Louis Hamilton's necklace during his interview before the Abu Dhabi grand prix

Somebody help me sort this out in my own head:

DH is a massive Formula1 fan, so I end up watching and knowing far more about v fast cars than I ever would if I lived on my own.

LH wore a V Long, V Wide and V Bling gold necklace before the race while being interviewed - it was so huge and in-yer-face that we both gasped and grinned.

Now, accepting that LH has been a bit of a pop star of the racing world for some time (those earrings!) what I cannot figure out is whether my thinking 'OMG, how ostentatious and in very poor taste" is a snobby thing to think, no accounting for taste, he can afford it etc etc, or whether DH thinking "That is a cultural thing to wear" is rather a sweeping statement and racist as in "Black people like bling jewellery".

Confused

Any thoughts? Has anybody else even noticed the blardy thing?

Have you ever seen the two of them in one room together? Hm??

Aww he's alright is Lewis. He doesn't really lead that flashy a life, so what's wrong with a bit of sheeny shiny? Has he got a jewellery sponsor yet? Am sure he will soon.

It was a fantastic start for Lewis and I don't begrudge him the title.

The race would have been more exciting if Nico had been able to battle to the end though.

The thing that pisses me off is he now talks like Nicole. It's blessings this, blessed that.

Mate I've been to Stevenage too. No one talks about blessings down the Westgate.

Shiny red private jets are not flashy, oh no Grin

This would not be my choice of colour for my private jet even though red is my favourite colour.

Not that I will ever have to agonise over that decision...

Does he really have a red jet? Is a red jet flashier than a white one? They all have jets don't they, as they all live in tax havens. Apart from Mark Webber (well before, obvs), he used to live near me. He spoke to my dog me once and was very very nice.

Oh, Mark Webber leaving Formula 1 is a real loss to the sport IMO - he seemed most like a person who lived in the real world of all of them (closely followed by Jenson).
Does Jenson have a private jet?? I don't know.

Sorry, x-post

Yes, I take your point Grin

Don't get me started on absurd amounts of money being made by some sports superstars - that's a whole other thread.

I have also seen his house. It's pretty gorgeous flashy.

But yeah the accent is baffling. He also does that European 'yah, for sure' thing (so does Jenson though tbf).

Oh I'm violently agreeing with you really. And Googling private jets, as it's enlightening.
But I do feel sorry for lewis. Have met him too (at work, I worked for one of his sponsors), and he was alright.

But tiny. Apart from his neck which was massive.

I think the other drivers look much more sophisticated and understated than him , though some have just as much wealth. He just looks like a chav who has won the lottery.

Aww I like Hamilton, he looked like a kid at Christmas who had just got his most wanted toy when he was on the podium.

Button was very good today at deflecting comments, I hope he's in next season.

Bottas looks like an over grown baby.

I really love Mark Webber. I want a Jenson, DC and Leigh McKenzie commentary team. Eddie and Suzie can bog off.

Just watching a documentary about Hunt and Lauda. James Hunt had a bit of a thing about gold chains too. He was proper posh like.

It's not like he had a normal childhood. He's been in karting since 13 or whatever so loads of time spent in Europe, private tutors, etc. Must be weird.

It's his style or whatever. Each to their own.

Jesus Christ, the man has just achieved something only three British men before him have done, and us lets all mock his taste in jewellery. How very typically British, always like to pick holes in a winner.

McLaren took LH on when he was 10. 10 years of age Shock

Piggy, will do, thanks - I agree with you.

Tess, shame I'm not British Grin
Amazing achievement - am in total agreement and good luck to him.

Googling jets and private yachts is VERY enlightening and awakens the socialist in me Hmm

He's the only non white guy in F1, he appeals to different sponsors and has to play up that rap star image, without doing anything that might offend the oil money types.
