"DD, what would you like for Christmas?"

"The big Frozen castle Mummy. It's all I've ever wished for!"

Repeat x 100

So Mummy looks at the big Frozen castle.

Why in the name of all things holy does this big plastic box cost over £100???? It looks like it is worth about £20. On a good day.

Apparently it is the only toy she has ever wanted (lie). But I can't get anything else out of her that she might like. I tried introducing the smaller version - £40 and still an obscene price - but apparently it doesn't have a sofa?!?!?

Has anyone bought this piece of crap? Thoughts?

Chipped DH impulse-bought those Animators dolls for our 2.5yo Christmas. I don't think there was any need to have two dolls, and extra clothes and the mini Olaf... But the dolls are beautiful. I love how they actually look like toddlers in the face and body. I hope she likes it!

(But that castle - oh my!)

BathshebaDarkstone · 29/11/2014 06:05

Oh thank fuck DD only asked for the Elsa dress! She wanted the Ana dress but they didn't have her size. SadDC know that I only have a £20 budget per DC. Smile

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/11/2014 06:20

It's $50 in Canada so 25 quid. Obviously the market takes what it takes.

Poolomoomon · 29/11/2014 06:28

Am I the only one who didn't even think Frozen was that good? Appreciate I'm not the target audience Grin but all the same... Went to see it last Christmas expecting a Christmassy movie and it just isn't. It was alright, I didn't not like it but there's been a million times better movies from Disney.

But obviously the worlds children disagree and the bloody thing has EXPLODED. It's everywhere. For an average disney film I just find it insane. Toy story I understood but this is just Shock.

The castle could have been done sooo much better. That one is awful and a total rip off, not even worth £25 IMO. Yanbu, I wouldn't get it either. Frozen will die out soon I'm sure (I hope).

369thegoosedrankwine · 29/11/2014 07:03

Pooloo I didn't really get it either. I quite like the songs but it is no Lion King.

Toy is a complete rip off, it wouldn't work to scale with those dolls either, they would be like big clumpy Sindys stomping around the Barbie house.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 29/11/2014 07:34

It is overpriced tat.
But if you can afford it, and there isnt an alternative on her list (rather than something you would rather she has, that in fact she wont enjoy) I say get it. She will love it. Thats the trouble with letting our kids watch this stuff and Nick Jnr it means they make choices that we dont always like.

TheStick · 29/11/2014 07:42

Im afraid i gave in an bought it for my daughters birthday. it was her birthday on thursday and we're setting it up for her tonight so i'll post a picture of the crapness. i know its going to be shit but she had her heart set on it ( even though she's not even opened it yet and played with gooey louie almost constantly)

Hulababy · 29/11/2014 07:46

When dd was smaller and she had expressly wanted it, and it was within our normal budget, I'd have got it. Yes - to an adult eye - it's plastic tat. To a young child who loves the film ...

Been there with the nice wooden dolls house etc. oh yes, they look so much nice and so better in our homes. But ime the children just don't play with them or covet them in the same way.

I'd have bought it and I know that back then dd would have loved it and would have played with it.

Hulababy · 29/11/2014 07:48

Chippednailvarnish

Saw those dolls in the shop yesterday. Didn't see the price. But they do look lovely. 12y dd spotted them and her and her friend both said they were lovely. I really like the clothes dolly things for spare outfits.

Doobledootch · 29/11/2014 07:50

Fuck me that's expensive I wouldn't buy it on the principle that it's so over priced. £25 in Canada Shock

SuchSweetSorrow · 29/11/2014 07:55

I knew this would be one of the Frozen castles when I saw the thread title! My daughter wanted the £45 one which is so basic it's unbelievable. Tiny Elsa and Olaf figures, basic plastic castle with a few lights and that's about it. There is also a £20ish one made of cardboard!

I don't mind paying more for good quality toys such as lego, play mobil etc but they are really having a laugh with these Frozen sets!

Loveleopardprint · 29/11/2014 07:55

She is going to be on a nostalgic Christmas thread in twenty years time reminiscing about the Christmas she got/didn't get the Frozen castle! Wink

MidniteScribbler · 29/11/2014 07:58

Santa doesn't get told what to buy around here. He is Santa, he knows what would be the best gift for you. Asking for gifts is rude and poor etiquette. (My child will never get married with a wishing well with all this groundwork I am laying ;) )

TheStick · 29/11/2014 08:02

loveleopard i still remember the year i got a green girls bike when i had my heart set on a bmxHmm

GuiltyAsAGirlCanBe · 29/11/2014 08:05

My dd wants the doc mcstuffin's check up centre, a similarly priced piece of plastic cack that will take up loads of room and does nothing.

Dd has her heart set on it though. Disney is laughing all the way to the bank at Xmas. :(

KnackeredMuchly · 29/11/2014 08:08

Asking for gifts isn't rude - not when you're not able to buy anything or take yourself shopping Confused

WeirdCatLady · 29/11/2014 08:17

I think if you can afford it and it is the only thing she is asking for then I would get it.

No she doesn't need it
No her world won't fall, apart if she doesn't get it
Yes it is overpriced tat

But wouldn't you rather buy her overpriced tat something that she actually wants rather than something that you consider to be a better buy?

samithesausage · 29/11/2014 08:31

Is there anyway you and dd could make a frozen castle together with paints and cardboard boxes? (I remember the cardboard rooms made by blue peter yonks ago).
Much more fun, and gives her something to do in the holidays.

letsplaynice · 29/11/2014 10:39

B&m have a cardboard one with cardboard characters£15 I think

SilverDragonfly1 · 29/11/2014 10:58

MyCatLovesMeSometimes The Melissa and Doug castle is great. We have one at toddler group, donated by a very generous parent, and it still looks good after months of heavy use. There are never fewer than two children playing with it at any time. Sadly, the Princess has gone missing, but the other figures are still in great condition despite being played with so much and occasionally chewed.

TSSDNCOP · 29/11/2014 11:07

OP thank you. That puts the previously unbeaten for shit value fireman Sam fire station into perspective after 4 years.

Pooloo I'm with you. I was hoping for an Arthur Christmas affair. Frozen blew.

MyCatLovesMeSometimes · 29/11/2014 11:16

Thanks SilverDragonfly1 DH has now cheated and shown the Melissa and Doug castle he likes to DD (& the playmobil) she now loves the castle especially that it comes with a dungeon!

I love Melissa and Doug toys myself and tend to give them as birthday gifts at the moment as they are lovely.

InAllFairness · 29/11/2014 11:35

That is a lot of £££ for very little. Not sure how you will get around it though. Playmobile have some fairy castles but not the same I guess unless you can get small frozen figures to use with it. That what I'd look into doing. Improvise. My DD mixes and matches a whole load of items. She wants every other thing she sees on the adverts so I smile and nod and go yeah yeah, if you ask me for one more thing from an advert I'm just going to keep the TV off. As it is she will scream the street down when she sees the sylvanian families bargains I have got for her.

InAllFairness · 29/11/2014 11:38

Tbh this is the the price of a hudl tablet which I would rather buy her if she doesn't have one already.
