To not buy my 6 year old an ipad or even a tablet?

She's nagging for me to allow her to put one of these on her Christmas list...I've said no as I feel she's too young and also too obsessive over her older sister's tablet....always nagging to have a go etc and then refusing to get off it.

She's listing her friends and how "X has a tablet, Y has an ipad!" on and on and on!! AIBU?

I don't think YABU but you can't blame her for asking or constantly wanting to go on her sisters, technology is everywhere now days and if you already have one in your house for older DCs then of course she going to want it. If you could afford it then you no it would be a well used present and appreciated .

Yanbu. And I say that as someone who works for a company that sells tablets on contract!

It's natural she may want one because her sister has one but you don't have to get her one. If it makes you feel any better I know someone who got their DD a tablet for her 2nd birthday. So its not uncommon now but you don't have to go along with it.

I wouldn't and didn't buy the latest technology for my dc at this age and glad I didn't.
The amount of threads on here talking about replacing screens that children too young to have them have broken.
I don't think it has anything to do with being able to afford it tbh.
Now may be a good time to talk to her about being a leader rather than a follower it will save you loads in not shelling out due to peer pressure.

I wouldn't really want to get a 6 year old a tablet of her own as prints says because they bust them so easily!

My 6yr old has an iPad and an Xbox on his list. He won't be getting either of them. He can ask all he likes. Yanbu.

It's difficult. I have a 6 year old and we are giving her one for Xmas. ( it's actually DH's old one which he had until he won a new one in a raffle)

We need her to have one as her school use them in the classroom and they have also introduced a home learning platform which she found impossible to use on our laptop but really easy on my iPad.

She also does her spellings on my iPad at the moment.

I bought my daughter one for her 5th birthday... She had it 2 days before she left it where the puppy could get it. Luckily he only got the edges. She learned her lesson after that... Wait no she didn't, she left it in the same place again just a couple of days later and the puppy crunched right through it. That tablet lasted her a week.
We thought she was mature enough a couple of months ago, she was almost 7 so she got a new one as an early present. Up to a fortnight ago, it was being well looked after... Until she left it on the floor and her sister stood on it. Rip tablet number 2. Anyhoo, what I'm saying is, if you can afford one and she is more respectful of her belongings than my daughter, get her one, if she's anything like mine, toys get left where pets can eat them etc... Then I'd avoid it.

Angels Yes...my DD's class learn on them too and have a learning platform for doing homeword etc. I'm still not buying her one. She doesn't "need" one. The learning platform is to compliment what she does in school....and she can manage on my laptop or not at all as far as I'm concerned!

My son has a kindle fire hd which he had last xmas when he was 7. It got him off my ipad lol!

It is really good as he can read on it and if you want to use the kids mode you can set time limits for games.

But of you don't want her to have one yet, thats fine too.

My dd got a kindle fire when she was 9.5yrs. It is still going strong 2 yrs later and is well looked after. We have no other tablets in the house and even though Ds (7.5) would LOVE one we definitely won't get one for him until he is older.

I wouldn't. My DSs are 10 and 8 - neither have a tablet, although they would love one. They do get to use ours occasionally (usually at weekends).

I think there is more to life than playing FIFA 15 or Templerun, which is what they mainly do. They are busy after school with football, tennis, swimming, piano and play dates and I want them to play with each other / read etc.

I may be in a minority here, but we also don't have telly other than Fridays or weekends - it works for us and no one complains!

I don't think you're being unreasonable if you don't want her to have one, but my 4yo has a kindle fire with age appropriate games and time limits on it for those and books she can look at for as long as she wants.

We have a family iPad which is mostly used by her big brother.

They use ipads and tablets in schools now. I don't see the problem using them at home so long as they're not on them all the time.

Hmm, I see the post above about kids not taking care of them. DD got hers on her 4th birthday and its still in mint condition.

My four year old uses my old one. He still has to ask to go on it and we keep it put away and give it to him. We generally let him though. But we control what apps are on it and only download ones we are happy for him to use - largely (but not exclusively!) fairly educational ones.

Keema, mine unfortunately get their lack of respect of items/untidiness etc from their father ;) they're a nightmare. I can't help looking at all their Christmas presents and wondering how long until they're in the bin :( I was respectful of my belongings as a kid, sounds like yours is too. Just wish my kids had learned that :/

Lady well that wouldn't be fair on her sister...it's her tablet and she's ten. She does let DD2 on it most of the time when she asks....but I don't want to say that it's to share as in halves.

Infinity my Dd IS the kind of kid who'd leave it on the floor or take it into the bathroom...you know that kind...she'd dump it on the lawn and then forget all about it.

Sky no but I know that if I let her put it on the list she will convince herself that she's getting one, she will ask Father Christmas and tell us all that he said yes...she will go on and on about it till the big day and then it won't be there. Better to not allow it on the list.

My 8 year old dgs bought a Nexus 7 with his birthday money. He had been wanting a tablet since he was 6. He is only allowed it for preset times, usually 20 minutes and he knows that at the end of his time he must finish whatever he is busy with and switch off. If he sulks or fusses the tablet is put away for 48 hours.
His little brother will be 6 in February and is asking for a tablet for Christmas (the elves can't make electronics you know) but if he saves his Christmas and birthday money he will be allowed to buy one. Atm he plays on his parents tablet while his db uses his own.

My Ds1 (8) would like his own tablet or games console, but I'm not keen on him having one that is 'his' because I think he'd be on it all the time. We have a family iPad and a computer that he has limited access to, but we retain control of what games he can play and for how long, and can supervise his internet use.
