To want a pair of secateurs for Christmas

Apparently I won't be bought them as they're not a present for me, they are a 'house' present. But considering there's only me to do the gardening, and it's something I can think that I could do with rather than wracking my brains for something I'm not particularly bothered about.....

(And yes I probably have spelt them incorrectly!)

I want an oven mitt and a new silicone whisk.

My favourite Christmas present was the Sarah Raven heart shaped trowel, personalised on the wooden handle by Dh.

It's the best tool ever. For weeding, planting, it's edges and point are sharp enough, use it for scooping - just, everything. Never out my hand.

Get some personalised secateurs?

All I would like is a pair that are both sharp and have cushioned handles - the things I use now are blunt and give me a horrible blister after 10 mins!

I always get a pair of cheap secateurs for every birthday and every christmas, because I'm forever losing them! There must be dozens of pairs somewhere in our garden/ compost heaps!

My ideal gift this year would be a vacuum cleaner...one I'd those cordless lightweight ones.

I'm getting secateurs for my mum this Christmas. Managed to pick up a nice Felco set during the Amazon Black Friday deals. She said she wanted a pair, so who am I to argue with that! If that's what you really want, then I would push it; better to get something you'll like and use than something silly.

About 25 years ago I got given a pair of Felco secateurs for Christmas. One of the best presents I've ever had.

They've been back for a new blade & servicing once (cost about £15).

Do get ones with red handles - much easier not to overlook them when gardening.

Great present. I asked for some for a birthday present years ago, and am still using them now. Thing is, if you went out and bought them as a normal run of the mill thing, you would probably pick cheapish ones, so as not to be too frivolous. Someone buying them as a gift will probably pick better, longer lasting ones.

My Felcos (in a leather holster) are one of my most treasured possessions! And they are definitely just for me

One year I'd put horse manure on my wish list. I grew veggies in a garden plot. Christmas morning there were 20 large bags of WR lining the path, each bag tied with a tinsel bow

Why not just buy the secateurs then from the housekeeping if they are a house thing (I am also a Felco fan but I suspect this is just garden snobbery, which I suffer from quite a bit) and specify something more for your own pleasure for your prezzie - RHS membership or a beautiful book of garden porn or something?

My christmas list also includes horse manure and/or bark chippings, timber to make raised beds and a strawberry cage and raspberry supports, an old metal desk and some old paving slabs to use as a table on the allotment. If I get expensive frilly undies I'll be gutted!

YANBU at all. My goodness I must have received dozens of secateurs over the years, and very delighted I was too. You can get very expensive ones that are extremely strong and robust, or cheaper ones that last about a year or so. I'm a very keen gardener, and anything like that would be a super choice for me!

It's bad luck to give knives / blades as gifts. If you get one you should give a silver coin in return.

I don't know what else to ask for Purplewithred, and as a PP said, I work along the lines of 'It's only for me' and I'd be taking more money than necessary away from fun things d and I could do.

My Mum was fanatical about not giving anything sharp as a present. You must buy it from her with a token coin as bluesbaby says.

You can't give or receive knifes, scissors or secateurs as present as according to my mother superstitious nonsense traditional lore they will cut a friendship.
You can however buy them, for a penny, and that negates the freindship severing effect.
I'm getting knives from dh this Christmas and will have to pay him for them, with a shiny penny.

I'm getting Veggiemesh for Xmas.

Mil used to buy me secateurs every Christmas. They were cheap, crap ones from Sainsburys etc. I eventually had 8 pairs (all crap).

I eventually bought myself a pair from here, and they are the best I've had.

Decent ones are worth spending a bit extra on, otherwise you end up with really achy hands and fingers.

You're not asking for secetures for Christmas; you're asking for Sarah Raven/Felco/Golden Gark secetures. I can buy myself a bar of chocolate but that doesn't mean I don't want some fancy choclates for Christmas.
