To not iron?!

Metalgoddess · 21/11/2014 10:34

I don't iron, never have done, don't see the point, I look well presented and not creased! I forget that people actually iron until someone mentions it and I get some very surprised responses from people when I tell them I don't even own an iron, telling me they iron underwear, towels etc. Please tell me I am not the only one?!

Some of the new technical fabrics and jersey tops you get from M&S and the White stuff really don't need ironing, I just fold those up, but make sure they are flattened out on the clothes horse when they are damp so maybe I'm just a big cheat

Farfromthetree · 21/11/2014 15:01

I've probably only ironed once in the past 5 years. And it was for a very very special occasion. I don't fold clothes either, but probably should do.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 21/11/2014 15:03

I guess this makes me sad that I'm waiting for the day my iron dies so I can justify buying steam generator iron.

I'm not as bad as I used to be as I'd iron everything including socks and knickers.

daisychain01 · 21/11/2014 15:03

Hey inthedark don't justify...just buy Grin. We're worth it! I haven't looked into the cost, mind you!

InglouriousBasterd · 21/11/2014 15:04

I iron a small pile once a week - which does include bedding, as I love the feeling of getting into ironed sheets - and school uniform bits that do need it. Some of my dresses need a quick press. It doesn't take long and it's actually one of the few household things I like. Stick a film on, cuppa, iron for an hour. Done. Satisfying Grin

PoirotsMoustache · 21/11/2014 15:10

The thing is, all of you who don't iron and say that nobody has told you that you look messy, or express surprise that you don't iron, probably are surrounded by polite people! I would never point out that someone looks messy, and I would feign surprise if someone told me they didn't iron, simply because that's obviously the expected reaction.

I can tell when someone hasn't ironed, because there are lots of flattened, tiny creases in the fabric that ironing would have eliminated.

DH doesn't iron his t-shirts, on the basis that his body heat will get rid of the creases. It doesn't. Not from around the level of his armpits upwards, anyway.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 21/11/2014 15:17

Yes I always notice when people haven't ironed clothes same as when they haven't polished shoes but would never point it out. My dad taught me how to do both (ex army) my mum on the other hand doesn't know where iron is kept.

HowlyBabblyBansheeeeeee · 21/11/2014 15:36

PoirotsMoustache I completely agree. Clothes look better ironed, I can tell if a garment hasn't been ironed but I wouldn't dream of telling that to the wearer.

mausmaus · 21/11/2014 15:46

it's the types of garment.
woven fabrics and stiff fibres need to be ironed to look good. strechy jersey type fabrics /soft fibres can get away without it.

tilliebob · 21/11/2014 15:48

I genuinely wish I knew how to get all 5 of us turned out smartly for school/work without ironing! I hear constantly of these mythical non ironers but I haven't met one in real like Grin

tilliebob · 21/11/2014 15:48

*life

Topseyt · 21/11/2014 15:57

Well, I am from a family of virtually non-ironers, so that was the way I grew up and the way I have remained. Grin

It was a revelation to me many years ago when I first got to know my MIL. She ironed absolutely everything. Nothing escaped. She hated it and complained massively about doing it, but still carried on. Towels, tea towels, all bed linen, every bit of underwear etc. You name it, it wasn't safe from her iron.

Purplecircle · 21/11/2014 16:00

I do choose my clothes carefully and make sure they aren't of a fabric that creases easily. My friends and family would definitely tell me if I looked creased

Whippet81 · 21/11/2014 16:08

I don't iron. Ever.

I am very smart - the key is to buy jersey type fabrics - creases fall out once you have worn them for a little while anyway.

I just haven't got the time to fit anything else in and if I did it certainly wouldn't be standing ironing.

DP wears tops to work that are a funny material and are virtually dry as they come out.

I hang everything as it comes out the washer.

My mum irons absolutely everything including pants and socks Confused

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/11/2014 16:19

Agree with Poirots - I can spot people who don't iron, but I wouldn't dream of telling them. I don't always iron myself, but I know I don't look as smart as I do when I make the effort, same with cleaning shoes, or putting on make-up.

puntasticusername · 21/11/2014 16:30

YANBU. I gave up ironing the day DH told me he couldn't tell the difference between stuff I'd ironed and stuff I hadn't.

rusticwomble · 21/11/2014 16:38

Ironing is something I might do if something is too creased to be seen in public, but apart from that, no thanks. I did a sheet once in Home Eccy at school and that put me off for years. ;)

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 21/11/2014 16:45

puntastic was your husbands comments made because your ironing was terrible and made little difference or because the clothes looked fine without being ironed?

I8toys · 21/11/2014 16:49

Some people love ironing - I don't. Pull everything straight from the dryer and hang it up. If something is creased I will iron it but I have a have a big pile and tackle it with a glass of vino. Thankless task. I would never notice if someone ironed or not.......unless they have the creases from the packet on the shirt or something.

Teawaster · 21/11/2014 16:50

I like ironing but only if I have something on TV at the same time. Makes me feel better about watching rubbish tv

fourwoodenchairs · 21/11/2014 16:53

I don't iron and never ever will.

tinyshinyanddon · 21/11/2014 17:03

No clothes ironed here either! But I do own an iron: it is mainly used for the Hama beads Smile

Hatespiders · 21/11/2014 17:24

Husband, newly arrived from Ivory Coast:

"What is this please?"
"It is an iron."
"What is it for please?"
"It is an electric machine for making clothes flat."
"A machine!! Please show me!" (Irons everything he can find, and still does)

Looks at Hoover.
"What is this please?"
"It is an electric machine for..." (carpets spotless) and so on...

Ketchuphidestheburntbits · 21/11/2014 17:47

Now that I'm older I can't even see the creases in my clothes and they match the wrinkles on my face too! Smile

makeitabetterplace · 21/11/2014 17:50

I don't iron either. Both myself and my husband have professional jobs and look smart. We don't own an iron either.
