And if so, can you explain why?

I'm fascinated by the whole concept.

Educate me.

Vulgar beyond belief (and they'll stay that way until we've saved up for ours).

MrsBertMacklin · 02/12/2014 22:38

Not common, but a TV that's too big for the room looks daft (same as an overly large sofa or anything else would).

I'd love a 48" screen TV for films and David Attenborough, but if I do a really big star jump I can touch both sides of my siting room, so not happening.

slithytove · 02/12/2014 22:41

We have a 50inch in the living room, DVDs and not much else. It's brilliant for gaming and watching footie.

42 inch in bedroom for Netflix, we both have terrible eyesight so it really helps as we also use subtitles.

I suppose people would judge but I also have thousands of books which I read in bed or the bath, which aren't on show.

I don't get the thing about the telly being the most expensive thing in the room either, surely the sofa costs more?

PhaedraIsMyName · 02/12/2014 22:42

Yes.

Oldraver · 02/12/2014 22:44

I dont think they are 'common', I just dont like great huge tv's, especially as others have said, tv's that are over sized for the room.

We have a 32" which was a jump up from the previous 26" and I thought I would never want a bigger one. I'm happy with the one we have but now realise a 42" wouldn't of looked too bad. The little charts say we should have a 60" but think that would be too much for me.

I dont like a tv that fills my sight, it makes me a bit fuzzy. We are also more into music and have just bought ourselves to a new amplifier and speakers, so the tv is not the most expensive thing by a long chalk. My 37 year old amp gave up last year, so this was my treat

CalamitouslyWrong · 02/12/2014 22:45

I have no idea what people have against decent tvs.

We have friends who have a teeny tiny tv in the corner of their huge living room. You'd need binoculars to watch it from the sofa. I know for a fact that they think they're superior to people who have a big tv and who can watch their tv properly. The sense of superiority might make some sort of sense if they only watched bbc4 documentaries on it or something, but they watch xfactor and IACGMOOH on it. Confused

I don't care for tvs about fireplaces, but only because it provides a hideous viewing angle. Our tv is at comfortable eye height. It's only 37", which probably doesn't even count as massive any more. But, if other people like looking up at their tv, why would I care?

I do find the 'focal point of the room' argument bizarre. No one ever pays much attention to the so-called focal points. How often do you sit an admire your fireplace for hours?

CalamitouslyWrong · 02/12/2014 22:46

DH wants to get a bigger tv, but I've vetoed it on the basis that anything bigger wouldn't fit in the alcove the tv lives in.

MrsBertMacklin · 02/12/2014 22:48

So glad Friends is coming to Netflix.

The thing that strikes me most about this thread isn't so much the size of the tellies as the size of the homes Shock. Do you all live in Buck House? Hmm
We live in a 1930s terrace, sitting room is approx 12 x 14 into a bay window with a biggish fireplace and wide chimney breast. As a result we have the TV in the gap on one side of the fireplace and a big bookcase on the other. The TV is 26 in and there simply isn't room for anything bigger imo.

When we go to BiL's and see their telly which is off the scale huge, I'm initially Shock but after a couple of hours slumped in front of it on Boxing Day I tend to think ours is a bit on the small side and get short-lived telly envy.

RJnomore · 02/12/2014 22:52

How on earth can your tv cost more than your sofa?

Anyway I wouldn't have a huge tv, ours is 37 inch and QUITE big enough, I don't like them dominating the room,

Don't care what anyone else wants to put on their walls though.

DH and I are disagreeing about this currently - I say when this tv dies (9yo, plasma) nothing bigger is going in that corner but he's being all size does matter! Grin

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 02/12/2014 23:00

RJ we bought a perfectly nice leather sofa from ikea the other day for £395.

Our TV is also a 9 YO plasma that cost over £1k Shock because that was how much they were then.

I know they cost a lot less now, but there are plenty that are over £395.

slithytove · 02/12/2014 23:00

This is my living room. So kind of split into two.

RJnomore · 02/12/2014 23:05

I suppose there's part of me that thinks a tv is a luxury item and a sofa is an essential - so if I was biying both now, I'd invest in the sofa...

We just bought a new leather sofa as well btw. Fingers crossed the tv holds out for a bit longer Grin

TV about 3.5 foot, eyes about 8 inches away. Not wall mounted. It works for us. Don't go out a lot so most evenings are spent watching films and chatting once the kids are in bed.

MollyBdenum · 02/12/2014 23:20

My house is small, so the living room is for watching TV, but also using the computer, reading, listening to music or radio programmes, chatting, knitting, making phone or Skype calls, doing exercises...It's the main playing space for the children. I spend maybe 4 hours a week watching TV, and of that time, probably around half is actually iPlayer on the computer monitor. DP watches a lot more than I do, but television watching isn't in any way the main use of the room.

We have an old CRT TV and I don't want to replace it with anything very big when it stops working. I'll probably go for a 32" smart TV which seems to cost a bit under£300 at the moment.

I've just checked Debretts for clarification on this, and apparently it is not common to have a large telly, as long as you have all the other buttons on the remote control removed, so you can only watch BBC One and Two.

:)

Bulbasaur · 03/12/2014 01:31

I don't see what's so silly about having a huge TV. Confused

Even cheap furniture is more expensive that a big flat screen.

sunflower49 · 03/12/2014 01:41

I sort of get what somebody said earlier about a massive tv meaning It's very important, and the focus of the room BUT, that's relative to the size of the room.

I very seldom watch TV. In fact, ours broke a couple of months ago and we still haven't had it fixed nor bought a new one, we can afford it but neither of us are that bothered. But I can see why on the odd occasion I do want to watch TV, It's better on a larger screen. So if I want a TV, I want a biggish one.

I suppose they're 'common' in that they seem to be the 'thing' everyone has now and everyone wants one and I find that sort of attitude a bit common.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 03/12/2014 01:42

We don't have a big telly. Ours is actually very small.

And for anyone wondering if having a big telly is similar to having a big flash car... Yes, yes it is :) lucky me

pinkorange · 03/12/2014 04:55

We have a 3 year old dfs corner sofa I bought for £60. I got it from someone who needed a quick sale as moving abroad. I do this with all my furniture
