We have a "gross" toilet and everyone refuses to use it

So how does it end up in such a state??

We have 3 bogs in our house - one downstairs, one en-suite and the main bathroom. The main bathroom was decorated when we first moved in to a "nautical" scene - pastel blue, sea shell canvas, blue stripey bath mats a seagull and fishing boat ornament on the window ledge.

I loved it.

A year later the carpet is stained with god knows what, the bathmats are stained and stink (no matter how often I wash them), the walls are sprayed with piss and the toilet is full of shit stains and just reeks. No matter how often I bleach and scrub it it ALWAYS looks like this within an hour of cleaning.

Now, DP refuses to use the "shit hole room" and so do the kids. So if nobody uses it - how the fuck is it in such a state????? It's ridiculous. The whole rooms stinks like a blokes pub toilet.

My ILs have carpet in both their main bathroom and their downstairs loo. It doesn't smell but still makes me cringe, both in terms of hygiene and aesthetics!

Froggio · 28/12/2014 19:55

Does it look as though the toilet seat has eroded away on the underside? If so, this will be really difficult to get rid of because urine has infiltrated the plastic and eroded it and it's really difficult to get rid of the smell. Get a new toilet seat and wipe it on the underside daily with antibac wipes.

And get rid of the carpet and bath mats. Paint the walls again after completely deep cleaning them with bleach or washing powder.

Is it actually shit stains inside or mould/dirt? Bleach with a descaler could work. Leave it in there over night.

I didn't realise I knew that much about toilet cleaning!

ithoughtofitfirst · 28/12/2014 19:57

I heart MN.

19lottie82 · 28/12/2014 19:58

Yeah. Carpets in a bathroom are not nice. I know I had one in a rented place years ago. Even bath mats need washed at least once a week to stop them ponging.

marne2 · 28/12/2014 19:59

I don't like carpets in bathrooms, they wouldn't last a week in my house ( what with dd chucking water out of the bath and dh drinking coffee whilst sat on the loo ), tiles are the way to go. Get a new bath mat, one that can be washed in the washing machine ( we wash ours once a week ), bleach the loo every day and teach the kids not to piss on the floor or walls Smile. My dd's use the downstairs loo during the day, upstairs is mine Grin.

bendybrickpumpkinpatch · 28/12/2014 20:00

Rip up carpet.
Throw away any bath mats.
Replace toilet seat.
Scrub walls
Wipe loo seat walls and surrounding area EVERY day with antibacterial wipes. Mop floor with bleach.

Jesus its not hard.

PS.please post a pic Grin

Not only do I have carpet in all three of my bathrooms but I have carpet on a toilet cistern!! So classy!! It was here when we moved in & we're saving to get downstairs bathroom & the toilet next to it knocked into one bigger room so have left it as it is!! Lovely conversation piece!!

Greencurtain · 28/12/2014 20:02

Clean it thoroughly. Lock it from the outside if possible.
Inspect in 24 hrs time.
If it's dirty and you are rich enough then rip it out!
I should say that I have a 17 year old carpet in my bathroom Grin

Stillyummy · 28/12/2014 20:03

I agree with patch, a pic would help.

Vicks72 · 28/12/2014 20:03

Not 3 bathrooms - one bathroom, toilet room & ensuite shower!

Titsalinabumsquash · 28/12/2014 20:04

Ahh this reminds me of my first flat I was allocated after DS1 was born, I walked into the bathroom to be greeted by an avocado suite, dark brown carpet, not only on the floor but half way up the walls to a dado rail and up the side of the bath (wtf?!)
Above the dado rail was dark orange.
The cleaners hadn't been in yet and I'm pretty sure there was a new Civilisation growing in that toilet

Luckily the HA guy saw the state of it and arranged for the lot to be redone before we moved in, they asked if I had colour preference, I said anything other than what it was will be grand. Confused

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 28/12/2014 20:05

Merry Christmas, poo troll

whothehellknows · 28/12/2014 20:06

How many boys do you have? My ex used to be awful for sprayback when he would wee and we had a radiator right next to the toilet. It was minging!

VivaLeBeaver · 28/12/2014 20:06

Can't believe that noone has yet asked if you have a toilet brush?

merlehaggard · 28/12/2014 20:08

I think carpet is a big mistake.

gamerchick · 28/12/2014 20:08

I definitely would like to see a picture.

happybubblebrain · 28/12/2014 20:08

Lock the whole family in there and find somewhere else to live.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 28/12/2014 20:10

Weird. Even for MN.

softlysoftly · 28/12/2014 20:13

I have carpets I will ALWAYS have carpets in a bathroom (not single loo). Firstly I hate cold wet tile/lino in a bathing place secondly they are bloody dangerous and slippy when wet.

Friend of my sister slipped on wet tile when her 2 kids were in the bath and knocked herself out. By the time she came round the toddler had drowned Sad.

I don't see them as a problem but then none of my family would puss on them / the walls Shock

Hatespiders · 28/12/2014 20:14

I think you have a Shit-and-Poo Ghost. You should post about it on the strange stories thread. Could a local clairvoyant shed some light on the mysterious stink? Perhaps the vicar could exorcise it for you?

AlpacaYourThings · 28/12/2014 20:19

Fuck, that is disgusting.

bloodyteenagers · 28/12/2014 20:22

Well piss on the wall is the males in the house. Piss everywhere else is anyone.
Carpets and toilets are rank.
You don't need a carpet in the bathroom, you need bath mats.
These stop the floor from getting
Slippy, and unlike carpet can be chucked in the washing machine. Hence more than one is needed.
If funds are short, use the small towels in sets, and use the next size up as the hand one.

flamingoland · 28/12/2014 20:25

this site is so full of contradictions- for a bunch who largely claim to be so liberal and inclusive, the replies on this thread are snobbier than my mum in 5th gear hyacinth bucket mode

Titsalinabumsquash · 28/12/2014 20:25

Carpets in bathrooms are a breeding ground for all sorts of unspeakable things.

If you are even slightly at risk of respiratory or skin disease then you will suffer a lot from damp, festering bathroom carpets.

You need washable mats at the very most if slipperiness is a worry.

thenightsky · 28/12/2014 20:27

DS and DH always protested that they NEVER sprayed when peeing. I proved they did by taping sheets of newspaper to the walls around the loo and cutting a pedestal shaped sheet of newspaper to find around the loo on the floor.

At the end of just one day all the paper was soaked, the print had run and it had gone all wrinkly from being wet.
