to call in sick or to not call in sick

Was unwell yesterday, sore throat, headache etc. Took paracetamol and worked for 10 hours.

I am due to work today but have woken up and can hardly talk. I've been awake a few hours and it hasn't got any better. If sound does come out I sound like Barry white crossed with a teenage boy.

Don't feel too bad apart from that. Bit tight chested. Problem is today I'm working on a shop floor, so full on engaging and chatting to people all day.

I also know my team are short staffed.

And I called in sick last Sunday and left early Thursday due to issues within my team and my manager was in support of that.

Otherwise it would be a no brainer and I would phone in but I'm not sure on this one..

It's not a checkout. I think that would be less speaking than what I need to do. Least you would have a reprieve when you were scanning stuff.

I'd go in. That way they'll see you've at least made an effort and hopefully they'll send you home. Good luck! X

LoxleyBarrett · 16/11/2014 08:30

So in this place where it's all hands on deck (even at Director level) there is not one alternative job you could do.

I work in a public facing role and would easily be able to accommodate a staff member with a croaky voice. With such a large number of visitors there must be some organising / cleaning etc that needs to be done.

Vintagecrap · 16/11/2014 08:32

Um no.
But thanks for your input.

Vintagecrap · 16/11/2014 08:37

Besides which, my team is short today. Hence me doing a different to usual role.

Any other job they could find for me, wouldn't actually be of any use to them today.

Besides which it's not just a croaky voice. No sound is coming out and I'm wheezing all over the place as it's very difficult to get a breath in.

I hope you feel better soon vintage, I think going in is a good idea, if they want to send you home they can. Your voice might improve as the day goes on, mine always seems worse first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

Hope you feel better. Soon.

Vintagecrap · 16/11/2014 08:39

So cleaning, even if that was something they could ask me to do. Which they can't. ...

Wouldn't be any good as I can't breathe properly.

I've now taken to coughing up all kinds of phlegm in a lovely luminous shade which is only going to add to today's fun.

Is it a clothes shop ? Can't you sort rails, man the changing room

Or can't you just tell us where you work ?!

lougle · 16/11/2014 08:39

Go in. You'll be seen to be making an effort.

LoxleyBarrett · 16/11/2014 08:40

If you are wheezing all over the place and unable to get a breath in I would suggest seeing a doctor. You have obviously deteriorated considerably since your post a 7.54am.

I really think in light if that you should stay home
Keep you're phlegm out of the public 's way Grin

EndoplasmicReticulum · 16/11/2014 08:41

I went to work with no voice last week. Was tricky but manged with use of sign language and lots of writing on the board (teacher). As a pp said if it's d+v I stay home but cold type things go in.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 16/11/2014 08:43

Just take care, Vintage. You could end making yourself even worse xx

Bakeoffcakes · 16/11/2014 08:43

If you can't breathe properly you do need to see a dr ASAP.

Is anyone with you?

Softpebbles · 16/11/2014 08:43

If you are doubting whether you should phone in you should go in.

Plonkysaurus · 16/11/2014 08:43

Erm, call your manager? Try to explain? I know you have no voice so telephone is difficult, but surely if your name flashes up on their phone and they hear wheezy squeaky growls, they'll think "ah vintage has lost her voice."

You seem to want lots of responses telling you to stay off despite you saying you actually don't feel poorly today.

AhhhhhhryaOfGhostHouseSnark · 16/11/2014 08:45

Xposted with you, then typed a reply and lost it. Angry
The wheezing doesn't sound good, have you had a hot steamy shower to clear your chest ? It's probably worth speaking to a dr if it's that bad.

PepsiTwirl · 16/11/2014 08:46

No one on here knows how you feel.

You are trying to justify yourself to people on the Internet.

wannabestressfree · 16/11/2014 08:48

From your posts it sounds like you don't really want to go in but in light of the fact you have had very recent time off AND they are short staffed I would go and put up with it.

LadyLuck10 · 16/11/2014 08:49

Just go in your manager can decide if you aren't going to be much use.
A lot of excuses trying to justify why you can't go in.

Text your manager and say that you have lost your voice but are coming in

She says she feels fine but can't talk and is a bit flemmy now. That doesn't sound too bad. Also potentially you could loose your voice for a few weeks. Unless properly ill (flu, sick, the shits, migraine) I would aim to attend.
