Sick of arguing with DH over this ( school related)

ds aged 8 teacher uses an e-cig in class.

Not only have my son noticed but many other children. I pick a few up from school due to parents working and not having enough time to get from work to the school so just wait on the yard.

From my point of view is that I am a smoker, ds sees me smoking ( I always go outside)

Dh doesn't want the teacher using an e-cig in school.

But e-cigs only emit steam, so it's not damaging the DC heath.

So I will hand it over to MN. Should DH complain or not.

Is teacher an asthmatic using an inhaler, maybe?

Either way, I'd check with her that you have the facts right before complaining.

youarekiddingme · 03/12/2014 13:49

My DS has ASD too. He said his cubs leader was smoking one in cubs.

I responded with Hmm until I witnessed it myself!

So not beyond the realms of possibility. More likely a pupil caught her doing it on the sly in the cupboard who told another student who told another...... The story got stretched and the DS believes it because it was said. My DS certainly can't tell fact from fiction - or pick put the believable buts from a story!

Topseyt · 03/12/2014 13:51

I love nasturtiums. Do chuck a few my way please.

If the teacher is vaping in front of her class then I think it is unprofessional behaviour.

My parents were both teachers and smokers. Neither ever once smoked in the classroom. They waited until break time (no bans in place in their day). Surely this teacher could do likewise with her e-cigarette?!

The caveat being to check first that it actually is an e-cig. Has she actually told them specifically that it is one?

No harm in querying it if you bear that in mind.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 03/12/2014 16:06

I don't care if you don't believe the post. I know this post is real.

DH and I went to the school today and the matter is being taken very seriously and is being looked into.

I am in the uk.

That's good to hear OP.

JustSpeakSense · 03/12/2014 16:43

No.

Bakeoffcakes · 03/12/2014 16:55

Good for you for reporting it OP.

I'm not sure why people don't believe a teacher would do this. My own dd said her domestic science teacher used to go and smoke in the store room, mind you that was about 8 years ago. I believed her and I'm sure he OP knows her own child.

Better start practising the 'sad face' for the Daily Mail sidebar of shame. Grin

Longtalljosie · 03/12/2014 18:41

Someone was vaping in my office the other day. As an ex smoker, I found it quite unpleasant/ upsetting, as I was getting a nicotine hit from the vapour and it was making me really want a cigarette for the first time in 15 years. In a way that second hand smoke doesn't, as it was just the nicotine, not the unpleasant smell.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 03/12/2014 19:34

A child in my class told another I was smoking in the room this week. All because when sitting with a group I put my hand to my face and then pulled it away which is what I do at times when focussing. I could imagine that this story could be taken home and debated on the internet (but my parents are more Bounty than Mumsnet)

Marylou2 · 03/12/2014 20:09

No way! Grin

Bumbiscuits · 03/12/2014 20:25

longtalljosie you got a nicotine hit from second hand vapour? Really?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 03/12/2014 22:13

Dear Piper, I'm very sorry I doubted you, I'm sure you're not really a Public Health troll like John Ashton or Martin McKee. If this is really going on then of course you should speak to the school. While ecigs pose no health risks to bystanders as far as we can tell from over 100 studies over 8 years, there is a time and a place and the classroom definitely isn't it. You might want to forward them ASH's excellent guide on the various things to consider when deciding on a vaping policy.

If anybody would like to know more about vaping, rather than just spouting what they 'reckon', there's an excellent FAQ here.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 03/12/2014 22:24

Longtalljosie - Someone was vaping in my office the other day. As an ex smoker, I found it quite unpleasant/ upsetting, as I was getting a nicotine hit from the vapour and it was making me really want a cigarette for the first time in 15 years. In a way that second hand smoke doesn't, as it was just the nicotine, not the unpleasant smell.

No, you really weren't getting a nicotine hit from 2nd hand vapour. It delivers about 1/10 of the nicotine you'd get from 2nd hand smoke and none of the other nasties. You'd have to be in a tiny unventilated room that had been heavily vaped in for several hours by several people and then lick the walls to get as much nicotine as you'd get from eating an aubergine curry.

You probably found it upsetting for psychological reasons - i.e. you saw the vapour and it looked a bit like smoke and it reminded you. Sorry you're still missing it, it never goes away for some people.

Roseformeplease · 03/12/2014 22:31

A fellow teacher uses one of these in the staffroom. I am a bit uncertain about it but the school is very relaxed about most things so most of us just ignore him. Probably better for everyone if he is no longer sitting chain smoking real fags in his car.

Arven · 03/12/2014 22:33

Wow. Wouldnt tolerate that.

Homepride1 · 03/12/2014 22:40

You have to be taking the piss!

I take it she must be giving up if on the e-cigs (good for her) bit I'm presume she didn't use to sit in class puffing away on a fag! This would 100% not be allowed and I don't care how good a teacher is this would not be acceptable!

I have no problem with teachers smoking and if they want to nip out in their lunch brake for one then knock yourself out!

I'm a smoker myself and love a fag but if this was happening in my child's school I would have something to say about it!

SistersOfPercy · 03/12/2014 22:50

I banned ds from smoking his in our house, not sure what liquid he had in it but the smell was boggin.
As for smoking in class, not on at all.

anothernumberone · 03/12/2014 23:06

OP I have had many (adult) students using ecigs. I have banned them from lectures but people are only getting to grips with what is appropriate usage now. Heck they are being advertised in a manner we thought died out with smoking advertising. Even still it is shocking that a primary school teacher would use one in class what was he/she thinking.

SistersOfPercy · 03/12/2014 23:10

Have to say I was a bit Shock to see then advertised in the break for I'm a celebrity, especially the attractive woman blowing out her smoke. It just felt wrong and for me went back to the days when advertisers tried to glamourise smoking.

As I'm assuming this teacher didn't spark up mid lesson before ecigs it's safe to assume she's capable of actually waiting until she's away from the children to use it.

partialderivative · 04/12/2014 04:35

I'm sorry if I am being really dense here. But why are people so upset about a teacher using one of these things?

I thought the reason smoking was banned was because of health risks, if these risks do not exist...

If people say it is inappropriate, why is it inappropriate?

Having read the links provided by pp's I feel the need to be convinced.
