We have had lots of friends and relatives over to stay and for dinner over Christmas. It is lovely to see them all but why do they always bring a totally crap bottle of New World wine with them?
I have in my kitchen 10 bottles of vile red and white wine. Should I pour it all down the sink, use it for cooking or give it back to them next time I visit? Any other options would be considered!

NZ sauvignon blanc are usually very very good.

SauvignonBlanche · 04/01/2015 21:02

What's the name of the Sauvignon Blanc?

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 04/01/2015 21:02

NZ Savignon Blanc is a very good wine. You aren't just being a snob, you're being a snob who doesn't know her wine.

Only1scoop · 04/01/2015 21:03

Erm yes this is a very funny wind up....

Stealthpolarbear · 04/01/2015 21:03

I bet your hand soap is from a little boutique in Central London too. Nothing you could get from a normal shop.

KoalaDownUnder · 04/01/2015 21:03

Not sure you're a wine snob so much, tbh. You sound more as if you don't know much about wine, and/or expect everyone to have the same taste as you. Hmm

Monmouth · 04/01/2015 21:03

Just seen update, NZ Sauvignon Blanc is not crap.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 04/01/2015 21:05

I wouldn't have the foggiest what constitues a 'good' bottle of wine to take to a dinner party. I've only ever been invited to parties where 'bring a bottle' means vodka, rum, sambuca or something similar Blush

OxonConfusedDotCom · 04/01/2015 21:06

Yadnbu- non "naice" wine is vile esp as most of the bottle price will have gone on tax/Vat. So, for example if this is approx £2.50, £2.99 bottle gets you 49p worth of wine whereas £9.99 obv gets you £7.50 worth. Ballpark figures obv but you broadly get what you pay for. Would rather drink water than crap wine, personally. Nothing to do with snob value, just taste pure and simple.

JassyRadlett · 04/01/2015 21:06

Well, you're missing out on a fuckload of excellent wines with that attitude, much better than the shit that the average midmarket European vineyards churn out.

But embrace that ignorance, more for the rest of us who care about the taste. Wink

ENormaSnob · 04/01/2015 21:07

I like whatevers half price in tesco

Fabulous46 · 04/01/2015 21:07

Which wine would you suggest to compliment mushy peas and chips to go? I'd be interested to know.

thoth · 04/01/2015 21:07

Grin Other than Argentinian Malbec, I only drink Old World wines too.

My MIL is extraordinarily generous and kind, but she unfailingly chooses vile wine! It's her only fault, but I dread it when she says she'll bring wine. Thankfully, most of our friends/visitors have exquisite taste [hic]

BaffledSomeMore · 04/01/2015 21:07

Some varieties of Lindeman's are absolutely splendid.
Have you actually tried any of them?

lomega · 04/01/2015 21:08

YABU! to a lot of people wine is wine, they don't know the difference between plonk and the good stuff. plus there are some really yummy new world wines around - the south african cabernet sauvignons are pretty drinkable.

I'm a bit of a wine snob myself so I do know the difference between what I like and what I don't, but if a guest had thought to bring me a bottle of anything you bet your arse I'd be grateful!!

unless, of course, it was Lambrini - which is perry incidentally and not wine - as that stuff can't even be used for cooking with, it's got the weirdest fucking aftertaste (antifreeze perhaps?) I've ever tasted!!

newyearsresolutionsnotforme · 04/01/2015 21:08

Use it for cooking or re-gift. At least the brought something. Have you tried letting the red wine breath? Put it opened in glasses for half an hour before and then try it.

OxonConfusedDotCom · 04/01/2015 21:09

Depends on the NZ sauvignon blanc... Like a couple of painful people i know who think they seem to be wine experts for saying "i never drink Chardonnay". Which is as ignorant and sweeping as saying i never eat chocolate.

lomega · 04/01/2015 21:10

Also WTAF at NZ Sauvingnon being a crap wine?! That's my favourite, send it to me. You know that's normally about £8-12 a bottle right?!!!

Thereshallbeaspirin · 04/01/2015 21:10

I will laugh if the 'crap NZ' turns out to be cloudy bay...

Worst wine visit experience I had was going to a relative for Xmas day, armed with a two bottles of 82 pomerol. Hostess put it to one side and poured me a glass of chateauxneuf du pape. Then opened a second bottle of the same. my father and I slugged it back like there was no tomorrow in order to get them to open the decent stuff. Which we were then too pissed to enjoy of course.

Well that's quite a narrow view of wine. Some new world is excellent (tonight I drunk a Ben Glaetzer 2006 wine called Annaperenna which far exceeds some of the best French I have ever tasted). However I think you should give your fiendss credit. They have probably been taken I by supermarket promotions and think they are buying you a nice bottle that is half price so getting you better IYSWIM..
I would also not presume to take wine to a friends for consumption that night. I would expect the host yo have organised wine that matches the food, unless it was clear it was a free for all type evening.

missorinoco · 04/01/2015 21:13

Is this for real?
Firstly, that you are complaining about the quality of wine brought, and secondly the sweeping statement about all new world wines. (As another wine snob, wine society, prefer decent wines, blah blah blah.)

I couldn't give a hoot what wine my guests bring. If it is a nice one, and I know they are into wine, I would hunt out one I thought they would like when i visited them, but otherwise, thankyou for the gift.

(Although if I thought someone ranked me on the wine I brought I would go bottom label out of badness....)

Nancy66 · 04/01/2015 21:14

Many of the new world wines are far superior to their European counterparts.

it sounds like you don't actually know that much about wine at all.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 04/01/2015 21:14

No this isn't a wind up and yes, we do generally drink wine that we have in the house already! The NZ SB is Villa Maria. Will sign off now and finish my large glass of self bought Italian red.

You do sound a wee bit snobby & possibly ill informed.

I'm currently enjoying a glass of Cloudy Bay. A most generous friend bought us a case & we were very grateful.
