To have a rug in a carpeted living room?

DP reckons so.

We have moved to a new house and the living room has a nice cream carpet. The room has cream walls too so it's all very plain. Yesterday I went to Ikea and bought a rug to inject some life in to the room but DP said its proper odd to have a rug on top of a carpet. It's a thin woven rug with a pleasing geometric pattern which reminds me of a Spirograph. It's not like I'm adding a thick shaggy thing on top of already thick carpet.

I don't think its weird. Who is right?

We have rugs on carpets

The only rooms which we have rugs in are those with wood/laminate floors, I've never thought about putting rugs on top of carpets but I can see the benefits. If it keeps the carpet looking clean and new then go for it.

The large rug in the living room is very useful for covering up where my late lamented house bunny chewed multiple holes in the carpet. I always had a throw covering the futon for similar reasons.

I'm not crazy about this.

I have a rug on my carpets, carpets are beige and show every tiny bit of dirt.

I think to say it's unreasonable would be a bit much but I don't think it looks right to have rugs on carpets.

So glad to read this! I always thought it was a design no-no, I am clueless about what to do in our home sometimes. I read an encouraging article this morning saying it is fine is you don't have a shaggy carpet.

Now I find this thread Grin

I want a rug for two reasons:

(1) the carpet we got laid a year ago has got all wrinkled and I can't really get people out with COVID.

(2) we have an irregular-shaped living room and I wanted to do that trick where you pull certain furniture together using a rug to define an area.

What I'd REALLY like is a wooden floor with a rug but I'd have to persuade DH first! He is up for the idea of the rug on carpet though.

I have seen a few I like. Now to find one we both like!
