To chuckle when I met a family with matching personalised number plates!

I certainly raised an eyebrow, and stifled an inner chuckle when I met this family...

OK so Mum, Dad, 20-something Son and Daughter have a car each, so 4 cars with 4 personalised number plates.

Say Mum is called Emma Sophie Lanchester, her number plate is:
FAM4 ESL

Say Dad is called Humphrey Charles Lanchester, his number plate is:
FAM4 HCL

Obviously these are not the real names and number plates but you get the idea! They all start with the same four letters, and end with the drivers initials.

Of course the parents have matching Range Rovers, and the two kids have an Audi each!

At first I was Hmm, but then I was Grin at the things some people will waste their money on! AIBU?

My OH and I once had then 1 number apart. we bought 2 new cars at the same time- didnt even think about it- even odder guy on the next road had the number after.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2014 18:13

If the PP spells (or sort of spells) their first name it does make it easier when criticising their driving from behind. Grin

Ilovehamabeads · 15/12/2014 18:47

I have one. It's mostly to hide the age of my car.

Libitina · 15/12/2014 18:56

I've seen two cars locally on more than one occasion that say

Hi5
and
Her5.

Makes me smile.

Icelollycraving · 15/12/2014 19:04

We own one but it's not on our car as Dh currently has a company car. He got it as a suprise,I was underwhelmed. My nickname & his age when we married. All ok except he's 10 years older so makes me much older.

LynetteScavo · 15/12/2014 19:08

I have a personalised plate. DH paid £250 for it. He could easily sell it for £4k now.

Not sure how much of a dick that makes him.

tbh I'd rather have a regular plate and a nice holiday

mangoespadrille · 15/12/2014 19:10

We live a new build estate and they are hugely popular here. The most noteworthy is a woman who has ELLO 80YS (on her Beamer, naturally). I always wonder what her DP/DC think (we often see them going in/out of their five bed detached and assume they are a family) and what sort of reactions she gets when driving around.

I would never get one because I find just choosing a car very tedious, let alone a number to stick on it, but each to their own. What I do have is a postcode that ends with FU, which is often said with heavy emphasis when on the phone to, say, the tax office or British sodding Gas.

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 15/12/2014 19:12

I know a family like this. They all have the dad's initials, then a random letter, then 1 (him) 2 (wife) and 3 and 4 (son and daughter). It looks ridiculous.

LynetteScavo · 15/12/2014 19:13

Oh and the reason DH gave me the plate is that I can't remember things- or so he thinks...he is able to memorise any number plate he sees forever...and believes that's normal, and to stop me cutting people up...everyone knows it's me because my car has my name on it. Blush

clam · 15/12/2014 19:19

I have one and I'm very Blush about it. In my defence, it was on the car when I bought it, and they wanted me to pay to swap it back to a normal one. I nearly did it, thinking it was worth any amount of money for people not to think I was a twat, but then I realised that I didn't have a hope in hell of remembering the "new" number plate format, so I kept it.

Andrewofgg · 15/12/2014 19:35

The only one I ever wanted was FU2 or FU2OK and they were never issued. There are also no TIT or BUM plates. Killjoy was here.

GristletoeAndWhine · 15/12/2014 19:43

DH has one. He claims it is an investment. All my ILs have them too. Embarrassing and twattish.

ithoughtofitfirst · 15/12/2014 19:48

So naff.

MidniteScribbler · 15/12/2014 21:04

I have two cars, both with personalised plates. One car has the breed of dogs I own, the other has my breeding prefix. My money, I can choose what to spend it on.

Bogeyface · 15/12/2014 21:10

There is a dad at school who is an utter tosser. He is the loud parent, the one who thinks that yellow zig zag lines indicate his personal parking space, will cheerfully push his way to the front of any queue and always ignores the "no photos" rule at school events (we have some vulnerable children there, its not the head being pissy). He has a huge long car (compensating......?) with a personalised plate that spells his name. Unfortunately his name was slang for a certain contraceptive device back in the the 80's, so he is known as Dobber in the school yard :o

Bogeyface · 15/12/2014 21:16

DIL bought a new car and I asked her if she had bought the plate specially, she said no and look quizzical until I pointed out that, apart from the number, it spelled her hair colour. She hadnt realised and is now selling it for ££££!

OddFodd · 15/12/2014 21:17

They are hugely naff. And sort of weirdly childish - I stopped putting my name on possessions when I started secondary school.

Bogeyface · 15/12/2014 21:24

Just remembered something my dad said about personal plates. "Why put your name on your car? You already know it and I dont care" :o

landrover · 15/12/2014 21:25

I loooove mine, it is MUM xxx

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2014 21:27

The thing is now they are ten a penny. I think they used to be a bit of an original novelty but now the world and his wife have them so they are just a bit boringly normal maybe.

JohnCusacksWife · 15/12/2014 21:40

We had a really heated argument in the office about this once. Everyone thought they were wanky apart from the people who had them (unsurprisingly)! The only exception was one poor girl whose DH had bought her one and she hadn't the heart to tell him she hated it!

Mandatorymongoose · 15/12/2014 21:47

My favourites are a car I used to walk past a lot "34 DD" - never saw the owner but in my head I picture a woman who's very proud of her assets and P5Y CH0 (H might be a 4 - I can't remember) which told me everything I needed to know about staying well out of its way.

utopian99 · 16/12/2014 04:22

My favourite (spotted by dh as well, same route, same car - something like an audi R8 - separate occasion,) is PAN1C. If I had buckets'o'bucks I would buy that. Not sure it would be worth it for anything else though..

EleanorAbernathy · 16/12/2014 04:34

I got all excited when I found out that SL11NKY was available - as my car is called Slinky Malinki Blush

Unfortunately not only does the plate cost more than my car is worth and I could never afford it in a million years, but it can only be used on a car from 2011 or newer, and poor old Slinky is just too old!

ImpatientOne · 16/12/2014 04:38

I have one but also think they are pretty naff. My parents had them so I was used to it so bought one with a new car. All of ours are just initials though so fairly discreet in amongst some of these examples! Grin
