To think that the new SNP leader just pledged to ignore the will of the majority of Scottish people?

Forgive me if I'm being naive - I may well be.

But Nicola Sturgeon pledging to continue to fight for Scottish independence is essentially a pledge to fight against the majority of the Scottish people's democratically expressed wishes?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-30011423

I mean, it couldn't be clearer. The majority of Scottish people voted No. So she's essentially saying "Hey, majority of Scotland - I'm going to ignore what you voted for in a democratic process, and fight for the opposite!".

It smacks of arrogance, and a complete disregard for what people voted for!

I may be missing something though, but it's intriguing and bugging me so I'd be interested to hear what others think.

Bog queen, how can you seriously say it doesn't bother people that much! Clearly it bother the majority of the people of Scotland as they voted no. Your response of just typical of yes campaigners who want to ignore the sovereign will of the people of Scotland, as expressed in the recent referendum.

TheBogQueen · 14/11/2014 20:14

Well people have voted for a nationalist party. Nationslism is a pretty clear part of their agenda, it's not like they are keeping it a secret!

If you don't like it, vote for a different party at the next election. If labour get into Holyrood there won't be another referendum for quite a while.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 14/11/2014 20:15

Well we'll see how Labour does in the general election. And the SNP. Should be interesting.

TheBogQueen · 14/11/2014 20:21

It will be interesting - was watching QT and leader of Plaid Cymru was talking of coalition with SNP and Greens.
If labour continue to mess this up on an epic scale then election will be interesting fir the first time since 1997.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 14/11/2014 20:23

I voted Labour in 1997. For the last time. Grin

OOAOML · 14/11/2014 20:30

I voted SNP in 2011 - as a protest, not thinking they would get a majority. I have friends who voted SNP based on policy issues who voted No. If they are going to be dominated by the single aim of independence then they will attract some people who have never voted for them before and they will lose others.

I wish people would at least wait for the Smith Commission before planning the next referendum. We were told it would take 18 months to independence if it was a yes vote, but people seem to expect major constitutional reform within 2 months.

run2 · 14/11/2014 20:53

'as the first minister, doesn't she have a duty to all the people of Scotland, not just the ones who voted her way?'

I didn't vote for Cameron. Does he have a duty to all of the people in the UK? Yes. Do I feel he is carrying that out? No.

bideyinn · 14/11/2014 20:58

She is the leader of the Scottish Nationalist Party whose main reason for existing is to achieve independence. The SNP are the democratically elected government of Scotland so no, she was not being arrogant.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 14/11/2014 21:00

Clues in the name. The leader of the snp talking about nationalism at an snp conference?

Who'd have thunk it?

Behoove · 14/11/2014 21:15

I have never voted labour in my life. Next year I'll take one for the team if its a means to ensure not having to go through all that again. I suspect I won't be the only one.
Sometimes I wonder if it makes much of a difference anyway (voting labour or conservative) nothing changes either way.
I'm still glad I voted No. And for information I'm neither an OAP or was swayed by any of the things mentioned in bog's post. I decided at the beginning and didn't waver.

MissMooMoo · 14/11/2014 21:21

MrsTerry the Bloc Quebecois are a federal party in Canada, I think you mean the Parti Quebecois which is the provincial party.
totally agree but as long as the snp are in power they will aim for a referendum because that's what they want. Don't vote for them if you don't want it!

trixymalixy · 14/11/2014 21:22

I can't bear for there to be another referendum anytime soon. It made me so ill due to the stress of it all I was off work for a month and still haven't recovered fully. It was horribly divisive and DH and I have said that we will move if there's another one. It has done terrible damage to relationships.

I was utterly furious with Salmond when he seemed to be suggesting to ignore democracy and just declare independence anyway!

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 14/11/2014 21:46

Bakewell, we're not in Scotland but DH works in oil and gas and made that very point this evening ...

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 14/11/2014 21:53

This thread is really interesting and articulates much better than I can many of my concerns and fears. I can't name check you all, but it's faacinating and thoughtful reading.

Annunziata · 14/11/2014 22:01

They are just throwing their toys out of their pram. Thank God we don't have those two trying to negotiate for us internationally. No class and no tact.

They would have been calling for blood if it had been the other way around.

irishe · 14/11/2014 22:01

I live in Scotland, I think the SNP have a right to campaign for independence, that is their raison d'être after all.

I voted no and feel very strongly about remaining part of the UK. I only know one person who voted yes.

What has really annoyed me, (and many others I have spoken to) is the way the SNP has decided why I voted no, i.e. it was a last minute swing, bought by the promise of more devolved powers. How many times have I heard that the no vote was a vote for more powers? Eh, no it was not. My vote was a vote to stay within the UK, the status quo. My decision was made long before the last minute offers of further devolved powers. In fact I was hugely frustrated by the last ditch offer of further powers. I genuinely believe it was unnecessary and that the No vote would have won anyway.

I respect the right of anyone to want independence but I certainly don't feel as if my vote has been respected. The SNP PR machine has tried to turn it into something it wasn't.

SantanaLopez · 14/11/2014 22:06

YANBU.

Wellthatsit · 14/11/2014 22:07

Irishe, I wholeheartedly agree with everything you say.

trixymalixy · 14/11/2014 22:08

Totally agree with that Irishe, I was a strong No long before "the vow" and was similarly annoyed by it and felt it unnecessary.

What has also annoyed me since is the yes voters proclaiming that No voters are now regretting voting No. I'm certainly not, nor are any other no voters I've spoken to.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 14/11/2014 22:13

They are not throwing their toys out of the pram. They are continuing with their policy. It has always been their policy. Surely that's not news to anyone?

And what does class have to do with anything?

Annunziata · 14/11/2014 22:16

Of course they are throwing their toys out of the pram! They signed a deal saying that the vote would be final. They kept harping on about only having one chance. Now they can't even say that they lost.

Class in the sore loser way.

trixymalixy · 14/11/2014 22:19

Oh come on, Salmond totally threw his toys out of the pram after the referendum. He was nowhere to be seen, leaving Sturgeon to do the talking then he resigns and starts talking about taking independence anyway. He showed himself up big time.

Annunziata · 14/11/2014 22:20

Yes, that was a disgrace, trixy! I didn't think he should have resigned either.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 14/11/2014 22:21

What do you mean they signed a deal to say the vote was final? Genuinely don't know anything about that.

Do you mean they signed something to say there would never be another referendum?

I haven't heard of that.

tilliebob · 14/11/2014 22:22

Nodding along with everything trixy posts. The thought of another referendum fills me with horror. There's still neighbours, friends and relatives not speaking to each other around here. I'll never see some people in the same way again, and I don't mean that in a positive way.
