......and therefore way too early to be putting up Christmas trees and decorations? My bloody facebook feed is full of the things.

What happened to 12 days before / 12 days after? Am I way out of touch?

Well it is the start of Advent. (any excuse) Ours is up, and all the decorations too. The cats are already eyeing the tree speculatively. ("Hmm.. I seem to remember climbing up that green thing last year and pinging those pretty round things onto the floor...") I can't get enough of Crimbo. Dh is the same. Two big babies.

noddyholder · 30/11/2014 18:40

This is such an odd thing to get bothered about. It s a bit snobby Hyacinth Bucket-y I love xmas decs

BooDidIScareYou · 30/11/2014 18:55

I now feel spectacularly ignorant as I had no idea there was even such a thing as Advent Sunday! Obvs I'm familiar with advent calendars but had never given any thought as to what the word means. I'm blaming my parents....

Before I had the DCs, I would have said YANBU, ours went up on the 24th. But now...

Well, I still think you have a point, but the DCs love it all so we'll put ours up the week before they break up. A good compromise, I think.Grin

Friends of ours have done it all today but the husband is about to go into hospital for quite a major operation, so they can be forgiven.Wink

RaisingMen · 30/11/2014 19:25

I will never understand why this bothers people so much, it isn't harming anyone and if you don't want your decs up yet, don't put them up. There's no law that says they have to go up on a certain day. Mine have gone up today, and will be taken down the day after Boxing Day - I can't bare them up for 12 days after Christmas.

MrsHathaway · 30/11/2014 19:26

Tbh you have to be pretty observant as a Christian to set store by the precise liturgical calendar.

I offer Advent to Epiphany to give you solace - assume that every overexcited person has put up their Advent decorations appropriately.

I like decorating gradually through Advent - our door wreath and holly hanging basket things are up and the LED reindeer on the garage roof, ahem, which DH got to excite the DC but the tree won't follow for a week or two, the inevitable handmade offerings come home from toddler group / preschool / nursery and go up when they do, and so on. Advent as preparation for Christmas, you see.

TurnOverTheTv · 30/11/2014 19:33

But it's advent! They've bloody gone up :-)

Brummiegirl15 · 30/11/2014 20:21

I'm with you op. Way way too early. We always do ours mid December - otherwise it's overkill.

So ours will be up Saturday 13th

DramaAlpaca · 30/11/2014 20:26

I'm with you too, OP. Much too early. Mine will go up about a week before Christmas, maybe as late as Saturday 20th, and come down on 5th or 6th January.

ovaltine · 30/11/2014 20:31

I agree, too early for trees! It's weeks away! So OTT. Friends used to put their up Xmas eve. I liked that tradition.

Tobyjugg · 30/11/2014 20:35

DW refused point blank to go and get tree tomorrow. Next weekend is early enough for her us.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 30/11/2014 20:42

Each to their own. We put ours up very late compared to some, but don't mind if others put theirs up early. I saw some pretty trees in windows as I was walking back from town after dark yesterday.

DD1 wants to decorate the tree when she's back from uni so that won't be going up until the 21st. It's a real growing one so it doesn't like being inside for too long anyway.

Will probably put up a few other things earlier and the cards get hung up as they arrive.

meglet · 30/11/2014 20:47

Yanbu.

Ours will go up on the 17th and come down on NYE.

I've got the Xmas mugs, cups and books out of the loft though. But they don't take up any space. The tree gets in the way.

ILoveSimonCowell · 30/11/2014 20:57

Decorations (most of them) went up on Friday. Tree going up tomorrow. The DC open advent calendars tomorrow... has to look festive! Though I do take it ALL DOWN a couple of days after Christmas!

ConferencePear · 30/11/2014 21:19

I'm with Mrs Hathaway in theory. In practice I've usually got so much to do on Christmas Eve that I put them up on 23 and take them down on Twelfth Night.

Poolomoomon · 30/11/2014 21:56

Advent Sunday today so yabu. Today is officially the first day it's acceptable and NO ONE should whinge. It's november, yes it's the last bloody day of November and in a few short hours it will be DECEMBER. I imagine a lot of people put theirs up on the first of December but as today is the weekend it was more convenient for them. I like to get my money's worth out of the decorations personally so yes, we put ours up today and do so every year. Wouldn't put them up any earlier because I do think it's slightly bonkers to do so but to each their own, doesn't affect me.

WorraLiberty · 30/11/2014 21:59

My decs went up yesterday as it's the nearest weekend to Dec 1st.

A couple of my neighbours have had theirs up for 2 weeks already and I do find that too early.

But it makes them happy.

Taffeta · 30/11/2014 21:59

We put the outdoor lights on, as they've been up all year and we wanted to check they still worked.

DD has a little tree up in her room, we will get ours in a few weeks.

HedgehogsDontBite · 30/11/2014 22:01

I'm a bit traumatised here with your assertion that they have to be down by 5/1. I thought it was by the 6/1. Have I been getting this wrong for the past 20 years and is this why I have had endless misfortune (remembers mothers tales of goblins and bad stuff if anything was left up).

Jelliebabe2 · 30/11/2014 22:44

God my neighbours put theirs up 2 weeks ago... Gaaaaah!

306235388 · 30/11/2014 22:47

I agree but ours is up because I was outvoted and the kids love it so meh.

monkeymamma · 30/11/2014 22:53

Mine is halfway up :-) I'll finish it tomorrow. Dc2 due on Tuesday so I want everything to be ready in case I'm not up to it later in December! I'd normally wait but think we have a good reason to be a bit early this year (also I realise in future years we'll have to wait until after dc2's birthday to decorate... And that could be as late as 16th Dec I assume!

smokinggnu · 30/11/2014 22:57

Christmas decorations go up Christmas Eve (clue is the name they are decorations for Christmas). Anything before that is just a decoration Wink

LST · 30/11/2014 22:58

Mine will go up sometime this week. And it will be packed up again at the latest nye.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 30/11/2014 23:06

I have got my tree up, did it today.

We can only do it on the weekend as a family. Next weekend I'm away for the weekend for a weeding. The following weekend is my birthday. So if I left it it would be 22nd and I'm out for Black Friday. So that's a no go for the following day.

Unfortunately due to a very busy schedule and work patterns, it was today or not at all.
