To chuckle when I met a family with matching personalised number plates!

I certainly raised an eyebrow, and stifled an inner chuckle when I met this family...

OK so Mum, Dad, 20-something Son and Daughter have a car each, so 4 cars with 4 personalised number plates.

Say Mum is called Emma Sophie Lanchester, her number plate is:
FAM4 ESL

Say Dad is called Humphrey Charles Lanchester, his number plate is:
FAM4 HCL

Obviously these are not the real names and number plates but you get the idea! They all start with the same four letters, and end with the drivers initials.

Of course the parents have matching Range Rovers, and the two kids have an Audi each!

At first I was Hmm, but then I was Grin at the things some people will waste their money on! AIBU?

There's one on an Audi near us that reads as 'was his' I love that one!!

GlitzAndGigglesx · 15/12/2014 15:36

How would laughing make people snobs? Confused it's just cringeworthy and showing off. When the ceo of the company I work for comes to my work place we laugh at his which includes CEO on the reg plate. From his flash Mercedes you can see exactly who he is. Oh and the fact he doesn't park in the staff car park but in a secure area

Fallingovercliffs · 15/12/2014 15:38

I agree. Having a laugh at people spending money on pointless show offy stuff isn't snobby.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 15/12/2014 15:39

But it's probably because he's an arrogant stuck up twat that I think the same of all of them

Norfolknway · 15/12/2014 15:42

the best one I've ever seen was

WH03 BAD

shamelessly, I'd love that one Grin Grin

Chocolateteacake · 15/12/2014 15:43

We have a couple near us - something like '1 5exy' and 'k155 me'. There's also a pair with along the lines of 'to be' and 'not to be' (parked in 'the right order' in their drive.

The only ones that make me chuckle is when you know it spells put a word but you just can't work put what it is.

PinkSquash · 15/12/2014 15:47

B1G B0Y probably wasn't that big, unless it means his ego...

natwebb79 · 15/12/2014 15:48

I really don't get them either. Especially when numbers are supposed to look like letters and you spend ages trying to figure out what the frig they say. my friend's one ended up looking like it said 'shag'. He was gutted but amused when I pointed it out Grin

HowDoesThatWork · 15/12/2014 15:51

There is family round here who have the surname Pinter..

The car is P11NTA.

So far, so cool.

But, they also all have matching coats with PIINTA emblazoned on the back.

Makes me giggle whenever I see it.

LittleDonkeyLeftie · 15/12/2014 16:01

I come from a very MC family.

It's people who use phrases like "new money" I and my friends would snigger at, and yes, I do think it is snobby. I also think it makes the sniggerer sound really jealous. Obviously the people spending this money don't think it is pointless.

I wouldn't have a personalised plate myself as I am a Woman of Mystery and don't want to be recognised but I certainly wouldn't look down my nose at anyone who did.

It makes you sound rather unpleasant to be honest.

Am off - hiding thread Xmas Grin

You sound as if you're taking this a bit seriously LittleDonkey. And have no idea why you're hiding the thread, or making an announcement about it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 15/12/2014 16:08

I used to see a driver with HOT 541T (the 4 did look more like an H) on my way to work every now and then. Usually in a layby being spoken to by a police officer.

There's a family with matching ones in our street, although I wouldn't want one myself I think theirs look quite cool (they don't match totally, but are all personalised). I was quite impressed to see one that spelled out my first name and last initial the other day, wonder how much she paid for it.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 15/12/2014 16:10

I'm honestly not jealous in the slightest or unpleasant for that matter. I just think its an odd thing to spend money on but each to their own

Fallingovercliffs · 15/12/2014 16:12

She's flounced glitz. No idea why Confused

misskangaandroo2014 · 15/12/2014 16:13

Tacky as anything, 80's retro all the way! Their money so what can you do but snigger, but hopefully an ironic attempt at humour!

IShallCallYouSquishy · 15/12/2014 16:15

A car on our road has X21 MEN

I like to think they are into marvel etc.. Smile

Birdsgottafly · 15/12/2014 16:18

"Having a laugh at people spending money on pointless show offy stuff isn't snobby."

No, it shows that the person who needs to find an excuse to laugh at others, is sadly lacking.

In spending a similar amount on semi permanent eyebrows tomorrow.

Everyone on "Style & Beauty" spends money they don't need to, as do we all.

Can someone explain why/how making the decision to purchase any item, sums up the person, or makes them laughable.

I feel really sorry for those relatives of posters, who admit to laughing/sniggering at them. It must be horrendous being in such a unaccepting family.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2014 16:20

I think it's so that people don't know the age of the car isn't it? But then you get ones where the plate is about ten years older than the car must be, but I imagine the initials match. Confused And then numbers for letters are baffling.

DF and DB have them and seem very happy about it indeed so it's all good. Grin

KeepSmiling83 · 15/12/2014 16:21

I have got a personalised number plate. My mum and dad bought it for me for my 18th birthday (I'm in my 30s now). They wanted to get me something I would keep and as I don't wear jewellery they thought it was something that would last. I have had it on my Ford KA and Focus so not flashy cars and I think it was a really nice gift. Some of the plates I have seen are quite funny but I wouldn't find the ones you mention funny!

What makes the plates nice QT?

Shesparkles · 15/12/2014 16:34

One of my colleagues has a plate which is AB12 XXX. She naively thinks the X are kisses, despite almost everyone warning her that XXX usually means something else entirely

GlitzAndGigglesx · 15/12/2014 16:36

My relative knows we laugh and his is more for a joke. It was supposed to read 'got rid' after he divorced his wife
