To wonder why so many people keep litter trays in the kitchen?

Another thread got me thinking...I see it all the time. Cat's litter trays in the kitchen!

Where you keep and cook food. And sometimes where you eat.

My cat's is in the bathroom where toiletting happens.

AIBU to think this is the only place for a litter tray?

Mines at the front door but my mum kept hers in the utility so not quite the kitchen

When ours were kittens, we kept the litter tray in the kitchen by the back door.

It makes it easier to then get them to go outside when they're ready.

I don't think I could find a hot, soapy bubble bath quite as relaxing if I had a litter tray in my eye line

I can't understand why anyone would allow a box of urine and faeces anywhere in their house.

YANBU a friend of mine is obsessively houseproud n will practically follow you round the house with a duster . . But has trays full of shit in the kitchen n shuts her cats in there at night so they climb all over the surfaces

Because the kitchen generally has easy to clean floors.

I am grossed out enough that my cat's food and water dishes are in the kitchen. Couldn't imagine having the litter tray in there as well!

Madame I don't want my cat shitting on people's flowers! A responsible cat owner should have a tray.

we have six trays ...three cats.
... both ends of middle landing, bathroom, two corners of dining room, sitting room and one in the kitchen behind the bin under some shelves.

Reuben used to like to pee in corners when he was a kitten, so we sort of filled all the corners and they all get used occasionally.
mostly it's the landing and bathroom ones that are favoured.

the last use of the sitting room one was our latest puppy. We were just at a loss as to what to say to her!! :o

ideally i would just have a bathroom one and one in the utility room/porch but it is a funny shape and there is nowhere for one to go out there. And as I said, Reuben idiot cat likes to pee in corners.

Fine to have a litter tray to stop cats crapping in the flower bed, but surely you keep it outside? Why would anyone keep it in the house, let alone in the kitchen?

no wonder I order so much fecking litter.

My cats have free use of the cat flap so there's no need for litter trays in the house at all.

If a cat was unwell or if we had a young kitten I'd relent & have a tray, but it certainly wouldn't be in the kitchen.

If you left a cat litter tray outside you'd have everyone else's cats having a go in it

My cat only had a tray when he was a kitten, but it was in the kitchen simply because there was nowhere else to put it! I didn't like it there (which is why we got rid of it as soon as we could) but there was literally no other space. Even if there was a place in the bathroom, people tend to shut bathroom doors don't they? Surely the cat wouldn't have enough access to the tray in there. Our bathroom door is always slightly open when not in use as it's the only way we can tell if anyone is in there (no locks as autistic ds locks himself in) but I've noticed visitors tend to leave it closed when they've finished so that is obviously the norm.

My cat doesn't get on the worktops btw so at least I didn't have that to worry about.

I hate my cat even being in the kitchen, hate cats on work surfaces so I don't understand why someone would have a litter tray in there. I gave a cat and 2 dogs, none are allowed in my kitchen , luckily my cat poops outside.

Mine is in the bathroom as they are indoor only cats.

They stink when they poo and I hate it, but thankfully with the widow thrown open the smell quickly goes away.

In the summer and during dry weather you can, but you can't in the rain. And without a cat flap you would still need to have the litter tray inside at night. You have never had a cat have you?

I kept the litter tray in the kitchen in one house we had because there was nowhere else suitable to put it. I shut the cats in the kitchen at night because we didn't want them wandering around the house.

I always washed the kitchen surfaces down with antibac spray before preparing food.

Litter tray in the hall by the front door in previous houses. In this house the downstairs loo is large enough to hold a bloody party in. i mean, why? to have it in there.

My mum used to do the 'tray in the kitchen and shut the cat in there all night' thing. She said she used to disinfect the work tops every morning, but i don't think she did. Blergh. I've talked her into moving the tray.

I should have said it is in my downstairs toilet, not in my bathroom.

Bathroom best place for a litter tray, sadly no space for one in our current bathroom. In our old flat me and the cat used to go to the loo together . On a practical note you can scoop the poop straight into the loo.

My cats will poop outside but I prefer them to use the tray for two reasons:

1. they don't poo in someone else's garden.

2. I don't want poo in my own garden either

Some people like me, don't agree with letting cats outside to crap where they want or to become road kill.

Ours is in the bathroom. We have indoor cats so no option for them to go outdoors, plus I think it's irresponsible to have pets and force them to shit in other people's gardens because they can't go at home. If you want pets, give them somewhere to shit!
