to call in sick or to not call in sick

Was unwell yesterday, sore throat, headache etc. Took paracetamol and worked for 10 hours.

I am due to work today but have woken up and can hardly talk. I've been awake a few hours and it hasn't got any better. If sound does come out I sound like Barry white crossed with a teenage boy.

Don't feel too bad apart from that. Bit tight chested. Problem is today I'm working on a shop floor, so full on engaging and chatting to people all day.

I also know my team are short staffed.

And I called in sick last Sunday and left early Thursday due to issues within my team and my manager was in support of that.

Otherwise it would be a no brainer and I would phone in but I'm not sure on this one..

You sound quite poorly. I had something similar last week op. I took one day off when I literally could not make a sound. There is no way I could teach 30 5 year olds all day like that. I hardly ever take time off. You don't sound malingering to me at all. In your circumstances I probably would show my face and see what they say but don't feel terrible if you get sent home.

LoxleyBarrett · 16/11/2014 09:40

Which is what I have said on several occasions tobysmum - However I do feel that I am being grouped in with the "ridiculous" group of yours!

tobysmum77 · 16/11/2014 09:42

why not call in sick and spend the day looking at job adverts/ updating your cv? It sounds shite and the people on here have been vile.

illness is rarely well timed because stress makes it more likely to strike.

CromerSutra · 16/11/2014 09:44

I would add that where I work no one takes the mickey and consequently if people are ill others are sympathetic. If you have loads of people swinging the lead it does make people feel resentful but probably also means they are generally unhappy in their work.

tobysmum77 · 16/11/2014 09:44

haha Yes double use of the word 'ridiculous' its the only way to describe a lot of things on mn. I will introduce a new 'confusing' category Grin

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 16/11/2014 09:44

If someone trots out the 'I've never taken time off work ill' I tend to think well lucky fucking you! Hmm

It's only by sheer luck I haven't had any lurgies passed on to me that I haven't been off work sick.

It's not a crime to be ill.

op seriously don't overdo it. And get yourself to the Docs soon as. Really hope you get well soon xx

Cornettoninja · 16/11/2014 09:46

Not sure why I'm getting a Hmm? There's clearly a fair bit of cross posting going on...

Of course breathing issues should be checked out asap, but then that's fairly new info that wasn't apparent in every post the op has made was it? I've made the point only the op knows the ins and outs of her situation and without wanting to sound heartless if she's struggling to breath she needs the NHS not MN. I would expect an adult to know that, I can't hear her breathing through the screen.

amyhamster · 16/11/2014 09:47

vintage
hope the shift goes okay & if you get chance to post on here to let us know how you're doing
Bullying is awful so I sympathise Flowers
if you get worse don't carry on your shift & ask to come home :)
Good luck !

Plonkysaurus · 16/11/2014 09:48

Well if it's a case of putting a brave face on things I would show up and have a quiet word with the manager. Tell them you feel awful and breathing's a struggle - a good manager will make that decision for you and force you to stay off until you've seen a doctor.

Mrs DeVere is right, that our long hours culture does us no favours. But that's not too helpful when you're facing a bad work environment and have already gone off sick in the week. Hope you feel better soon op.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/11/2014 09:49

If they are going to bully you on basis of having been ill and you are having to shoulder a massive workload anyway and don't feel you can take any time off even when genuinely ill I would be lookino for a new job too.

Smartleatherbag · 16/11/2014 09:49

OP, you sound like you should stay home. Get well soon! It's rotten being ill. Flowers
Mrsdevere, your posts are by far the most sensible! I hate the martyr culture. If you are ill, keep it to yourself, rest and get well.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/11/2014 09:50

Also it doesn't sound like she has a good manager who will do the right thing

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 16/11/2014 09:51

My Hmm wasn't to you cornett it was to 'I've never taken time off work sick ' brigade Smile

MonstersBalls · 16/11/2014 09:54

I think you should go in and try to work but tell them you'll have to go home if you get any worse. Try and put a couple of hours in so you don't feel guilty but really you need to rest.

I hope it goes well tomorrow.

Cornettoninja · 16/11/2014 09:55

Ah. Thanks Mrs Smile

That definitely doesn't apply to me then Wink

Vintagecrap · 16/11/2014 09:56

My own manager isnt actually in today, his manager is, and if i see him at all it will only be briefly. So, i know i wont get sent home.

The bullies are a core group of 4, the rest of the staff are fine and there are no issues, friendships out of work and that sort of thing.

Anyway, i should stay home but am going in. Short staffed and not wanting to be off again this week.

Im not a great judge of illness it has to be said. Years of being a lone parent and not having the option of being ill have made if quite difficult to judge, because i do just get on with it.

OP posts:
ChippingInAutumnLover · 16/11/2014 09:57

You should be at home getting better, not going to work making yourself worse:(

I think in your position I'd be weighing up how likely they are to sort the bullying out. If I thought they would be able to sort it out I'd go in and show a bit of willing, even if I came home early, but if I thought the horrible situation would continue anyway I'd stay home, rest & look for another job.

Take care.

tobysmum77 · 16/11/2014 09:58

Neither can any of us cornet but I reckon err on the side of caution. She's clearly having an absolutely shitty time at work and may well not be thinking entirely straight.

londonrach · 16/11/2014 09:59

Vintage you added to your story from your original op. At the start you just lost your voice but felt ok now you having problems breathing. If its the later please please dont go in and get yourself to a & e or ofh gp. Hope you feeling better soon x

PreMadonna · 16/11/2014 10:00

You don't want to go in do you?

Vintagecrap · 16/11/2014 10:06

At the start i was still in bed. My lost voice isnt from my throat, i dont have a sore throat, its from my chest. Maybe i should have said that.
sorry.

The breathing and coughing up crap happened as i got up and started doing stuff, like going downstairs and having a shower etc.

I dont want to go in, no. I know i am too ill to go in, but, i am going in.

OP posts:
tobysmum77 · 16/11/2014 10:09

in that case you are bonkers pure and simple.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 16/11/2014 10:10

Me neither Cornett Wink

Op. If the bullies are there cough and sneeze all over them xx

tobysmum77 · 16/11/2014 10:11

if you turned up to work in normal environments they would be Confused I promise.

Please find a job where the people are reasonable.

Icantstopeatinglol · 16/11/2014 10:13

Op, if you're not well don't go in.

Also, please think of other people you could pass your 'lurgy' on to if you're talking to customers. I'm immunosuppressed and tend to get hit a lot harder than most when it comes to illnesses that others can carry on as normal whilst having. I can also end up hospitalised if it turns in to an infection. There's nothing worse than going somewhere and having someone talking to you whilst coughing and spluttering.
Hope you feel better soon tho and also hope those bullies get what they deserve Flowers
