To not iron?!

I don't iron, never have done, don't see the point, I look well presented and not creased! I forget that people actually iron until someone mentions it and I get some very surprised responses from people when I tell them I don't even own an iron, telling me they iron underwear, towels etc. Please tell me I am not the only one?!

I don't iron anything. Husband used to his work shirts but now doesn't need formal shirts. I will do the kids' uniforms once the start school though.

My mil irons my bed sheets. I am very luckyGrin

bouncinbean · 21/11/2014 11:48

Since having DD our ironing has shrunk dramatically - now its only formal blouses, shirts, trousers and skirts. Given that we rarely dress like that it gets very little use!
(Says the woman who used to love ironing - and would do bedsheets and all the clothes!)

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2014 11:49

I don't have a tumble dryer so we iron shirts, trousers and blouses.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/11/2014 11:49

I own an iron.

oh yes. I bought it several months after ex left and got custody of the iron.

I think it is upstairs in the bathroom cupboard somewhere. got no idea if it is any good as it has never been out of it's box. I wear casual stuff. I don't iron the childrens uniforms as ds regularly objects to school by screwing up or sitting on or throwing his uniform about. if it has been ironed and then got creased it would be more annoying.

Nanny0gg · 21/11/2014 11:50

I look well presented and not creased!

I don't understand this. I am very careful with my laundry, but all my clothes would look unkempt if they weren't ironed.

stealthsquiggle · 21/11/2014 11:51

Much as I am all in favour of not ironing in principle, DC's uniform defeats me. DS favours cosy brushed cotton shirts which definitely need ironing, and DD's uniform includes a kilt which needs at least a quick press almost every day because she scrunches it up into her kit bag when she changes for games and proper repleating every time it is washed Angry

juneybean · 21/11/2014 11:51

I don't own an iron...

canweseethebunnies · 21/11/2014 11:51

YANBU. I don't iron. I learnt that from my mother who also doesn't iron!

ButtfaceMiscreant · 21/11/2014 11:53

I only iron DD's clothes (dungarees, dresses and tops mainly now that she only wears babygros in the house these days; occasionally vests I will admit, depending on time of year) and DH's work shirts if he asks me to when I have the iron on anyway. My clothes only get done if I'm "dressing up" i.e. for a wedding.

Life is too short!

JADS · 21/11/2014 11:54

YANBU and love the ironing is a crime against the environment argument!

Dh irons his shirts (he is in the RAF so my ironing is sub par). I did used to iron sheets and duvet covers to get them dry quicker but now I have a Lakeland drier this isn't a problem. Probably defeats the ironing is an environmental crime thing though!

Sallystyle · 21/11/2014 11:54

I iron school trousers and sometimes shirts.

I hang them up but they are still creased.

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 21/11/2014 11:55

I am in the minority and I do iron all of the clothes. I don't iron bedding, towels or underwear etc.
The children and DH wear cotton or cotton mix shirts for school and they always need ironing. Maybe if we had a tumble dryer the clothes wouldn't be so creased and wouldn't need ironing but we don't have one and don't intend to get one due to running costs and venting issues.

SmashingInAthleticWear · 21/11/2014 11:58

I never iron and I deliberately avoid buying clothes that look like they might need it!

MilkRunningOutAgain · 21/11/2014 11:59

I iron DH's work shirts and on occasions a linen shirt I like for me. But that's it, I don't like ironing so even buy clothes that don't need it on purpose.

southeastastra · 21/11/2014 12:00

i don't iron unless i have to , i use a hairdryer to get creases out Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/11/2014 12:03

I'm somewhere in the middle, I iron outer clothes but not bedlinen, underwear, tea towels etc. Clothes straight off the line or dryer look passably OK, but they definitely look better ironed.

TheBiggestDinosaur · 21/11/2014 12:10

I iron. I'd be happy not to if I thought the clothes looked fine without, but...but...but they don't. What am I doing wrong?

I have to say that piles of neatly ironed, folded clothes do gladden my heart Grin.

I don't iron pants or socks, or towels; I do iron pyjamas and vests, and sometimes bedlinen. I love the DC getting into bed in crisp ironed pjs.

iwantgin · 21/11/2014 12:13

I iron. But we don't have a tumble dryer.

I think that tumbling can make clothes look less creased if they are retrieved whilst warm and hung up straight away.

Probably spend an hour or so x 2 per week ironing. Me, DH and DS(16). DH and DS wear shirts. T - shirts look untidy with out ironing.

I don't ever iron bedding or tea towels or undies though . That's crazy talk!

Mammanat222 · 21/11/2014 12:25

I too iron as little as possible. We do own an iron and ironing board though.

DS is getting a bit bigger now but most of his stuff is OK un-ironed. OH does his own and I think I have about 2 garments that need ironing and I hardly ever wear them.

I do have one bed linen set though that needs to be ironed. It's on creased at the moment and looks terrible, so I am tempted to throw it??? Life is too short for ironing bed linen Shock

Marylou62 · 21/11/2014 12:35

Time for a Hovis moment...cue sad music...I am one of 5 kids...4 DBs...my DM went to work and paid me to wash on Saturday (twin tub!!) and iron on sunday.(when I was about 11 years old till I left home at 18)....in those days all my DBs and DDad wore proper shirts...that's about 35 shirts a week!!! took me hours...I now hardly ever iron...I am anal though about hanging on line and folding..I straighten everything out and fold really well....some stuff gets hung in airing cupboard...I feel I have done my lifes share of ironing!! As a nanny I have had to iron lots of kids clothes..their Parrents choice...but I have also converted a few Parents...after they have seen that you can fold so well that it looks just as good...I would rather play lego with their DCs than stand ironing for hours...DD had some lovely dresses that needed ironing but I enjoyed that!..(as never thought I would ever have a DD)...some of my friend enjoy ironing though and find it relaxing...

whois · 21/11/2014 12:58

I don't iron. We don't have an iron. I wear things for work like dresses which don't need an iron, or suits which are dry clean anyway.

Bunbaker · 21/11/2014 13:11

"I don't understand this. I am very careful with my laundry, but all my clothes would look unkempt if they weren't ironed."

Same here. I prefer to wear natural materials, and I don't like most of the non iron stuff.

DD's school shirts look awful if I don't iron them, and so do most of my clothes. I don't hate ironing and I am not time poor, so I just watch something I have recorded on TV and get on with it. I don't iron sheets and duvet covers or underwear. OH does his own ironing BTW.

MissMooMoo · 21/11/2014 13:27

sorry but I know loads of people who don't iron and say they have no creases. ...but the thing is they do! the clothes don't look horrible but they look un ironed!
also usually things that don't need ironing aren't made from natural breathable fabrics (ie cotton)
I would rather wear a lovely breathable cotton dress in the summer (that takes a few minutes to iron!) than something polyester that makes me sweat and sticks to my body.

meglet · 21/11/2014 13:29

yanbu.

The last time I used the iron was when DS started reception. He's in Y3 now.

I line / airer dry most things and I don't buy anything that has to be ironed.

Metalguru · 21/11/2014 13:30

The only reason I own an iron is for the purposes of Hama beads :)
