AIBU?

to call in sick or to not call in sick

Was unwell yesterday, sore throat, headache etc. Took paracetamol and worked for 10 hours.

I am due to work today but have woken up and can hardly talk. I've been awake a few hours and it hasn't got any better. If sound does come out I sound like Barry white crossed with a teenage boy.

Don't feel too bad apart from that. Bit tight chested. Problem is today I'm working on a shop floor, so full on engaging and chatting to people all day.

I also know my team are short staffed.

And I called in sick last Sunday and left early Thursday due to issues within my team and my manager was in support of that.

Otherwise it would be a no brainer and I would phone in but I'm not sure on this one..

maybe but are you also bullied for feeling ill?

Lauren What's your point? Why are you needing to be unpleasant to someone who is ill and being bullied at work?

You should have stayed at home and not listened to the Mnetters who would go into work with a leg hanging off.

And yes people do complain if retail staff look and sound ill.

Get well soon.

You don't work on a food counter or something, do you?

I just can't believe its never happened to me, I employ a large team many of whom have worked ill (their choice) and in all my years a customer has never complained, so yes I'm interested how you get 3 in one day, its not unpleasant that I'm asking did anything else happen? Like was op angry/upset/rude etc. I'm interested in the circumstances

Lauren, just because something has never happened to you, does not mean it is not possible.

I work in a place where there is a high expectation of a certain level of service and customers do frequently leave feedback when they leave, because of this.

I didn't do anything wrong, as the details of the complaints are what I posted, due to being ill and unable to do my job.

I do not work on a food counter. Customers are spending upwards of 4k with me.

I know, that's why I didn't imply you were lying, that's why I asked if anything else happened to make them complain, I asked a question as its not happened to me or my staff so I'm curious that's all, I'm up to my eyeballs on 12 different meds and morphine, tramadol and fentanyl daily and sometimes it might be evident I'm in pain and I'm interested how its viewed and no ones said it to me so I'm intrigued hence the question

In fact I've seen the opposite - huge praise heaped on bank staff and the like who have turned up to work when they have a bad cold as we know they are the true heroes rather than the skivers.

I have an immuno compromised DH He has ischemic heart disease and was recently diagnosed with COPD (emphysema) if he caught an infection from someone who has come into a workplace like a bank or a shop it could put him in hospital or even kill him. I would be complaining loudly and publicly if anything like this happened.

And this attitude is something to consider if there are any carers in the workplace who could take infections home to immuno compromised relatives.
