rather have a £25 voucher tbh (anyhoo I digress)

Are you sure they are crap? Of what relevance is the fact they are New World? Plenty of crap European wines...
I think you may BU and also snobbish. And also possibly a bit ignorant. Hard to tell without more info than 'New World' about the wine.

I don't drink much so I'm totally clueless about what constitutes a good bottle of wine, can you give me some pointers on what would be an acceptable gift bottle if we were invited to dinner?

There is nothing nicer than a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. That's the sum total of what I know about wine - so definitely keep those bottles.
