We have a "gross" toilet and everyone refuses to use it

So how does it end up in such a state??

We have 3 bogs in our house - one downstairs, one en-suite and the main bathroom. The main bathroom was decorated when we first moved in to a "nautical" scene - pastel blue, sea shell canvas, blue stripey bath mats a seagull and fishing boat ornament on the window ledge.

I loved it.

A year later the carpet is stained with god knows what, the bathmats are stained and stink (no matter how often I wash them), the walls are sprayed with piss and the toilet is full of shit stains and just reeks. No matter how often I bleach and scrub it it ALWAYS looks like this within an hour of cleaning.

Now, DP refuses to use the "shit hole room" and so do the kids. So if nobody uses it - how the fuck is it in such a state????? It's ridiculous. The whole rooms stinks like a blokes pub toilet.

I recently peed on the bathroom floor by accident.

You can have that one for free MN.

You're welcome.

BingBongMerrilyOnHigh · 29/12/2014 16:33

We have carpet in our bathroom. Same carpet for over 6 years. It's still fine. This is because we don't wee all over the place. I also cover the floor by the bath and in front of the toilet, with appropriate rugs, which are periodically replaced.

Mind you, I've no idea what the landlord was doing, carpeting it in the first place, but that's another story...

OriginalGreenGiant · 29/12/2014 16:41

Sorry op but that's rank. There's just no excuse.

I have two little boys and one big boy (dh) all of whom appear to have trouble aiming.

My bathroom isn't like that. DH cleans up after himself if his aim goes wrong. The kids give the seat a quick wipe but I generally give the toilet, nearby wall and floor a wipe with antibacterial wipes before bed if needed. Get rid of your carpet and start cleaning more.

Piss covered walls and a shit stained toilet with mats that pong just doesn't happen if you're/DH are cleaning enough.

Discopanda · 29/12/2014 17:21

Get the cheapest bottle of cola you can and chuck it down your loo, it'll clean it right out. And for the love of God get rid of the carpets.

chopinbabe · 29/12/2014 17:45

Does cola work? I thought its only other use was for cooking a ham!

foreverondiet · 29/12/2014 18:11

Carpet in bathroom? No wonder its vile. Need to tile the walls around the toilet and also the floor. Throw away bath mats and buy new and wash - regularly. My 8 year old DS1 often in the night just wees everywhere - walls and floor - so end up cleaning around toilet every day.

BertieBotts · 29/12/2014 18:27

Coke works for taking grime off old keys and coins too. Anything grained on like that.

Royalsighness · 29/12/2014 18:33

Actually sitting here CRYING!!!! At this thread and the responses!!! Get them all in there with a brush and some bleach and say there's a shitting ban unless they use that toilet! As for the bathroom fabrics, bin them, bin anything that can't be bleached!

HaloItsMeFell · 29/12/2014 18:37

Get rid of the carpet. Carpets have NO PLACE in a bathroom. Of COURSE it stinks, if it's permanently impregnated with the urine. What did you expect? Confused

if your bathmats and loo mats smell you are either not washing them often enough or not washing them hot enough.

If you loo is permanently caked in shit you need to teach your family to use the loo brush after them.

If the walls and the loo seats are permanently splashed with wee you need to teach your family to be more careful and to clean up after themselves.

It's not that difficult to grasp, really. Confused

Honestly, an antibacterial wipe around the rim and the seat once a day,(about 45 seconds) a good go with the loo brush with some bleach down the bowl once a day, (about 45 seconds) a clean mat every other day and a weekly spray and wipedown of the wall (about 45 seconds) - how hard can it be? Confused

HaloItsMeFell · 29/12/2014 18:39

the bathmats are stained and stink (no matter how often I wash them)

the toilet is full of shit stains and just reeks. No matter how often I bleach and scrub it it ALWAYS looks like this within an hour of cleaning.

Yes but how often do you clean them?

Salmotrutta · 29/12/2014 18:45

Where is the OP?

Do we think she may have fallen down the loo whilst trying to scrub out the stains?

Should we alert emergency services? On the non-emergency number of course.

Bulbasaur · 29/12/2014 18:47

Bigger question, why are you the one cleaning it? Make DH and the boys do it. Their shit, their problem. My parents would just see a messy room and tell me and DB to clean it. They didn't care who did what. That might be a good start to do the same with DH and the boys.

I don't understand how anyone can miss the toilet. I had a brother and our toilets never got in such a state.

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 29/12/2014 18:48

Has OP been back?
Maybe she is busy trying to clean and de carpet the bathroom whilst wearing a gas mask....

I hate carpet in bathrooms. It isn't just bad aims that can cause a problem with the carpets but so can the constant wetness from drips after people have exited fom the bath or shower.
The bath mats need to be binned. There is no point trying to save bath mats which you can't get to smell clean, they are not expensive to replace. But there would be no point putting new bath mats onto stinky carpet so the carpet also has to be replaced.
I can't understand how shit stains can keep appearing if nobody is using the toilet. It is either the toilet has permanent stains or there is a man secretly living in the loft and sneaking down daily to shit all over the toilet bowl or the household members are just lying about using it because they can be arsed to clean up after themselves (I'm betting on the last one).
Bleach the loo and tape it up overnight to let the bleach work without anybody being able to use the loo (you have other useable loos).

Salmotrutta · 29/12/2014 18:49

My money is on the man in the loft... Grin

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 29/12/2014 18:51

Or a whole family with faecal incontinence living in the loft.....Grin

Stillyummy · 31/12/2014 08:44

Bump

JingleBellSniffer · 31/12/2014 15:29

carpets?? are you serious? tiles, dear. Lino. Anything. and if your boys are pissing and shitting up the walls you need a serious talk with them.
How disgusting. You can't live like that surely?
piss up the walls is a sure sign ofsomething wrong - not toilet trained properly? or just little arseholes who have no respect?
serious words are needed. I'd make THEM scrub it.
you need a whole new bathroom suite.

Allseeingallknowing · 30/08/2025 21:04

Fabulous46 · 28/12/2014 21:39

Is it really only me that has bathroom carpet and a house that doesn't in any way smell of damp piss

No it's not. I have a cream carpet in all of our en suites. None are pished on and none smell.

How do you know they have not been pissed on?

SuPollardsPolkaDotFrock · 30/08/2025 21:06

Allseeingallknowing · 30/08/2025 21:04

How do you know they have not been pissed on?

You do know this thread is 11 years old?

Laura95167 · 30/08/2025 21:15

Carpet AND mats in the main bathroom?

Carpet in the bathroom is why it stinks, pull that up and tile it. Get rid of the mats. Then scrub the walls - vinegar and bicarb of soda, or washing up liquid.

Put a brush and bleach in it. So they can clean up after themselves

Allseeingallknowing · 30/08/2025 21:16

SuPollardsPolkaDotFrock · 30/08/2025 21:06

You do know this thread is 11 years old?

So why has it reappeared on Mumsnet?

gamerchick · 30/08/2025 21:30

Allseeingallknowing · 30/08/2025 21:16

So why has it reappeared on Mumsnet?

Because you bumped it. Hmm

BertieBotts · 30/08/2025 22:51

TBF, it could have been bumped by a pee troll and then that poster saw it in active and responded as though it was current. Sometimes MN just quietly remove a troll/perv/spam post rather than leaving a deletion message.

NuovaPilbeam · 30/08/2025 22:56

Why the fuck have you got carpet in a bathroom

Foreverondiet · 31/08/2025 07:08

Replace carpet with tiles. Carpets in a bathroom is an error. Walls need to be tiled to waist height behind toilet or will be difficult to clean, again an error. The toilet can be cleaned with the right material. The bath mats you might need to replace.
