To have a rug in a carpeted living room?

DP reckons so.

We have moved to a new house and the living room has a nice cream carpet. The room has cream walls too so it's all very plain. Yesterday I went to Ikea and bought a rug to inject some life in to the room but DP said its proper odd to have a rug on top of a carpet. It's a thin woven rug with a pleasing geometric pattern which reminds me of a Spirograph. It's not like I'm adding a thick shaggy thing on top of already thick carpet.

I don't think its weird. Who is right?

Also have rugs covering strategic mucky parts of our stupid cream carpet.

Not at all odd. We have rugs in most of the rooms in our house. And not just because they cover the mucky, doggy parts of the fitted carpets either!

I have rugs on my carpet. We rent and the carpet is shitty and old and prone to staining (yes water spills stain the bloody thing) like you OP I have beige walls and carpet so its nice to liven it up, also it is open plan so it defines an area too.

you are right, we also have a rug on our cream carpet, saves sanity as cream carpets are a ridiculous idea.

Not odd! It protects the carpet to some degree. I have one in the high traffic areas.

Yanbu. I can think of plenty of houses where I have seen this and it looked nice. A word of warning though - the kind of woven rug you describe can transfer dye to a pale carpet.

We have lots of bright rugs over our darkish turquoise carpets. They're washable too, and can be moved around for a bit of a change. They protect the fitted carpet and look nice and cheerful. Only thing, as I get older, I have to be careful not to trip on them. Yanbu.

My living room and dining room are carpeted but also covered with ikea rugs.

I never had rugs on the carpet but my new DH brought a circular, straw mat with him and it went into the bedroom. Every time it was walked on, bits of straw broke off and the mat had to be lifted up to vacuum underneath it.

We went on holiday and he bought a beautiful rug in Morocco. It looks good so I'm glad he bought it as his souvenir.

makeyourown it's actually cream (jus to add to the creaminess of the room ) but the pattern is printed on to the top in black so hopefully there shouldn't be any colour transfer.

Happy we have a doormat like that! I've had it years and it pisses me off every day because it sheds little straw bits constantly but I've only just got round to buying a non-straw doormat. It has greatly improved my life

We have a rug on the carpet in front of the wood burner, far cheaper to replace than the whole carpet for any burn marks.

I have a neutral carpet, walls and suite so accessorise with colour coordinated cushions, rug, curtains and lighting. Lifts the room nicely. Rugs are Good!
