Aibu too not understand the reaction of the Ferguson Michael Brown in the USA

My Dh thinks that it is a disgusting example of racial inequality in America. But i think having read a lot of articles/news that the police officer was only protecting himself. Although it is unfortunate that someone so young died.

However Dh feels strongly it is disgusting racism. He called me blind and crazy (lighthearted). Aibu for thinking this.

Viva do you think I am black

do you think I need to be black to make that observation Hmm

VivaLeBeaver · 27/11/2014 23:14

I wouldn't dare come on a thread and say stuff like "most black people think this, most black people do that" like people have said about white people on this thread.

I wouldn't even think it.

Depressing.

Tinkerball · 27/11/2014 23:15

Creighton you said to me "people like you who seem to think that black people being killed by out of control Police Officers is of no consequence."

Thats a lie because I havent said that. So yes youve lied.

No why would I think you are lying about your PMs? I dont care who has or hasnt Pmed you actually. I do care when you accuse me of something I havent said.

And there you go again "because you feel like no-one can disagree with me"...of course people can disagree with me, we all have different minds and different opinions at the end of the day!

VivaLeBeaver · 27/11/2014 23:16

I haven't got a clue if you're black or white.

you said aout drowning black voices out. Whether that's your voice or other posters voices I don't know. But that's what you said, that white posters were drowning out black posters.

Tinkerball · 27/11/2014 23:16

Thanks for that Freudian, just wasnt sure who you were referring to.

YinmeetsYang · 27/11/2014 23:17

I've seen most of this just on this thread

Aibu too not understand the reaction of the Ferguson Michael Brown in the USA
mwalimu · 27/11/2014 23:17

When white people day 'most black people etc etc' it is usually based on preconceptions/stereotypes

When black people say 'most white people etc etc' it is usually based on personal experience, and collective shared experience

Nicknacky · 27/11/2014 23:18

What is the point in that "bingo"?

How disrespectful that a persons death has been made into a joke like that, no matter how he died.

creighton · 27/11/2014 23:19

nicknacky, can you read? my post said that when a death is caused by the police we have to take their versions of the truth with a pinch of salt. I did not say that the police don't investigate other crimes, but they would rather not be investigated themselves. why have you tried to say that I don't/can't believe in the judicial system?

Nicknacky · 27/11/2014 23:20

So black people can make judgement based on experience but if whites do it it's based on stereotype??

Lol I've heard it all now!

mwalimu · 27/11/2014 23:21

Mike Browns death is not made into a joke by that bingo. White reactions are

Nicknacky · 27/11/2014 23:22

I can read just fine thanks creighton so please stop trying to insult my intelligence.

All jury trials are based on evidence provided by police to the crown office. You don't appear to believe this will be factual so do you think convictions are inherently unsound if that is the case?

FreudiansSlipper · 27/11/2014 23:22

Viva you replied to my post

I never named anyone it is an observation I have made and seen too many times and yet again on this thread

mwalimu · 27/11/2014 23:23

Yes nicky and that is *fundamental to understanding racism and how to tackle racism.

If you are in denial about this, then you bring nothing to a discussion on racism

creighton · 27/11/2014 23:24

nicknacky, most white people really don't know any black people so their views are supposition and stereotype. we are surrounded by white people and white culture, white prejudice, white religion, this is after all a white country so we do know you. that is just common sense.

Nicknacky · 27/11/2014 23:25

So most white people don't know any black people but black people know loads of white people.....riiight.

VivaLeBeaver · 27/11/2014 23:26

I know you didnt name me but you said something along the lines that white people were drowning out black people's voices.

That makes me think I can't participate in this thread anymore.

ShebaRabbit · 27/11/2014 23:29

Creighton has posted about her experience of racism as a black woman, a white person can empathise but cannot fully understand what it is like to be treated negatively by the establishment because of the colour of their skin- it doesn't happen because the establishment is made up of white people.
Its a logical and fair point to make that black people's voices should take precedence over white people's when discussing racist incidents-they have experienced it, white people haven't. There is a huge body of academic literature around this, black people don't need white people to decide what isn't racism, perhaps its part of UK's colonial past that some posters cant see how offensive and insulting that is. The empire is long dead, get over it, white people cant tell black people what to feel and think anymore thankfully.
Black people are statistically much more likely to be stopped and searched by police- this is racial profiling. West midlands, Yorkshire police, the Met-every police force in England has featured in reports on institutional racism.
Im genuinely stunned at the posters who dont get this.
Tinkerball you have danced around the question so I'm putting it directly to you- are you black?

dreamingbohemian · 27/11/2014 23:31

So most white people don't know any black people but black people know loads of white people.....riiight.

That is, in fact, RIGHT:

Three-quarters of whites don't have any non-white friends

www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/08/25/three-quarters-of-whites-dont-have-any-non-white-friends/

mwalimu · 27/11/2014 23:32

My explanation was originally in response to vivas post

VivaLeBeaver · 27/11/2014 23:32

I agree that black people's views should be given precedence when talking about racism.

When its about a specific incident and the guilt of a person where there are witness statements and scientific evidence I don't think I agree.

creighton · 27/11/2014 23:35

you are drowning out the few black voices on this thread.

if the black population of Britain is 2% of the total and the white population of this white country is at least 90% it is the case that we will know more white people than white people will know black people. basic common sense, basic maths. do you believe that black people live in 'inward facing ghettos' and never leave them or speak to people from outside?

YinmeetsYang · 27/11/2014 23:37

So most white people don't know any black people but black people know loads of white people.....riiight.

Duh

FreudiansSlipper · 27/11/2014 23:38

but Viva if Michael Brown was white he would not have been shot and killed

the issue is racism that is why thousands of people black, white, Asian, native americans and hispanic have taken to the streets to protest

Nicknacky · 27/11/2014 23:38

Dreaming....it doesn't follow that white peoples perception is based on stereotypes but black people base it on knowledge.
