To not iron?!

I don't iron, never have done, don't see the point, I look well presented and not creased! I forget that people actually iron until someone mentions it and I get some very surprised responses from people when I tell them I don't even own an iron, telling me they iron underwear, towels etc. Please tell me I am not the only one?!

I iron as little as possible. In fact, when ds1 stayed over and needed to iron a shirt for work we had to go on a scouting mission to find the iron.

I thoroughly dislike creased clothes too but the secret is in how you deal with the washing immediately after it comes out of the machine. If you just leave it in a muddled tangle then it'll need ironing. If you stretch out the creases and hang it up immediately - or tumble dry it if appropriate - then you won't need to iron it all.

googoodolly · 21/11/2014 13:43

I don't even own an iron, or a tumble drier. Shirts/blouses get hung on hangers and everything else on the clothes horse. I've never been told I look messy.

VanitasVanitatum · 21/11/2014 14:01

DPs shirts are the only things ironed in our house.. My DstepF irons absolutely everything... Including the bed sheets! Though to be fair my dm says she couldn't go back to non-ironed sheets now.. It's a slippery slope!!

formerbabe · 21/11/2014 14:03

You are all slatterns Grin

I iron everything especially underwear...heat kills germs, I think Hmm

littlejohnnydory · 21/11/2014 14:05

I don't think we have an iron. If we do, it must be in the garage somewhere.

littlejohnnydory · 21/11/2014 14:06

I am guilty of tumble drying everything though.

sunflower49 · 21/11/2014 14:07

I don't iron, I buy clothes that do not require it.
Because I cannot be arsed, that's why Grin Wink .

mausmaus · 21/11/2014 14:07

the iron is stricktly for hama beads in our house.

Selinasupreme · 21/11/2014 14:09

YANBU! All my mum ever did was iron and I can't stand it so refuse to do it! MIL irons socks. Sadist.

Summerisle1 · 21/11/2014 14:10

My former MIL used to iron socks AND underpants. I mean, why? Just why? It wouldn't have been so bad if she hadn't constantly moaned about the amount of ironing she did either.

KatieKatie1980 · 21/11/2014 14:14

DH has really irritating TM Lewin shirts that are a real pain in the arse to iron. They need ironing!

I do it twice a week. Never used to!

My Mum on the other hand, she irons underwear...tea towels...everything! o_O

Purplepoodle · 21/11/2014 14:15

I hardly ever iron, don't own an ironing board. I tumble most things. If we going for a special occasion or something like linen fabric then it gets ironed

Gawjushun · 21/11/2014 14:17

I am so relieved that others don't iron. My DM spends hours on her day off ironing pants, tea towels, and all sorts. She even irons my brother's clothes and he's in his 20s. It's weird.

With modern fabrics there's so much less need to iron. If my DH has a meeting then he will iron one of his good shirts, but otherwise the iron just takes up space. I used to iron my work shirts, but it find that as soon as I put my coat over them they look kinda creased anyway, so what's the point?

Purplepixiedust · 21/11/2014 14:19

I only iron school uniform and items which desparately need it (and which get little wear because of it) like summer tops and smart shirts (for DS). Manly holiday clothes.

I hate ironing and generally buy stuff that doesn't need it so long as you shake out creases to dry and fold/hang properly.

SASASI · 21/11/2014 14:22

We have an iron but I never use it. I iron linen trousers in the summer & that's it.
If DH needs a shirt ironed he either asks my mum or his!! More fool them.

We have a DS now though so I assume I will have to start ironing for him at some point ?

Purplecircle · 21/11/2014 14:23

Nothing in our house has been ironed since we moved in over a year ago. We do possess an iron and ironing board. We just don't see the point. Neither of us looks creased either. We hang things in a way they don't crease that's all

effinandjeffin · 21/11/2014 14:25

I hate ironing with a passion. But I do it. Because everything is full of creases otherwise and we'd look like we'd slept in our clothes. I'm really, really not understanding how you don't iron and yet somehow your clothes are crease free. Are you sure you haven't just got used to crinkly clothes? (And I've tried everything not to iron- tumble drying, laying out flat to dry, drying on a hanger etc)

bouncinbean · 21/11/2014 14:25

I realise its all about how you hang out the washing - because DP did it the other day and everything needed ironing.
You need to take it straight out when the load finishes. Each item needs a good shake and straighten out (what I used to do to get the clothes flat before the iron touches them anyway) and then be careful about how you hang it, e.g. a thick cotton top with lots of weight might need 3 or 4 pegs so it doesn't go out of shape if its going outside on the line. Same principle applies in winter if its going to be dried indoors on an airer.
If you've got the washing out before its started drying inside the machine, shaken it out well, hung it carefully then its crease free and can be folded and put away easily once its dry.
The only thing this doesn't work on is things that need a sharp crease - eg. shirts and trousers, so I avoid those Wink

queenofthemountains · 21/11/2014 14:30

I decided about 3 years ago to stop ironing, its so boring. I then freecycled my ironing board but kept the iron for hama beads. No one ever notices and even if they did they'd never say anything. My mum thinks it's terrible I don't iron but I don't care.

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 21/11/2014 14:56

I can understand that some people can get away without ironing some clothes due to using tumble dryers or hanging clothes immediately etc or buying clothes like leggings and stretch stuff that doesn't need ironing but even if I used a tumble dryer or hung the clothes differently I can't imagine that the school shirts could look decent without bring ironed or any clothing with a high cotton percentage. Do people wear more polyester and plastic Teflon coated clothes these days?

daisychain01 · 21/11/2014 14:57

I don't mind ironing, it is made bearable by 75 mins of The Archers omnibus on Sunday mornings. The only thing I hate is ironing double king size bedding, utter nightmare. I try where possible to minimise the work (buying DSS non-iron shirts for example - but I still do a quick iron over so he looks smart for school. Takes about 5 mins total for 1 week's worth of shirts, 1 min per shirt)

But YANBU to dislike it, find it boring and a waste of time, if you have other things you prefer doing!

I'm getting myself a new iron, one of those big steam ones that takes the work out of it.

Happy to take bags of ironing in, swap you for oven cleaning or fridge and freezer clean/defrosting

PoirotsMoustache · 21/11/2014 14:59

I want one of these magic dryers that don't leave clothes far too creased to wear without ironing. Mine makes clothes looks like they've been screwed up in a ball for 3 years Sad

Bunbaker · 21/11/2014 14:59

I think they do Inthedark. I wear cotton, wool and linen. I don't like wearing artificial materials, and am prepared to iron because I don't like looking scruffy. I also need to look smart for work so don't wear casual clothes that don't need ironing.

Topseyt · 21/11/2014 15:00

Ironing??? What is ironing??!! Confused

My mum virtually never ironed it is a rare event that I do any either. I hate it with a passion. Life is just too short for that sort of malarkey IMHO. Wink I do have an iron, but it is very reclusive and simply hides in my kitchen cupboard.

Hubby's office shirts do not get ironed. It would be a waste of time because he cycles to work with his shirt for that day crammed into his rucksack or bicycle pannier.

The girls' school uniform washes beautifully and has never needed ironing.

As for myself, I can wear smart casual clothes to work and tumble drying keeps those OK. Sometimes I am even working from home.

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 21/11/2014 15:00

daisychain I want one of those steam generator irons! I'm sure all that steam will cut my ironing time in half. Off to figure out how to justify (to myself) buying a steam generator.......
