To pay £39 delivery charge..... from IKEA

Need some bits from IKEA. A few chest of drawers (already have the same range and very happy with them) but we're not able to get to an IKEA in the foreseeable.

We don't have a car and although we could ask someone (my dad or bil) to take us - we'd offer to pay / at least give petrol money - then we'd need someone to have DS. So it starts verging on hassle territory.

I'm also 38w pregnant so need to get the stuff soon and need OH with me. He could go alone I guess but again its waiting for someone to be able to give him a lift etc

Taxi would be similar cost to delivery.

However I just feel so angry that that they charge that much for delivery. We're spending over £400?

Shall I just suck up the delivery charge?

We bought a sofa that was ready made and available in the shop (but in their external warehouse round the corner).

We picked up a price card, paid in the shop and got a receipt to take the warehouse. DP insisted that the sofa would fit in our estate car and there was no need to pay for delivery. I knew that it wouldn't but he didn't agree.

After a few minutes wrestling the sofa, including roping in a passer by because I couldn't really help lift the sofa as it was very heavy, he conceded that I was right all along and we paid 25 for delivery (we live very close but this was the minimum price).

Even with the delivery price it was cheap for what it was. I would look at the total price when comparing with other shops. If ikea is 400 plus 50 delivery, it is still cheaper than something similar from elsewhere that is 500 including free delivery for example.

It was delivered the next day. They initially gave us an afternoon slot and said it would be delivered between 1 and 9 pm or something, but said they would call about an hour in advance with a more precise time. They actually called at about 10 am and delivered at about 11 am.

It is possible that ikea contracts out it's delivery so different shops might work in different ways if they use different providers.

I eat £39 worth of meatballs and hotdogs when I go so I think it's reasonable to pay the delivery charge instead.

Haven't RTFT so apologies if you've already ordered but did you think of asking if any of your neighbours wanted to order IKEA stuff for themselves and split the delivery charge? Would all need to be on one order but could work out cheaper.

excuse me for being a zombie this simply popped out on google..
we are about to have our first child and new furnishing is simply a must... ikea furniture is really awesome but their delivery services do not seem to be the best option out there. any other suggestions? read stories about "lost" furniture, awlful deliveyr delays and s.f. we have quite a few units on our wish list, thank you!

19lottie82 · 09/11/2015 15:23

£39? would you rather hire a van, (prob more than £39) drive to IKEA, spend a couple of hours in store, finding all the pieces in the warehouse, stuff them all in the van, drive home, unload it all, then return the van? Thought not.

Or perhaps you'd like them to deliver it for free, despite having to pay staff and the running costs of the van?

Honestly £39 for furniture delivery is NOT expensive.

19lottie82 · 09/11/2015 15:24

Oops didn't realise this was a zombie!

Paulin I've never had any problems with an IKEA delivery or known anyone who has.

HackerFucker22 · 09/11/2015 16:15

I did a big order recently.

All was fine apart from a few smaller items came later and half a chest of drawers was missing.... so they resent the whole lot and we ended up with one and a half chest of drawers.

ilovehotsauce · 09/11/2015 16:21

I've paid the delivery charge a few times it is infuriating last time we spend £2k+ but its not worth stressing about in your situation.

Even if you do go with someone by the time you've given some petrol money and bought lunch that's £40 right there! I love IKEA but even I feel to pregnant to waddle round all day and I'm only 34 weeks!

ilovehotsauce · 09/11/2015 16:22

Oops

PaulinLabelle · 09/11/2015 16:25

are you sure? I know that there're quite a few independent delivery companies that specialize and will guarantee a 100% accurate delivery + insurance or at least that's what my colleagues mentioned. I'm not that familiar with flat pack deliveries, that's why I had to ask

PaulinLabelle · 10/11/2015 16:06

wanted furnishing asap, so I tried a same day delivery & assembly service, the first half was delivered today, will post all assembled furniture when fully built and ready. ps: something I was not familiar with but I find to be of immense importance for pregnant and mums: www.anchorit.gov ! comes free of charge and it's priceless

£39 is cheaper than petrol plus all those little extras you pick up when tempted in store not to mention the grief of trying to shove everything into the car when you've bought too much.

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 11/11/2015 16:58

I paid it years ago when I lived in an upper floor flat without a lift and was 50 miles away from ikea. Bargain considering I had a whole flats worth of furniture to have delivered Grin

Mistigri · 11/11/2015 18:37

The IKEA delivery charge isn't really for "delivery" - if you think about their business model, normally it's the customer who spends an hour or more in the warehouse picking out all the items they need - if you order online and get it delivered an IKEA employee has to do that.

Last couple of times we've been it's taken DH and me at least 2 hours to get all our stuff (our local ikea has two separate warehouses a 5 min drive apart which makes it even more timeconsuming). Our time is worth way more than £20 per person per hour so I'd consider £39 a bargain. Unfortunately our nearest IKEA doesn't deliver to our address or I would use the delivery service every time!

PaulinLabelle · 07/12/2015 12:12

is the rate still the same, thank you

PaulinLabelle · 07/12/2015 12:22

had an argument with my BF, excuse us please.
I got it at Ikea's website: "Our truck delivery charges start from £35 and are based on postcode" www.ikea.com/ms/en_GB/service-offer/delivery/

BarbaraofSeville · 07/12/2015 13:01

Ikea contract our their delivery so charges may vary between stores.

I live less than 2 miles and have just paid about £45 to have a kitchen delivered, which I was quite happy with and just considered it part of the price of the kitchen. We could have collected it ourselves but would have had to hire a van and shift dozens of heavy boxes in and out of it.

When I was shopping around for kitchens, I noticed that diy-kitchens, I think, charged £75 for delivery if one person did the delivery and said you had to help the deliverer unload the boxes and put it in your house or £150 for a 2 person delivery where they would both carry it in for you.

Ikea make you do some of the work yourself (picking, delivering, assembly) or expect you to fully pay the cost of them doing it for you. I don't mind because we almost always collect things ourselves unless very large.

Shops offering 'free' delivery will only build the price of delivery into the item and/or cut corners with the delivery service. Remember that we're all quick to moan when we receive shit service from the likes of Yodel, which is what we get when we pretend that delivery is 'free'.

LookingOldBeforMyTime · 07/10/2016 18:24

Do get a grip Mammanat222.

If you think £39 is expensive for the service you are getting then you are living in cloud cuckoo land IMO. Try setting up a business to undercut them and see how you get on.

ThornyBird · 07/10/2016 18:48

We live approx 3 hours from the nearest IKEA, so a 6hour round trip (assuming they A30/A39/M5 aren't shut). £39 seems likes excellent value to me Wink

ThornyBird · 07/10/2016 18:55

Ah stupid didn't RTFT. Angry

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 07/10/2016 19:10

are you a VERY slow typist Lookingold ??

DontTouchTheMoustache · 07/10/2016 19:13

I spent 30 minutes in the car park this weekend looking for a space and basically having a nervous breakdown. Pay the charge, nothing is worth that!!

lampygirl · 07/10/2016 19:23

Deliveries in anything bigger than a transit will also have a load of admin behind them due to drivers hours regulations for professional drivers. Knowing the ins and outs of running bigger vehicles means £39 is very much a bargain for what is probably more than an hour's work for 2 people, plus fuel and running costs.

allegretto · 07/10/2016 19:34

I think it's reasonable when you consider that most furniture requires at least two people to deliver it.
