Sorry going to get my Scrooge half hour out of the way, have tried to sit on my hands but can't any longer.Feel free to flame.

So we had our belated letter from school proclaiming the last day as Xmas jumper charidee day.Not having a spare £30 to blow on chuck away clothing items that won't survive the washing machine my dc went without a cheap nylon child labour crafted master piece and survived however I do feel the need to grumble.

Many parents will feel pressurised to buy the above from a cut price outlet and I suspect some kids of those that don't will feel a tad awkward.

I'd rather send my £30 to the charity involved instead of Primark.

We're all a tad cash strapped as it is this time of year.

So aibu?

This kind of thing needs to be nipped in the bud. Schools seem to be making more and more ridiculous demands on parents pockets. Time to say "No sorry, can't afford it, will go in normal clothes" Let them get the message.

However at my dc's concert, one class all had to wear Xmas jumpers and I couldn't help feeling for the one or two who didn't have one.

Whilst I agree with most of what's been said about fundraising etc the children at ds's school did enjoy CJD and there was a photo in the school newsletter! Ds had an old jumper that he managed to squeeze into and lots of children wore decorated tshirts or whatever. They all had fun. My main issue was that I'm still annoyed about Save the Children giving Tony Blair an award.

Anyway, the reason I quoted the above was to say that if there is any common sense this problem is quite easy to solve. When your dcs outgrow their jumpers give them to the school so they can have a few in a cupboard for any children who have 'forgotten to bring their jumper'. Then no one gets left out because they can't afford a jumper. Alternatively donate them for the school to sell for a couple of pounds to cash-strapped/time-poor parents and give the money to the charity or school minibus fund.

i bought 3 christmas jumpers yesterday, for my teens. and they had none left in Primark, luckily for me, i bought them from an independent shop and they were, Made in UK!

My kids just don't do this. They don't want to so I am lucky. I don't think it's snobbery to think you don't want to waste money on stuff you don't like.

Merry Christmas everyone.....

I hope some of you cheer up before Thursday.

ToffeeCaramel · 22/12/2014 09:30

Glad our school just did jumper day and not Christmas jumper day as then the kids could just wear any jumper or sweater that they already had.

funnyossity · 22/12/2014 09:32

Merry Christmas cheif, have a great one!

rollonthesummer · 22/12/2014 09:33

Ours was 'decorate a Christmas jumper day' -was lovely. Stick on a snowflake or a bit of tinsel to a jumper we already had. Didn't cost a penny.

whoneedssleepanyway · 22/12/2014 09:35

I got my DD a reindeer sweatshirt from H&M it cost 5 and was really nice and has been washed and is fine.

Her school suggested customising an existing jumper with tinsel etc so you didn't have to buy one.

funnyossity · 22/12/2014 09:38

If this comes back again next year I'll try to remember to do that rollonthesummer. Then again we haven't usually got the decorations out the evening they announce this..paper snowflake cutout is the way to go I think.

rollonthesummer · 22/12/2014 09:44

One of the children in DD's class covered herself in paper snowflakes attached with safety pins. She'd obviously done it herself and looked really good!!

I totally agree with you op. I also resented having to spend money on something made in a factory in India to be wear once, in aid of Save the Children!!

My DS had a Christmas jumper day - he is quite conscious about fitting in and wearing the right thing, and knew that most of his friends would be wearing 'proper' Christmas jumpers. So I bought him one from Primark which cost £7. He enjoyed wearing it to school, but I know that he will probably only wear it once or twice as it's not the sort of thing he will wear out of school. Such a waste of money!!
