To wonder why so many people keep litter trays in the kitchen?

Another thread got me thinking...I see it all the time. Cat's litter trays in the kitchen!

Where you keep and cook food. And sometimes where you eat.

My cat's is in the bathroom where toiletting happens.

AIBU to think this is the only place for a litter tray?

YABU to say only a bathroom. We had downstairs cats (due to weeing issues, ironically) and the only loo was upstairs.

Don't you also get grossed out by brushing your teeth in the same space as you and your cats poo?

HotLipsHoulihan · 03/01/2015 21:06

No idea OP and it's disgusting. We have a conservatory and the litter tray is tucked away in a corner and checked on a very very regular basis .

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/01/2015 21:07

Personally I think keeping cats indoors is cruel but I too am baffled by keeping litter trays in the kitchen.

katrina81 · 03/01/2015 21:07

Mine is in the utility room so we can see it from the kitchen but not actually in the kitchen.

Bunbaker · 03/01/2015 21:09

"Personally I think keeping cats indoors is cruel"

Even in winter? Our cats came inside when it was cold and stayed outside when it wasn't.

HotLipsHoulihan · 03/01/2015 21:13

I only have one as cat is a kitten right now

Writerwannabe83 · 03/01/2015 21:13

My cats have a cat flap so can come and go as they please but they never seem to leave the house. But why would they want to when it's bloody freezing outside??

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/01/2015 21:14

I don't mean letting them inside, I mean having them inside and not letting them out, ever.

Enjorasdream · 03/01/2015 21:16

I would dearly love a cat, must this is the reason I won't get one. You wouldn't leave a toddlers potty full of wee and poo hanging around.

GlitterBelle · 03/01/2015 21:16

Lack of choice?

For me there is no where in the bathroom, it's not big enough. No hallways, wouldn't want it in the bedroom or living room. So it has to be in the kitchen. They are cleaned as soon as they're used, and they're not kept on the counters, so don't see the problem in the slightest.

t3rr3gl35 · 03/01/2015 21:17

This was non negotiable when we were acquired by t3kitty who was taught to use the toilet. No mess, no smells, no germs. Only downside is reminding guests to leave the toilet door open and the lid up for the cat to use the loo, although that is generally met with a lot of disbelief followed by the inevitable "Meet the Fockers" jokes.

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/01/2015 21:18

t3rr

My mums cat uses the toilet! She wasn't trained to, just...did. Funny creature all round, that one.

dementedma · 03/01/2015 21:19

Have always had cats. Never had litter trays other than when they were kittens and even then just for a few weeks. They go out to shit, no arguments, whatever the weather.

DefiniteMaybe · 03/01/2015 21:20

I wish my daft cat would stop being an indoor cat but unfortunately the outside world is if no interest to her.
Litter tray is in the bathroom which is next to the kitchen. She knows better than to go on the worktops, cats can be taught things like that fairly easily.

bambinibop · 03/01/2015 21:20

Ours is in the kitchen. Nowhere else for it really bathroom is too small, utility room is kept shut all the time because it's very drafty, we don't have a conservatory...Ideally I'd rather it wasn't in the kitchen but our kitchen is quite large and it's tucked neatly into a corner .

We do have a covered litter tray so you can't see the litter in it. Our cat hardly ever uses it anyway.

It's not like I chop be vegetables on top of the litter tray anyway. ..I keep my kitchen counters and floors clean.

We don't have room in our bathroom for the litter tray or in the kitchen so it is in the living room/dining room which is the only other room we can fit it in. I know. Minging.

Our cat stays in at night and during the day when we are out so she needs somewhere to go to the toilet in the house. She also refuses to go outside because she is a princess fussy. She does go outside but always returns to poo.

Mammanat222 · 03/01/2015 21:24

Ours is an enclosed tray. Its been in the bathroom of all the places we've lived in (same cat but we've replaced the tray a few times) she is a litter tray trained cat despite being allowed out.

My mum has her cats tray in kitchen as the house is a weird layout and bathroom is several floors from where cat mainly 'lives'. It's a massive kitchen and again an enclosed tray.

HowsTheSerenity · 03/01/2015 21:24

Our litter tray is in the laundry. It's the only place it fits. Ours are purely inside cats now since we moved. I do take them outside on a harness though.

fluffyraggies · 03/01/2015 21:24

But the litter trays don't have to be ''full of wee and poo'', enjor. In exactly the same way that a toddlers potty is not left full and 'hanging around' Hmm

My 2 cats poo once a day each and if i'm home when they do it i hear them scraping so pick it up immediately. I have covered trays and deep wood chip litter, so it's never even very smelly if the poo gets left for a couple of hours. Litter gets changed weekly.

Sallystyle · 04/01/2015 13:17

I think it is more cruel to let cats out.

I see far too many dead cats in the road here to let mine out.

They have lots of things to do, the run of the house and they know no different.

lomega · 04/01/2015 13:24

YANBU, I agree the toilet is the place to keep them in, not somewhere you cook and eat food!

However, regardless of whether the litter box is in the bathroom or not, I HATE when owners are too lazy to clean them regularly and there's always a constant smell of piss in their house when you visit. Makes me gag. My SIL has 2 cats and keeps their boxes very clean (on her 2nd floor hallway infact...not my choice but you never smell them) so it can be done. My uncle has 3 indoor cats and does not clean the boxes out often so his whole house smells like pee. Makes me not want to visit!!

thegreylady · 04/01/2015 13:26

Ours are in the sunporch accessed by a catflap from the kitchen and another (magnetic) to/from outside. I wouldn't like them in the kitchen either.

usualsuspect333 · 04/01/2015 13:32

I don't have a conservatory,utility room,large enough bathroom,downstairs toilet or a cat that shits outside.

I do have a large enough kitchen and a litter tray that is emptied of shit everyday.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/01/2015 13:32

You can't argue with thousands of years of innate instinct U2. Some cats are more inclined to being indoors, many aren't though.
