And if so, can you explain why?

I'm fascinated by the whole concept.

Educate me.

This sofa is also still for sale in dfs for £1495 but why buy it at that price? My vice is foriegn holidays so would rather go away 2/3 times a year.

RJnomore · 03/12/2014 08:27

And sky arts?

elQuintoConyo · 03/12/2014 08:36

Not RTFT (who has?) but I don't think big TVs are common.

I think asking if they are and talking about them negatively are common.

So there.

I wouldn't say they were common, we have a 32" LCD which is quite a few years old and cost about £800 then, how they have decreased in price. When it wears out we will probably buy a bit bigger one 37-40", any bigger won't fit our lounge space. I won't buy a big one for the sake of it though, ours is still good. If our lounge was bigger we would have a bigger telly.

A big telly is quite cheap nowadays though, I think in the past they were seen as a bit of a status thing as they cost so much but a big one could just be a supermarket cheapie fought over in Tesco or Asda for £200-300

I remember years ago watching a comedian at a friend's house. His TV was considered (at the time) to be massive. The comedian (I can't think who it was - possibly the floppy haired chinese looking chap) was doing a skit on working class and middle class, and how you can tell what you are. The acid test apparently was: "If your TV is too big for your house, then you're working class" My firend's wife (who in fairness had already commented on the ridiculousness of the TV) went bright red. I nearly choked laughing.

We have a 40'' tv which I now struggle to see becasue we've moved to a bigger house (it's actually the sky banner that I struggle with). We are going to get a 60" smart tv, but to be honest, it's for the family room. Even though I don't particularly think they're "common" in the class sense, I wouldn't personally want one front and centre in the lounge.

raltheraffe · 03/12/2014 10:50

Malice, I do not understand why she would go red. Is working class considered something bad, something to be ashamed of? Are middle class people considered in some way superior?
I could not give a toss whether I am working class, middle class or Royalty. I think the whole definition of class is a bit last century and people need to move on.

MaliceInWonderland78 · 03/12/2014 11:12

I think she went red because of the context. I should point out that we're all "working class" We were sat in my friends ex-council house and we (at the time) lived in an ex-council house.

It's not something that would have been an issue otherwise.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 03/12/2014 11:27

Who mentioned a three piece suite? Were you being ironic, 'cause that's way more common than a big telly Grin

Number3cometome · 03/12/2014 11:29

I'm having a deja vu - Didn't you post yesterday about your BIL being a knob about your massive TV?

ouryve · 03/12/2014 11:34

I couldn't care less, so long as no one tries to force me to have one in my house. I can't say that Peppa Pig looks any better on a 60" screen than our 32".

Though we did have a snigger when someone bought a massive one from Currys, the other day, then wheeled it back in when they couldn't fit it in their car :o Muppet.

ouryve · 03/12/2014 11:47

I want this for my 11' by 13' living room area. It's only worth slightly more than half the value of my house.

Not too tacky, is it?

Yes Number3, that's why it's a TAAT.

Loadsa people on that thread stating that big tellies = bit common.

DoraGora · 03/12/2014 12:25

They're pretty common.

Number3cometome · 03/12/2014 12:33

Sorry what does TAAT mean? [embarrassed]

Big tellies are common, but they don't make you common if that makes sense.

(Mine is only 42 inches, that's not massive)

I never understood why people bothered with TVs and didn't own one until I had dd and had to stay in every night while too sleep deprived to do anything that required brain function. Now I understand, there's so many good shows!!! If you're watching something, it looks much better on a nice, big, high def flat screen. Most people have them now.

I like big televisions, I don't judge people whose TVs are too big for their rooms, I don't have to live there. I do judge TVs in bedrooms a little. That's just addicted. As for TVs in toddlers rooms, I have to admit my first thought was is it to keep them entertained while the parents get drunk/shoot up on heroin? I'm sure that's not the case but I do think it indicates an extremely TV centric household and I don't think that's a good thing.

The idea of homes where there is no bedding/toys/furniture/food but a sixty inch flat screen hung up on the wall sounds bizarre. Really???

I must admit I don't like the idea of tvs in bedrooms, especially for young children, but that's never been my first thought!
