Tinsel or baubles first?

This question has nearly ended my marriage today. Personally I think it's completely obvious. So AIBU to say OF COURSE you put the tinsel on first. Otherwise it obscures the baubles. Silly man.

Lights, tinsel, baubles, lametta.

Though I stopped doing lametta when I had small children and have never started again. I decided I like the tree better without it.

MagratGarlik · 07/12/2014 22:22

Lights first, then baubles, then tinsel and angel's hair over the lot. Star goes on the top last

iwouldgoouttonight · 07/12/2014 22:27

Lametta makes me feel all nostalgic for childhood Christmases. I want some on our tree now.

But back to the point, yes, lights, tinsel, baubles. Deffo.

Honeydragon · 07/12/2014 22:33

Lights, tinsel. Baubles. That way it's easier to put the crappy ornaments round the back.

lastnightIwenttoManderley · 07/12/2014 22:40

Lights then baubles. Definitely no tinsel.... Don't even get me started on lametta!

ClashCityRocker · 07/12/2014 22:57

What is lametta anyway?

LaurieFairyCake · 07/12/2014 22:57

No tinsel

Tis 'common'

OttiliaVonBCup · 07/12/2014 22:59

I just RTFT.

I'm the only one who goes baubles first.
I'm shocked.

HolgerDanske · 07/12/2014 23:00

Lametta makes me very nostalgic too. My grandparents always had it on their tree. And very pretty it was, too.

MrsBigginsPieShop · 07/12/2014 23:05

Then ornaments in descending size, working from bottom to top.
Just googled lametta. Forgot about that stuff. It reminds me of my GPs' trees. Awww. Xmas Smile

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/12/2014 23:21

Looks like I've been doing it wrong all these years - for me it's lights, baubles, tinsel

It doesn't cover the baubles up, either, but sort of goes around them to fill up any bare-looking bits. How else can you do it??!!!

teeththief · 07/12/2014 23:23

DH put the lights on first which was the right order...but he didn't do it properly so I then had to unwind it all, then put it all back on, then re-do the tinsel the kids had done, then re-do the baubles the kids/DH had done and THEN snow spray it Grin

They all tend to leave me to it after an hour or so

teeththief · 07/12/2014 23:24

Oh and angel hair! Don't forget the angel hair

Trickydecision · 07/12/2014 23:28

No, Ottilia, I'm with you on baubles and the rest of the decs first (but after the lights) then the tinsel, though I don't use it. But I do like a little twinkle of lametta, which is definitely put on last. I am a grandparent so it's allowed.

Cockadoodledooo · 07/12/2014 23:29

Strand of tinsel wrapped round the length of the trunk, then it's lights tinsel baubles here too.

HerbieRidesAgain · 07/12/2014 23:33

Lights (once done look at lights with squinty eyes/look through eyelashes or if you wear glasses take glasses off to ensure an even shimmer), THEN Baubles with best ones going at front, chocolate decs are on at same time, THEN tinsel, THEN lametta, THEN the angel hair, finally the Star on top
I couldn't do it any other way Smile

Waltonswatcher · 07/12/2014 23:51

Tinsel?
Are you deliberately trying to ruin your christmas ?

shadowfax07 · 08/12/2014 00:03

Lights, tinsel/beads (yes, I do both, shoot me) then baubles. Then I have to redo the baubles, they are never right first time.

Allalonenow · 08/12/2014 00:19

Lights then tinsel then baubles Xmas Grin

qazxc · 08/12/2014 00:19

By tinsel do you mean the bristly ropes or the individual strands (like lametta). If the first then it goes on before the baubles (and covers any patchy bits of the tree (we have a "real" tree) ), if the latter it goes on last.

Fluffyears · 08/12/2014 00:43

Lights first (miss the pre-lit tree) then tinsel, beads then baubles. Dphas banned tinsel as he hates it but I might sneak some on. Then lastly candy canes and chocolate decorations.

Tobyjugg · 08/12/2014 01:49

*I'm on DH's side. Lights, baubles and then tinsel draped over them. Maybe its gender related?

Can you explain yourself please, why would you put tinsel last?*

If it goes last it can be used as lashing to hold up any branches which are drooping because the baubles/lights are too heavy (we have some German hand carved ones baubles that weigh a bit) or to hid gaps where there's not enough bling.

Darkesteyes · 08/12/2014 01:57

I remember lametta Havent seen it anywhere for ages. It was quite popular around here in the 90s.

Bulbasaur · 08/12/2014 02:52

Baubles. Otherwise the baubles get tangled in the tinsel, it sticks to your fingers, and generally makes a mess all over the house since everyone is touching the tree and moving back to the ornament boxes.

I don't use tinsel actually it's not worth the tedious clean up to get it all off the tree on new years.

Ludoole · 08/12/2014 02:58

Noooooo tinsel!!
It just feels weird and belongs in a bin!
