Louis Hamilton's necklace during his interview before the Abu Dhabi grand prix

Somebody help me sort this out in my own head:

DH is a massive Formula1 fan, so I end up watching and knowing far more about v fast cars than I ever would if I lived on my own.

LH wore a V Long, V Wide and V Bling gold necklace before the race while being interviewed - it was so huge and in-yer-face that we both gasped and grinned.

Now, accepting that LH has been a bit of a pop star of the racing world for some time (those earrings!) what I cannot figure out is whether my thinking 'OMG, how ostentatious and in very poor taste" is a snobby thing to think, no accounting for taste, he can afford it etc etc, or whether DH thinking "That is a cultural thing to wear" is rather a sweeping statement and racist as in "Black people like bling jewellery".

Confused

Any thoughts? Has anybody else even noticed the blardy thing?

DS is v v good at a certain sport and whilst watching the interview I told him under no circumstances is he to wear such utter shite if he becomes successful.

I think it looks vile. He had more bling on than Nicole.

I detest men wearing jewellery though, other than a wedding ring and watch.

Bearbehind · 23/11/2014 20:05

He did look like Puff Daddy.

I just can't warm to him.

If he's good it's all down to him, if it goes wrong- it's everyone else's fault.

PacificDogwood · 23/11/2014 20:07

He is so talented and has led such an exceptional life from a very young age.
He is swimming in money (apparently he owns a red private jet? Grin) and I don't expect him to share the same tastes as me: middle-aged, middle-class working mother of 4.

But, yes, I think the whole association with modern Hiphop and the associated bling totally puts me off.

Me, I'm still chortling at the commentators saying not once, but twice, that Nicole had kissed Lewis' helmet.

*I do know she kissed his crash helmet.

Bearbehind · 23/11/2014 20:11

Lol- so glad someone else noticed that baffled

My DH has been asking me to kiss his helmet ever since!

stiffstink · 23/11/2014 20:22

I cackled at the helmet kissing. DH rolled his eyes.

I googledL"lewis Hamilton necklace" and he has many, many awful necklaces.

PacificDogwood · 23/11/2014 20:25

You are all SO immature Grin

Thank goodness DH did not notice that - I'd never hear the end of it!

So he has many necklaces, does he?

So, is it just his 'thang', being young and loaded an'all that, or 'cultural'?
I'd rather he just had poor a specific taste that I don't happen to share. And couldn't afford either...

Personally, I think he never actually matured from toddlerhood, but then, I'm a Jenson fan Grin

PacificDogwood · 23/11/2014 20:29

Oh, Jenson came across very well in all the interviews leading up to the race.

I kind of hope we've not seen the last of him and he gets a seat next year

I bet he has nicer jewellery too Grin

Behoove · 23/11/2014 20:31

I thought he was channelling Ali G! Grin

But a wonderful win for him today.

vienna1981 · 23/11/2014 20:32

No jewellery on me apart from my old faithful watch. 30 plus years and still going strong. No rings, neckchains, bracelets. Nowt.

PacificDogwood · 23/11/2014 20:33

Yes, he was clearly v emotional and it's a HUGE deal to have won the world championship twice - what an achievement.

I wish Nico had not had his mechanical problem though...

OP posts:
weeblueberry · 23/11/2014 20:38

I agree about Nico. As much as I wanted Hamilton to win Id have rather it was won on completely equal footing.

I don't know what I'm going to do without my yearly Jenson fix!! Sad

peggyundercrackers · 23/11/2014 20:38

His jewellery makes him look a prat, those stupid diamond earrings he wears just make him look like a prat. I don't get it, neither does Dh.

BaffledSomeMore · 23/11/2014 20:40

Sorry for derailing :)
I have no idea about the bling but I'm from totally the wrong generation and demographic. I suppose he's living a lifestyle that's very 'flash' - the glamorous girlfriend, the trophies, the money. The signet ring and jangling heavy bracelet from the 70s gone mad.

Stokes · 23/11/2014 20:40

If it looks like a prat and talks like a prat...

PacificDogwood · 23/11/2014 20:40

I agree btw that he has had such a weird upbringing from such a young age that I am really not convinces of his general maturity.

Prat - yes, those earrings give me the Rage, I have to be honest.

I am a bit relieved that it's not just me.

weebluecherry, I'd imagine Jenson would make a great TV commentator on the circuit. We'd actually see more of him than just the top of his crash helmet Grin

OP posts:
alpacasosoft · 23/11/2014 20:41

Cant abide him- he is a PA aggressive little twat .

He and the shitsinger suit each other Grin

mypoosmellsofroses · 23/11/2014 20:44

Another snigger here at the helmet thing - got the look from DH for that one Grin

MajesticWhine · 23/11/2014 20:53

I am not too keen on his jewellery, but very pleased that Lewis won today. He's extremely talented and he deserved it. As for "completely equal footing", don't make me laugh. Lewis has had more than his fair share of mechanical failure this season, not to mention Rosberg taking him out of one race.

JADS · 23/11/2014 20:57

OT but did anyone see the Jenson interview with DC on Saturday? I had tears in my eyes.

I am also a middle aged middle class mother, only 2 kids though. Yes he looks daft to me, but he throughly deserved to win this year and I would personally have been incredibly peeved if the double points bs had come into play.

Totally missed the helmet kissing bit - I would have sniggered too. Maybe not so middle aged then Wink

helenthemadex · 23/11/2014 21:03

glad it isn't just me who thinks he is a prat with very dodgy taste, and another one who had a snigger at shitslinger "kissing his helmet" Grin

David Coulthard and Jenson Button commentating would be a dream team, sling that daft bint Suzie Perry back to bikes

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 23/11/2014 21:11

Ha, we said that the 'kissing his helmet' thing will definitely turn up on Scott Mill's innuendo bingo!

I just can't warm to him either - also, what is up with his accent? He is from Stevenage for fucks sake!

AnyFucker · 23/11/2014 21:17

I'd like to know why Lewis Hamilton talks like Michael Jackson.

ItsaboatJack · 23/11/2014 21:19

As for "completely equal footing", don't make me laugh. Lewis has had more than his fair share of mechanical failure this season, not to mention Rosberg taking him out of one race. - completely agree, Lewis had the race won from the start. I thought it was sweet revenge that he got to lap Nico at the end.

As for the necklace and earrings, not my taste at all but I wouldn't say they make him look like a twat.
