And if so, can you explain why?

I'm fascinated by the whole concept.

Educate me.

I don't like televisions which are too big for the room they are in

I think I am a bit judgy about it...unfortunately for me we have two televisions in our house both of which are too big for the rooms they are in

So that makes me a hypocrite (although DH wanted them, he quite often sits there going "do you remember when we had the portable tv...")

hazeyjane · 02/12/2014 18:30

No

hmc · 02/12/2014 18:32

No.

LittleBearPad · 02/12/2014 18:32

He must have a big bedroom to cope with such a big TV.

raltheraffe · 02/12/2014 18:32

"I don't like televisions which are too big for the room they are in"

As long as you can get it in and still close the door it aint too big!

MadameOvary · 02/12/2014 18:33

Dammit.
I thought I invented the RAF thing. No-one I know had heard of it, they thought it was funny and it made me feel all witty and original.

I have a tiny telly btw. You can easily miss it. DP OTOH wants a 4K as he's a film buff. I'm meh about them tbh.

Raitheraffe your 3 yr old DS has a 50 inch plasma? Is that a typo??

NotYouNaanBread · 02/12/2014 18:34

Caitlin Moran got quite pissed off at the "poor people shouldn't have 52 inch tellies" line, as she takes the position that if you live in a shitty council estate with teens sniffing glue on the corner and no money to pay for activities for your children, a mahoosive telly will encourage them to stay in and it becomes a sort of safe magnet for the family.

Not sure about the validity of this though. I'm not doubting her - I just mean I don't know for myself if she's right.

Fooshufflewickbannanapants · 02/12/2014 18:34

We must be very common then as we have a projector that fills the whole wall Shock

sassytheFIRST · 02/12/2014 18:34

Did someone say they have a 60ft living room?? Really?? Where do they live? Downtown abbey? Ours is a good size at 20ft x 14ft. Oh and our telly is 42" - too big for me but ok in the room.

lecherslady · 02/12/2014 18:39

I have to admit I hate it. Not sure I'd use the word common though. I just think huge TVs (esp wall mounted, and definitely those wall mounted over the fireplace) look a bit naff. But that's just personal taste.

That said, I have a huge wall mounted tv in our living room. I wasn't allowed a say when DH chose the tv (despite the fact I paid for it!) because my reasons for choosing were invalid (he may have a point there - my criteria was the aesthetics of the screen and the remote control!) whereas DH was all into screen resolution etc. (we have a big plasma TV).

However, like a previous poster I console myself in the fact that I have several hundred books in the living room to counteract it Grin.

raltheraffe · 02/12/2014 18:39

4K 50 inch plasma Madame, don't forget the 4K bit, it is brand new technology

raltheraffe · 02/12/2014 18:41

It might have been you Madame who said I was RAF. It was on the we have just set off a massive display firework and the neighbours are calling us nobheads thread.

CoolStoryBro · 02/12/2014 18:42

The only problem I have with big tvs is if you're bashing the shit out of each other in Walmart to get a cheap one.

MadameOvary · 02/12/2014 18:46

It most certainly was NOT me.
Dammit. Link fail.

ElkTheory · 02/12/2014 18:46

We don't have a big TV because we don't want one. I also dislike the trend of hanging TVs above the fireplace. I just don't care for how it looks.

But "common"? The thought never entered my mind. I'm not English so that may account it. Smile

spidey66 · 02/12/2014 18:51

My husband's best mate has a huge telly. I've not seen it and I'm not hot on sizes, but he said it's the size of those big screens pubs have when there's a huge footie match on. He lives in a small flat, and has to put it in the kichen in order he can watch it from the living room. Confused. If you have a big living room-fine, otherwise I can't see the point.

usualsuspect333 · 02/12/2014 18:52

People who think all council estates are shitty and full of poor people with glue sniffers on every corner need to keep their thoughts to themselves.

As for big TVs being common? Behave.

MillionairesShortbread · 02/12/2014 18:54

I thought ours was huge (possibly too dominating). Its 26", My husband has for ages been saying its small!

Its on the wall above where the fireplace would be, but its a modern house so no fireplace. Not too sure whereelse it could go.

catwithflowers · 02/12/2014 18:58

fourwoodenchairs · 02/12/2014 18:58

What qualifies you to be common?

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 02/12/2014 19:01

MrsKoala

I have fridge envy!

LennyCrabsticks · 02/12/2014 19:02

I think I am possibly the epitome of naff.

Big telly
Brown leather sofa
Artist portrait from our wedding day on the wall.
Inspirational word art on the sideboard.
Chandelier type lights
Tinsel on the huge Christmas tree.

Winning.

When I was growing up the TV was on all the time. I don't want that for my kids. However, we are lucky to live in a house that has a basement so we can put our (40 something inch TV) down there. It totally dominates the room, though, and would drive me mad if it was up here on the main floor.

But common? I don't know. Isn't it just the reality of space (and it's hard to buy a small TV these days!)...
