To think that ASDA shouldn't be selling Guardians of the Galaxy clothes for 2-3 year olds?

I went to ASDA at the weekend and was quite taken aback to see that they are selling Guardians of the Galaxy t-shirts for two year olds. I also saw pyjamas in age 4-5. The film is rated a 12 certificate so why on earth are ASDA promoting the film to young children?

You also get spideman and batma pjs and they are a 12.

No big deal, some parents let their children watch them. My son watches Spider-Man and batman so has the pjs too.

YABU although it's a 12 they ate marketing at younger. There is or will be GOG lego sets as well as the usual pencil cases etc

it was a 12A at the pictures so could be watched by younger children if they had an adult with them

It's a great film! If my kids were that age I would totally buy them GOTG stuff.

So there's your answer. It's not marketing the film to the kids - it's targeting the adult fans that buy clothes for kids...

My six year old watched it with myself and her sisters aged 10 and 12 on Sat ... No one died - she enjoyed it

12a means under 12s need an adult with them not that they can't see it

When your children are young, most of their clothes are a reflection of your own taste with the odd bit of whichever Cbeebies character they like.

Ds and dd3 have clothes with characters on which is what dh likes. I'm more bothered about the inappropriate clothes for girls.

Well i think it's odd to buy the clothes for your child if they've never seen the film and don't know the characters. Looking on commonsensemedia here www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/guardians-of-the-galaxy and at the language/violence in it, I wouldn't let my 8 year old watch it let alone a 2-3 year old.

I think these clothes are more aimed for the parents. I've got a vest with 'mummy's little Vulcan' on it for my five month old. Not sure he knows about mr Spock yet!

Same thing happened with The Hulk. They market all the stuff (slippers, lunch boxes, stationary) towards Primary school children, but the film is a 12.

It came out in 2003 when DS1 was 4 and he was attracted towards the stuff.

Grin Yes. But not all comics have historically been for children, those that were were aimed at specific ages, and those that started off as 'U-cert' now have versions and storylines aimed at adult readers.

The fact that something is from a comic does not automatically mean it's OK for kids of any age. There was a huge fuss even way back in the 1950s about the level of sex and violence in comics for older kids.

So the GOTG films may be based on comics, but that doesn't mean the comic or the film contains nothing that might be too old or inappropriate for a 5-year-old. That comes down to the parent's judgement.

I've not got a strong opinion on whether ASDA should be selling the costumes, but don't think you can argue for it by saying that they're from comics so it's all fine for little kids.

I agree with you, OP......except I think you've kind of got it the wrong way round. I think that films like GOTG and the Turtles should be toned down a little to get them a PG rating. Then they could go ahead and market away to kids and you and I would be happy.

A 12a rating means there are things in the film that are not considered suitable for under 12s. When it comes out on DVD it will be a 12. It doesn't exactly mean it's fine to take little kids as long as a parent is there.

But kids clothes aren't marketed to kids. How often do you see adverts on kids channels for clothes?

The characters appear in the spiderman/avengers cartoons that are on the kids channel. They tone them down to age appropriate for that so younger children can still know the characters without seeing the films.

Spiderman even had Deadpool Shock who is definitely not for children .

At the end of the day no matter who the merchandise is aimed at-if they can make money selling it they will!
