To pay £39 delivery charge..... from IKEA

Need some bits from IKEA. A few chest of drawers (already have the same range and very happy with them) but we're not able to get to an IKEA in the foreseeable.

We don't have a car and although we could ask someone (my dad or bil) to take us - we'd offer to pay / at least give petrol money - then we'd need someone to have DS. So it starts verging on hassle territory.

I'm also 38w pregnant so need to get the stuff soon and need OH with me. He could go alone I guess but again its waiting for someone to be able to give him a lift etc

Taxi would be similar cost to delivery.

However I just feel so angry that that they charge that much for delivery. We're spending over £400?

Shall I just suck up the delivery charge?

Yours is the only comment that doesn't seem like your're an IKEA shareholder. £39 IS absolutely ridiculous considering many other places charge far less for the same price and quality furniture!

Here in Dublin the delivery charge is related to the cost of the item so the more expensive the item the more it costs to deliver.

I have paid it before. Warning they only deliver to one room. I have to say through I had shelves and mattress for upstairs, sofa for downstairs..However men were really helpful when I suggested everything is delivered upstairs and they don't bother to take sofa upstairs...

It was worth it for the ease of getting furniture upstairs.

I've paid it when I bought a bed, mattress and some storage units to be honest

I've paid it a few times even though we're fairly close to IKEA. It's impossible to go there without buying £50 worth of extra shit so I'm actually saving money to pay them to bring it to me.

Funny this thread popped up today.
I have been thinking about getting some wardrobes & have had a long discussion with DH about how to get them home. They won't fit in the car. We could probably hire a van for an hour or two, but then we have to do the picking, loading, unloading etc.

(Totally outing myself with this!) £35 delivery sounds extortionate for a journey of less than a mile.

Seriously, its the cheapest/easiest way for us.

What I can't get over are the number of people on Ebay selling things like curtains etc, brand new still in packaging, at least 50% over the IKEA price. Even ordering from IKEA and paying them to deliver has to be cheaper?

Interesting that I was just complaining about this today. £140 worth of items, £35 delivery fee. However, as a friend reminded me, that's just the way it is. I don't have to buy from them. But as I want those specific items from IKEA, I'll likely stump up the delivery fee and deal with it. Thankfully I don't order from them that often.

The OP posted this in January 2015. I'd hope she has made a decision and found peace with it by now.

A friend of mine lives a log way from nearest IKEA do delivery her only option. She does a shout out on Facebook each time and clubs together with a few people at a time and splits the cost. Might help xxx

If we had no car and no access to one (without hiring one) I'd pay, it still works out cheaper that buying furniture locally.
We are planning another trip for chests of drawers to match ones we already have. Ikea is 1.5 hours away, if we make a big enough list we'll pay delivery, and order online, as our car can't hold that much.

You may be able to buy it on Amazon, they sell some IKEA ranges.

£39 for more than one piece of furniture isn't expensive - it's more expensive than a lot of other places but it's not ott. Just pay it or send OH on his own or with a pal.

Have a look on EBay - there are usually people selling IKEA stuff brand new and without the charge, weirdly.

sorry but no private business gives away free delivery really. It is in the cost of something somewhere.

IKEA is pretty transparent about its costs and model. £39 is nothing. I pay the price because you're not just paying for delivery but also for someone to pick it too.

YANBU.

I hate paying delivery charges, particularly when you are spending a lot of money.

We've just bought new sofas and DFS charge for delivery, when we were spending £2000.

I feel your pain, but sometimes you ha be to suck it up for convenience.

You do save by not buying the £5 worth of candles that mysteriously appear in every trolley when you get to the checkout

I think it's reasonable when you consider that most furniture requires at least two people to deliver it.

Deliveries in anything bigger than a transit will also have a load of admin behind them due to drivers hours regulations for professional drivers. Knowing the ins and outs of running bigger vehicles means £39 is very much a bargain for what is probably more than an hour's work for 2 people, plus fuel and running costs.

I spent 30 minutes in the car park this weekend looking for a space and basically having a nervous breakdown. Pay the charge, nothing is worth that!!
