We have had lots of friends and relatives over to stay and for dinner over Christmas. It is lovely to see them all but why do they always bring a totally crap bottle of New World wine with them?
I have in my kitchen 10 bottles of vile red and white wine. Should I pour it all down the sink, use it for cooking or give it back to them next time I visit? Any other options would be considered!

What's wrong with new world wine? I took 2 bottles of Prosecco to my parents house for NYE, am I getting slated for that? Should I have upped my game and taken Champagne? You do sound awfully snobby, as someone else said, if you really can't bear to drink it then re-gift it or cook with it.

isitsnowingyet · 04/01/2015 20:50

YABU - and yes - you are a snob. Personally I don't like French wine (unless it's drunk in France) - but I wouldn't say it was 'totally crap' if I was bought some.

ChocolateTeacup · 04/01/2015 20:50

In order to judge we need to know the wines!

usualsuspect333 · 04/01/2015 20:51

I'd bring a bottle of Lambrini just to see your face.

TerrifiedMothertobe · 04/01/2015 20:52

Most new world wine is excellent.

Unless they have brought really nasty cheap plonk, I think you are being quite unkind and pretty ungrateful.

WhataMistakeaToMakea · 04/01/2015 20:52

Yab a bit u. I don't like wine and wouldn't have a clue what a 'good wine' is.

If the invite was a bring a bottle, I would look for something worth around £10 but reduced as much as possible (that's a lot of money to me so wouldn't waste a whole tenner on a bottle of wine!)- but I wouldn't have a clue what I was buying. If not specifically asked to though I would just take flowers or chocs for after dinner.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 04/01/2015 20:53

We are talking various cheap bottles of Chardonnay, Lindeman's Shiraz which would take the enamel off your teeth and a grotty New Zealand White. No Blue Nun though! I am a bit worried that they might think my cooking is not up to scratch now.
Yep think I must be a wine snob as I only like French, Italian and Spanish!

YABU. And a bit snobbish and ungrateful.

IAmAPaleontologist · 04/01/2015 20:55

dh is something of a wine snob and buys all his from the wine society. Any bottles that get brought over by friends are handed to the school bottle stall.

iklboo · 04/01/2015 20:56

As my dear dad says - £5 or £50, it'll still be piss in the morning.

OOAOML · 04/01/2015 20:57

Why not serve them the chardonnay, and use the rest for cooking/donate to next school tombola? If they like the wine they will be happy, if they don't and are offloading it on you and snaffling your wine, maybe they will bring different wine next time.

MarjorieMelon · 04/01/2015 20:57

Wairu Cove from New Zealand is in favour with me at the moment so please pass it across to me if that is the NZ wine that you refer to.

You are being snobby. Your guests probably like the wine they gave you. I would only give someone a wine that I would drink.

youmakemydreams · 04/01/2015 20:57

Wow even the biggest wine snob I know can appreciate that there are some fantastic new world wines out there. In fact I think it shows a certain lack of knowledge to be so scathing of new world wines. There are some horrible French and Italian wines out there. Aspirational I think is more the word rather than any actual knowledgeable snobbery.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 04/01/2015 20:57

Just looked and the grotty White is a NZ Sauvignon Blanc. Sorry hassled but I think I might use it for cooking chicken in tomorrow.

MarjorieMelon · 04/01/2015 20:59

Which one Mushy?

usualsuspect333 · 04/01/2015 20:59

I think wannabe wine snobs are the worst kind.

lemisscared · 04/01/2015 20:59

wow! are people really so far up their own arses?? a stealth boast about only liking naice wine Hmm

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 04/01/2015 20:59

Like the idea of giving the bottles to the school fete but it would be just my luck to win it back again.

Annietheacrobat · 04/01/2015 20:59

No don't waste the NZ Sauvignon blanc! I'll swap it for some French crap that we have in our cupboard

HappyAgainOneDay · 04/01/2015 21:00

I went to some friends the other day and took a bottle of £2.99 wine from Aldi plus some other gifts.

BathshebaDarkstone · 04/01/2015 21:00

YANBU. We have a bunch of friends over about twice a year and either they bring nothing or bring one bottle and drink two, so now we're saying we'll go to the pub instead. Hmm

Only1scoop · 04/01/2015 21:01

Is this a wind up....do you cook with Cloudy bay and drink Spanish plonk? Grin

LetticeKnollys · 04/01/2015 21:01

Hold an online Mumsnet raffle and post them to the winners.

Monmouth · 04/01/2015 21:01

You drink what you bring, did you put it all away and give them your own 'decent' stuff?

It's happened to me the other way round, have taken some decent wine and never seen it for the rest of the night.
