To chuckle when I met a family with matching personalised number plates!

I certainly raised an eyebrow, and stifled an inner chuckle when I met this family...

OK so Mum, Dad, 20-something Son and Daughter have a car each, so 4 cars with 4 personalised number plates.

Say Mum is called Emma Sophie Lanchester, her number plate is:
FAM4 ESL

Say Dad is called Humphrey Charles Lanchester, his number plate is:
FAM4 HCL

Obviously these are not the real names and number plates but you get the idea! They all start with the same four letters, and end with the drivers initials.

Of course the parents have matching Range Rovers, and the two kids have an Audi each!

At first I was Hmm, but then I was Grin at the things some people will waste their money on! AIBU?

What a strange sense of humour. Hmm

SparkleZilla · 15/12/2014 16:43

I dont like personal plates, think that they are tacky (and too easy to remember when you have a bit of road rage)

I think the only cars that look ok with them, are the really expensive cars where you want to conceal the age of the car.. (in my own view)

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2014 16:44

Oh right QT. Sounds like they may be like DB's. Smile

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2014 16:46

One reason given for having PP was that they made your car easier to find in a car park. I think a 99p ariel topper does that nicely. Not that I have one, or have difficulty finding my car in a car park. Grin

QuacksLikeADuck · 15/12/2014 16:46

Ooh there's more of it about than I realised! I thought this family were a rarity.

But... matching coats! ShockGrin

I don't normally really see the point of private plates, but I used to live close to a car (it was just a small hatchback, but seemed brand new) with the reg plate " I AM 4T". Found out one day that it was a 40th birthday present.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2014 17:09

That's a bit rubbish isn't it Bike? out of date within the year. Grin

Tinselmouse · 15/12/2014 17:21

Marking my place on thus thread in case anyone makes reference to mine and DH's matching number plates. I love mine though, spells my name but doesn't look like a personalised plate unless you know my name. Makes my car look 7 years older than it is too, and I really don't care.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2014 17:24

As long as the PP owner is happy that's all that matters isn't it? I imagine there are lots of things people have that others don't see the point of but it's whatever makes you happy.

I think on MN it has been proved that you shouldn't care what others think time and time again.

Andrewofgg · 15/12/2014 17:25

My DM always said that if she had all the money in the world she would not have a number plate that was easy for a copper to remember!

Macloveswill · 15/12/2014 17:28

Private number plates are often used in the same way that people who wear too much gold or have fake columns on the front of their house....they think it's a status symbol...everyone else thinks they're a DICK. Anyone suggesting jealousy is involved probably have one of the above or similar (trying hard to think of others...erm...hot tub in the garden anyone?) Wink

JadziaSnax · 15/12/2014 17:30

Mine is a standard number plate that happens to have my initials on it, I spotted it when I was car shopping last year and the car was pretty much what I was looking for the reg number wasn't a deciding factor, oh no

I must admit, that would have given me a giggle OP.

Hurr1cane · 15/12/2014 17:30

My number plate, without giving away what it actually is, looks like it's saying 'The Fuck?'

I didn't have a choice as it is a motorbility car, but it does make me chuckle.

rememberingnothing · 15/12/2014 17:35

DH and I have matching plates that are our initials / short version of name and our company name. Hides just how old the vehicles are.

SomethingOnce · 15/12/2014 17:40

If I had money to burn, I'd be getting into philanthropy for a hobby.

JessesGirl · 15/12/2014 17:41

One of my friends and his wife have matching number plates with their first initial and surname on. I was actually seeing his brother a while back and did think that if we got married then it would be ok because all four of us have first names with different first letters so nobody would end up disappointed... HmmGrin

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2014 17:43

My Dad would be overjoyed if he was aware how much PPs annoy people. Grin

OhTheDrama · 15/12/2014 17:43

I used to live near a family like this. They were very flashy to begin with, they had a detached house which they kept adding extensions to until it looked ridiculous as they ended up totally running out of garden and space around the house. The parents had personalised plates for as long as I can remember but as their kids started passing their tests they got bought a car with a matching plate. Think 5 cars on drive all with similar plates. They were well known locally!

HicDraconis · 15/12/2014 17:52

Mac if you really think that a hot tub in the garden or a personalised plate makes someone a dick then I'd suggest you get back to school, you sound like a 13 year old trying to play at grown ups.

There's a fair few PP around here - 2QIK V8, HIS MGF & HER MGF (on red and green ones), QT4 MRS. I was vaguely thinking about getting GAS GRL (as in gas girl, being an anaesthetist - GAS DOC is already taken!) but then people might ask me to come & check their cylinders :)

Macloveswill · 15/12/2014 17:56

Defensive much hicdraconis? Biscuit

SomethingOnce · 15/12/2014 17:59

Oh, I dunno, Hic, personalised plates are quite dickish.

NancyRaygun · 15/12/2014 18:02

I was thinking this the other day as a friend has asked for personalised plates for Xmas from her wealthy parents and I literally cannot think why the hell she would want them, it's just not my thing at all and i would rather have something else - especially jewellery!

utopian99 · 15/12/2014 18:03

My mother has a short plate - three letters - which was passed to her by her grandfather who had a thing about short plates back when obviously most were fairly short anyway. Whenever I drive it the number of slightly dickish people who cross car parks and petrol station forecourts to say "do you know your number plate costs more than your car" never fails to amuse/annoy.

My grandmother has one, also passed on by her dad, that spells a VERY short word. Again, not paid for, and residing on a very unflash car. It will never be sold and I like to think of its continued presence on her car confusing the hell out of people who think all short plates are 'vanity' purchases.

CointreauVersial · 15/12/2014 18:06

The couple in the house opposite have matching plates. Both cars are the same colour too.

DDad has a special plate, but it isn't his initials, its just a very short and distinctive registration number. I think his father owned the car many years ago, and the plate just stuck around.

Thesimplethings · 15/12/2014 18:07

Best one I've seen was P155 0FF Grin
