To not buy my 6 year old an ipad or even a tablet?

She's nagging for me to allow her to put one of these on her Christmas list...I've said no as I feel she's too young and also too obsessive over her older sister's tablet....always nagging to have a go etc and then refusing to get off it.

She's listing her friends and how "X has a tablet, Y has an ipad!" on and on and on!! AIBU?

My DD is 4 and is having an iPad as one of her Christmas presents.

I know a couple of other 4 & 5 year olds getting the same.

SoonToBeSix · 18/11/2014 20:02

I would buy her one but only if you can afford it. If you get a decent case she won't break it. They don't have to be expensive this one is less than £30 with great reviews.

Surely that's a "when you are 10" or " when you can show me you can use it for a sensible amount of time" then.

Fairywhitebear · 18/11/2014 22:42

YANBU. I think it's ridiculous.

However, to say you can't afford one, when you clearly have bought her sister one in the past, is a bit off. I'm a big believer in treating children the same, so if you bought the sister one, really you should have been setting money aside to buy your other daughter one imo (in due time of course)

yanbu

ds has a kindle and we have an ipad that he plays minecraft on. he wants an xbox to play better minecraft Hmm he is not getting one yet

i limit screen time they do not use their imagination while playing screen games, this is something they grow out of so quickly much prefer to see a group of children interacting with one another rather than screens

No YANBU. A 6 year old doesn't need a tablet fgs. As long as there are computers / tablets or whatever for them to use for educational purposes.

Yanbu. Dd has been asking for one for the last three years, but I STILL think she's too young at 9. When I see her friends who come to sleepovers glued to theirs rather than interacting with their friends I know we've made the right choice. I do have one, and she is allowed an hour a week on it. More than enough at this age imho.

duchesse · 18/11/2014 23:18

Bloody ridiculous to buy a fricking expensive, fragile, developmentally unnecessary piece of equipment for a 6 yo. As for the people buying them for 4 yo, words fail me. Shock

Fishstix · 18/11/2014 23:19

Also been some really interesting studies done recently which link devices such as iPads with. Change in the way the brain works and retain information...I know myself I have noticed issues withmy eyesight and my short term memory in the last couple of years. I spend about two hours a day on mine, I realise how addictive it is and there is no way I want dd to have that issue...will to find you the best article to link to...

My 4 year old will love her iPad... She's getting lots of other stuff too, dolls, books, games, DVDs, arts & crafts, play dough, soft toys.... A frozen castle... She's very well rounded and won't spend all her time on it, it will be a toy the same as any other toy.

iPads are amazing for children, if used properly and in moderation.

duchesse · 18/11/2014 23:21

Steve Jobs' stance on technology for his children.

The Steiner Waldorf school in Silicone Valley (zero technology at the school) is extremely well-attended by the children of people working in high-tech industries.

curiousgeorgie · 18/11/2014 23:22

Dixie - do any children get just one present nowadays? Wink I think DD1 has about 50!!

YANBU. They are brilliant but I wouldn't buy one for that age

MrsFlorrick · 18/11/2014 23:24

Not at all. My DD (5.4) won't be getting any iPad or tablet anytime soon. Her and her 3yo brother have a playroom full of toys and plenty of things to do which don't involve staring at a screen.
DH and I have iPads and the DC can earn screen time on ours. But no way would I buy them one and give them free access to it. They need to run around and play not sit and stare at a screen.
