I have spent the best part of two hours attempting to decorate ds a third birthday cake. He requested a sweetie train cake which I have tried my best to do.
Now I will confess it does look a bit like a boat and not exactly professional but a lot of love went in to it.
DH laughed at it and said it was shit and ds will probably say its rubbish.
Now I'm right pissed off with him. He thinks I'm being over sensitive. Aibu or is he?

your cake is lovely and I think you will have a very happy 3 year old tomorrow. the only boat like bit is the fact that the front curves into a 'prow'. The chocolate finger cowcatcher is genius though

can you square it off a bit or add something to look like 'panelling' - give the eye an illusion of an edge/squareness at the side?
I speak from experience as I had a 'bus' cake with the same 'boat' problem and adding some thin strips of icing in the shape that was meant to be there seemed to solve it. I had also made the icing schiaparelli pink instead of red Blush but couldnt solve that so served it by candle light and no one noticed Grin

Shakey1500 · 16/12/2014 23:39

Bloody hell that's FAB!

I'm 45 and the last time I made a cake was in 1986 for my CSE's Blush

Is he normally this much of a twat? Eitherway, he's a twat.

Purplepoodle · 16/12/2014 23:39

Your 3 year old will love it. It's green and got sweets, he will see its a train (ok so front bit looks a boat like - but it's still fab, carriages are brilliant - tell Dh to go jump)

Boomtownsurprise · 16/12/2014 23:42

Aw I love your cake. My dds would have been cockahoop with it.

As will your son.

Dh laughed at dds 2nd bday cake. I've made him help me ice the last two. He ain't laughing any more and I've got a helper. Win win ! Xmas Grin

Shodan · 16/12/2014 23:46

I used to make cakes like that for ds1 when he was little.

My best efforts were a train (Swiss roll, chocolate fingers etc- nothing like as elaborate as yours!) and a football pitch (looked like moles had been all over it Grin)

D'you know what? He still remembers them (he's 18 now). And only recently mentioned them and how chuffed he still is that I put in so much effort "just for my birthday cake".

So. Give the cake to your DS with the pride it deserves.

And give your Dh the treatment he deserves for being such an arse.

Thumbnutstwitchingonanopenfire · 16/12/2014 23:49

Is your H usually this unsupportive? Is this normal behaviour for him? He's still a wanker, btw, whatever the answer is - just wondering if he's ALWAYS a wanker or just over this.

I'd definitely tell him that it's his turn next time since he's obviously such a fucking expert...

OriginalGreenGiant · 16/12/2014 23:51

Op that's really good. Your dh is being an asshole.

Can I make a suggestion though? The only thing that's missing for me is a bit of detail on the engine as it's a much paler colour. I would get a darker shade of icing and just pipe straight lines over all the straight edges to make it stand out.

dwarfrabbit · 17/12/2014 00:01

Definitely a train

Coumarin · 17/12/2014 00:02

Is a brilliant cake! Your son will be thrilled. Heck, I'm 33 and I'd be thrilled. Grin It genuinely looks great and you should be proud.

Your husband is being a complete twunt. Even if it was a bit rubbish, (which it's not), after hours of effort he shouldn't even think of saying something so horrible.

StarbuckGalactica · 17/12/2014 02:34

It does look like a boat but it's still awesome!

missbishi · 17/12/2014 03:25

We all think your cake is fantastic and DS will LOVE it. DH, on the other hand, is full of shite, don't listen to him!

Boleh · 17/12/2014 04:26

It's awesome, I'd be perfectly happy if I'd paid for a sweetie train cake and that turned up!
Have a look at the cakewrecks blog and see how much better yours is than many professional cakes. Smile
I am making my 1st attempt at royal icing for our Christmas cake, I asked my DP what he thought of the decorations. He said he liked the stars so I prompted him about the writing, he very gingerly suggested that he didn't want to make me cross then admitted that he thought maybe the piping of the letters was a bit uneven in thickness - he was terrified of upsetting me! It is uneven because of the way I've piped it but he'd never dare saunter over and just tell me it was rubbish because he knows the effort that's gone in. It has made me think about how I could do it next time. Your DH does sound a bit of an arse!

43percentburnt · 17/12/2014 05:04

It's fab, I would love it for my birthday! Your ds will love it.

Your dh is an arse. How much effort has he made for your ds birthday?

AlwaysDancing1234 · 17/12/2014 05:08

I think your cake looks awesome!
I once planned a Lego bricks cake for DS birthday but chickened out and did a shop bought one as I was too worried about MIL slagging it off and general ridicule, wish Id ignore her and done the homemade one.
So ignore your DH, cake looks fab and I bet your DS will love it

AlwaysDancing1234 · 17/12/2014 05:13

The best cake I ever had as a kid was a stable made out of Cadbury flakes with icing on the roof that my Step-Mum made me. A little bit wonky but she put a lot of time and effort in which meant a lot

HicDraconis · 17/12/2014 05:16

This was my version - yours is fab!

You could make some popcorn "steam" with popped kernels on a slightly bent wire stuck in the funnel too :)

TheRealAmandaClarke · 17/12/2014 05:25

Fab cake.
Ltb Xmas Wink

MissYamabuki · 17/12/2014 05:58

I think it looks great Smile

If the "looks like a boat" thing is bothering you, I second introducing more detail and definition on the engine (dark piping to outline "doors", maybe try oreos for wheels).

The kids will love it.

ineedsomeinspiration · 17/12/2014 06:08

He has many redeeming features but empathy and tact are not always among them. I find it weird as he grew up with two sisters. I'm sure I'll get an apology today.
Thank you for all your lovely comments, I'll shall take dhs on the chin and see what ds reaction is, hopefully good.
I'm a bit worried that any attempt to rectify the "boat" look will result in complete disaster. Think I might go with it being amphibious.

FishWithABicycle · 17/12/2014 06:18

That's a brilliant cake! Your DH is an arse and owes you an apology.

I think it looks much more like a train than a boat but the tiny hint of boatiness would be much relieved if you could find a way to lay the cakes out in a straight line - is it too late for that?

Your DS will be over the moon. I'm not able to post a pic of the really terrible bus cake I made, but trust me it didn't look very bus like and it taught me that DCs really don't mind or expect photo-realism in their cakes.

HSMMaCM · 17/12/2014 06:21

Since when did a boat have wheels? It looks great. I'm so glad DD asked for a chocolate crispy cake for her 3rd :)

Thumbnutstwitchingonanopenfire · 17/12/2014 06:23

This is DS1's 3rd birthday cake - yours is WAY more interesting! Grin

PunkrockerGirl · 17/12/2014 06:24

It's fabulous - your ds will love it! Hope he has a lovely birthday.

thetimeisnow · 17/12/2014 06:29

My 1st thought was 'that's brilliant!'
Well done you for making a lovely birthday cake.
Ds will love it I'm sure. Happy birthday to him :-)

velocityofrudolph · 17/12/2014 06:38

Must be something about 3 yr olds. I made this one for mine, 21 years ago. It wasn't great, but he loved it, as I'm sure yours will too. It's cake, it's sweets, but most importantly, Mummy made it.

Hope he has a great birthday!
