To chuckle when I met a family with matching personalised number plates!

I certainly raised an eyebrow, and stifled an inner chuckle when I met this family...

OK so Mum, Dad, 20-something Son and Daughter have a car each, so 4 cars with 4 personalised number plates.

Say Mum is called Emma Sophie Lanchester, her number plate is:
FAM4 ESL

Say Dad is called Humphrey Charles Lanchester, his number plate is:
FAM4 HCL

Obviously these are not the real names and number plates but you get the idea! They all start with the same four letters, and end with the drivers initials.

Of course the parents have matching Range Rovers, and the two kids have an Audi each!

At first I was Hmm, but then I was Grin at the things some people will waste their money on! AIBU?

Personal plates are sooooo common where I am. It does make it very easy to report twattish drivers (of which there are many).

DH's car is quite old but on its original plate, people keep asking us what it stands for. I'm thinking about changing my name by deed poll to match it.

My favourite local plate is W1NGE.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 16/12/2014 08:18

Gosh, is it really time to do this again?

I love personalised number-plates. It is short-hand for knowing someone is a dick.

I love these thread as it essentially shows the same thing for a different set of people.

Sparklingbrook · 16/12/2014 08:20

It's always time for a PP thread Soup. I am a bit worried that there hasn't been a cat poo in the garden thread for weeks. Shock

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 16/12/2014 08:20

Or dog poo for that matter. What is the world coming to?!

Sparklingbrook · 16/12/2014 08:21

YY distinct lack of poo all round. I think we are due a shoes off in the house thread though.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 16/12/2014 08:22

It must be possible to combine all three...

Baubelicious · 16/12/2014 08:23

Waste of money but their money to waste.

Sparklingbrook · 16/12/2014 08:24

AIBU to walk through cat and dog poo then stroll across friend's cream living room carpet with my shoes on?

'Save money on expensive personalised car number plates by simply changing your name to match your existing plate. - Submitted by Mr. KVL 741Y'

I bet a fair number of posters on this thread who are making sweeping judgements about personalised number plates spent more on alcohol this year alone than I spent on my number plate 4 years ago. I also bet a fair number of those behaved more like an idiot having drunk said alcohol than I ever have in my car.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 16/12/2014 09:15

And yes, Sparkling, YABVVVVVVU! How could you even think about it. Although what was your friend thinking, having cream carpet?

"It shows that the person who needs to find an excuse to laugh at others, is sadly lacking."

We're laughing at the numberplates Birds, not at the way someone talks or walks or anything like that. I would also roll my eyes at someone spending thousands of pounds on a handbag. And I know sometimes people laugh at how scatterbrained I am with money. I don't think they're 'sadly lacking'. Rather sour statement to make.

JustSpeakSense · 16/12/2014 10:11

I like personalised number plates.....when I see them coming it is a good forewarning that I am about to meet a twat! Grin

DeckTheHoopsWithBoughsOfHolly · 16/12/2014 10:30

You shouldn't pre-judge people just on their number plate.

I sometimes see an expensive looking Mercedes in Hampton with the number plate F4T HO.

I really did not mentally picture the owner as a small slightly built Chinese looking man.

WeeFreeKings · 16/12/2014 10:41

My PILs have matching ones but they're really shit because they're his initials with totally random numbers. And they're a pain to change over when you get a new car. I do think family matching number plates is wanky but then I'll never be able to afford any myself so I can sit all smug about not having them!

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 16/12/2014 11:32

We're laughing at the numberplates Birds

No, you are judging the person.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 16/12/2014 11:59

Bogey about your dads comment... I feel the same about people with their own names tattooed on their bodies. As I've said before though, their money...

Sprink · 16/12/2014 12:09

Genuine questions: how does a personalised plate hide the age of a car and why would someone want to hide the age of the car? Baffled.

Fallingovercliffs · 16/12/2014 12:10

Yes we are laughing at the numberplates and forming an opinion about the owner. That's different from 'laughing at the owner'.

And of course people form judgments from people's outward behaviour. That's life.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 16/12/2014 12:13

Sprink standard reg plates show they year I believe such as WW05 WWW would be an 05 model I think

Sprink · 16/12/2014 12:23

Thanks, Glitz. (Okay, I can't think of a good reason why this would be important information for the public but never mind.)

Now, as to why someone would want to hide the age of the car? Again, sorry to be dim but surely that's fairly obvious by what the car looks like?

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 16/12/2014 12:35

Yes we are laughing at the numberplates and forming an opinion about the owner. That's different from 'laughing at the owner'.

No, it really isn't.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 16/12/2014 12:35

Sprink I don't think it is always obvious to look at a car as to how old it is, especially for high end models.

If it is in good condition and in a colour that doesn't date or fade a 10-15 year old car can look almost like new, or certainly no more than 3-5 years old.

As we have seen on here, people make a lot of assumptions about the type of car you drive, how old it is and what the number plate says, so some people think it is worth disgusing the age.

There are plenty of people that see driving/owning a car more than 3-5 years old as a sign of failure or poverty and there are also probably an equal number of people who see driving a new car as a sign as having more money than sense or poor money management.

Obviously the type of car you drive, how old it is and what the number plate says doesn't say very much about anyone really as that shiny new car could be on finance that the driver cannot afford, or it could be a company car, or that person with an old cheap car could be very well off and just not be excited about cars or care the image that they present to others.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 16/12/2014 12:37

Sorry forgot to say, that the plate cannot be used to make the car appear newer, only older, but in most cases the plates used are very old, eg BOB 1 would probably be worth an absolute fortune from one of the first cars ever made.
