I have spent the best part of two hours attempting to decorate ds a third birthday cake. He requested a sweetie train cake which I have tried my best to do.
Now I will confess it does look a bit like a boat and not exactly professional but a lot of love went in to it.
DH laughed at it and said it was shit and ds will probably say its rubbish.
Now I'm right pissed off with him. He thinks I'm being over sensitive. Aibu or is he?

Not read whole thread yet, but there is NOTHING wrong with that cake and your DH was an arse!
Your DS will love it and I guarantee he will remember it in years to come, I remember nearly every cake my Mum lovingly made for me as a child whether they were good or bad!
If DH thinks he can do better tell him to have a crack at next years and see how it goes!

Fevertree · 17/12/2014 12:53

that is an amazing cake! well done OP you smashed it

YouSitOnAThroneOfLies · 17/12/2014 12:57

You'll have to come back and tell us what DS thought of it

MrsCosmopifairylight · 17/12/2014 13:14

Your cake is lovely! Your DH is being very rude.

I've been "tasked" with making a 'rainbow' cake for DD's upcoming birthday. She can't decide whether it's to be rainbow inside or outside. I'm hoping for the latter, but can probably put something together.
Last year she wanted one that was sparkly with a fairy on, cue me frantically looking up sugarpaste modelling tutorials on youtube.
My mantra is 'if in doubt, shove glitter on it'. If there is no glitter, then add sweets.

ineedsomeinspiration · 17/12/2014 14:35

It's not stealth boast I promise, my cakes are usually yummy but decorating isn't my strong point. DS doesn't like fondant so had to do buttercream which made it harder. It's his birthday tomorrow so I'll let you know what he thinks.

MrsCosmopifairylight
I made my db a piñata cake, three layers of Victoria sponge with rainbow sprinkles in. Middle layer has a circle cut out and filled with m&ms, whole thing covered in buttercream. It was very easy and very effective.

Your cake is lovely and I'm sure your DS will love it, I'm not a cake maker I don't mind admitting and my sons come from tesco or sainsburys every year Grin, I've bought a ginger bread house to put together this year and Im dreading that

MrsCosmopifairylight · 17/12/2014 15:32

Great Pinata cake!

AlwaysDancing1234 · 17/12/2014 16:11

I really want some cake now! All of them look great and I'm sure your DC appreciate your efforts even if the finished product didn't look 'perfect'.
I'm off to find some cake to eat!

ineedsomeinspiration · 17/12/2014 16:17

Just found this and feeling a bit better now.

Your cake is ace! Really really good.

Make a cake in the shape of a dick for dh's birthday. Tell him 'you are what you eat, tuck in.'

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 17/12/2014 16:32

Betty crocker's looks like a boat. Yours is fab. If it makes you feel any better, in the haze of exhaustion that was DC3's early January first birthday I spelt his name wrong in icing on the top. Managed to correct it while crying in front of my mum. Not my finest hour.

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 17/12/2014 16:33

Google cake wrecks. You'll thank me.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 17/12/2014 16:47

Chocolate fingers for railway track? It looks great!

Billybear20 · 17/12/2014 17:03

That's brilliant! Better than anything I could make..Smile

Godcreatedcricket · 17/12/2014 20:36

My Mum made all my birthday cakes when I was a wee girl. I can still remember them all and I'm 37. And they all looked as brill as yours does. Your husband was being a knob, and you should tell him so. Your son will think it's fab (and will probably remember it fondly when he's all grown up)

MumsyFoxy · 17/12/2014 20:42

That's brilliant!

Thumbnutstwitchingonanopenfire · 18/12/2014 15:25

Has he had his cake yet? Did he like it? Did he say anything other than "Wow, great cake!"?
AND - do you have a pic of him with cake all round his face? (My favourite kind Wink)

Corygal · 18/12/2014 15:29

That cake is entirely gorgeous!!! WELL DONE, IT'S AMAZEBALLS.

Bugger your dreadful DH. Don't let a crumb pass his lips.

TheListingAttic · 18/12/2014 15:32

Eh? What's wrong with it?! Looks like a train to me! And love the fact the carriages actually carry a little stash of sweets! Guess your DH won't be wanting a slice, eh?

Nomama · 18/12/2014 15:42

Tell your DH to fuck off and sleep at his mum's for a year.

There is nothing shite about that cake!

ineedsomeinspiration · 18/12/2014 21:42

Had his birthday tea tonight and he loved it and he knew it was a train so may have had a little gloat to dh.
No cake round face pics I'm afraid. He likes cake too much to get it anywhere other than his mouth. I asked him what his favourite bit of his birthday was and he said his cake Grin . DH didn't have any as he doesn't like cake. Everyone else said was delicious. xx

Glad your DS enjoyed his birthday tea and his cake, well done OP!

GooodMythicalMorning · 18/12/2014 22:32

I once attempted a dr who type cake that went completely wrong, it was a black and blue swirly mess. In the end I nicked one of ds's Tardis models and stuck it in the middle so it looked kinda like it was being sucked into a vortex. Wasn't my finest cake but ds liked it.
