AIBU? DD 14 made fun of when in pain

My DD is 14 and recently went to stay with my sister and her daughter for a weekend whilst I was on holiday with DH. DD has always suffered with very painful periods and many times I've heard her crying out on the bathroom floor in pain.

She came on unexpectedly whilst staying with my sister and she said she was in agony and thought she was dying, felt sick, going hot and cold feeling faint etc and doubled over and moaning in pain. Meanwhile, my sister and her daughter said she was being a drama queen and mocking her, taking the piss. She asked for painkillers (feminax) and she got her cheap paracetamol which obviously don't touch the pain.

When I went to pick DD up, my sister told me that my daughter would be a brilliant actress and told me that she came on and was being a proper 'drama queen'.

Am I right to be pissed off?

Poor thing, I remember having some similar at her age - and into my twenties - and paracetamol didn't touch it. Mefanamic acid helped, but to work best I was told to take it several days before I was due on, and they were too irregular when I was younger so I'd end up taking too many. I definitely had appalling cramps, pain right down to my knees, and occasions where I was almost vomiting. Early stage labour was very similar. Just because your sister has been lucky enough not to suffer with her periods doesn't mean her niece is a drama queen.

My periods are A LOT better now - after having children, though obviously that's not a help right now. Best way is ibuprofen and paracetamol taken alternately, and possibly the pill might help her?

YANBU.

I have a friend with endometriosis (sp) and PCOS and her periods are hell on earth. Has your DD been checked by a GP for any underlying issues?

How revolting of your sister, your DD's AUNT, to laugh a child in pain. Perhaps next time your sister stubs her toe or gets a headache or similar you should laugh and then say "Oh sorry, I just thought you were being a drama queen"

Your poor DD. Your sister was really awful to her. She may never have suffered a lot of period pain but she should know that it's different for everyone. Even my 10 year old dd knows that....

I agree that you should take her to the doctors. Regarding pain relief, what works for one person doesn't work so well for others. It's probably best to start with ibuprofen (of the NSAIDs it's the least likely to cause side effects) and see if that works.

They are are out of order and you shiuld see your doctor about that
I used to get bad period pains and the doctor put me on the pill
Every Time i come off it i get the bad pains again

ChoochiWoo Sorry its in the op! 14....thats pretty mean...if shed have been 20 id have probably let out a snigger too.

I'm very puzzled by this. Why would you snigger if she'd been 20? Isn't really severe period pain deserving of sympathy regardless of age?

Gruntfuttock · 29/11/2014 00:42

Sorry, I left out the quotation marks in my post above. The first line is what ChoochiWoo said in a post upthread.

She was a twat and if I was your DD I'd wait until she got sick and say "what a bloomin drama queen" and have a giggle. I find them AGONISING and am on Morphine for mine. I admit I do have an illness besides the period pain but even so.

Hope your DD's periods get easier OP.
