to really dislike, well abhor, violence on the telly

I have just had to bolt upstairs to bed because dp had flicked over to a film that was just starting and it had some sort of kidnap scenario going on.

Not all films affect me this way, just when the violence is personal. SOMETIMES i Enjoy a good thriller but will often have to switch off half way through as its too violent.

I clearly must BU becsuse film makers make millions of pounds making violent films.

I think this says worrying things about society or the human psyche or both.

then there are computor games. Wtf is that all about - mindless violence. Im not judging but i actually gound one game fp had really upsetting. That was on playstation 1 so hod knows what id be like with a modern version! !

Its only as ive got older that i feel this way. I suffer from anxiety, maybe that's why but really, shouldn't being upset by violence and killing be the norm?? Not the opposite

Whilst I can watch something such as Vikings, where the battle scenes are grim etc I can't stomach violence that has intention attracted to it or it's selected out for someone (does that make sense? It's possibly what you are saying about it being personal)

I agree with you- get v upset at even the thought of, say, young teens watching this stuff and am terrified they'll think this is normal/fine/non issue when really it should be seen as abhorrent.

I don't like violence but will just look away. The relaxation of attitudes towards porn worries me far more especially the implications for the next generation of teens/young people.

I am not judging it. It just really upsets me - i wish it didn't because i miss out on some good films.

Interesting point about the porn. I think i agree with you because of the fact that most porn tends to be pretty violent. Which is a shame really is sex is actually nice (weak adjective).

Nope, I'm with you too. Never used to be bothered by ANYTHING I watched (I LOVED SAW when I first watched it, couldn't go there now), but over the last 5 years or so I just can't stand watching violence or simulations of other people being in pain or loss. Complete turnaround. Completely limits what films I agree to watching . . . for me the sound effects are just as jarring so can't just look away.

I am with you. I cringe at the TV series and films that DH watches - latest was Game of Thrones and Medicus. If they're not killing each other they're chopping off hands or branding people with hot irons. What the hell?? DH looks at me like I'm mad and says "it's not real". But I can't get past the fact that those sorts of things did used to happen regularly, and similar things do still happen unfortunately. Why on earth would you watch it if you didn't have to?!

It seems to me that it's in virtually everything I try to watch these days. I end up covering my eyes in most things. Maybe I've just got more sensitive though.

Computer games can be and mostly are mindless especially once you've learned the basics. I've spent umpteen hours getting close to world records on games and the moment you start thinking, your screwed.

(obviously not all, but many many many are, same as films, books and many other past times)

the violence in films is sometimes -purposefully- a bit over the top but everyone has different thresholds for it. I think its a reflection of us as a species in general you don't get to the top of the tree by saying 'ahem, excuse me please' iyswim.
as for porn, you'd have to have watched all the porn to say most is violent.

Well I cant stand it on things like eastenders or on ads for shows before watershed...

Am in complete agreement, OP. Can anybody who watches such things justify to the rest of us why it is ok to find it 'entertaining' to see another human being mutilated horribly, or murdered??? And yes... Before any of you spout "oh, cakewitch, it's not real, you know!" yes... I do know. That is not the issue. So come on then?? Justify.

Sometimes yes, but mostly I'm bored of seeing it.

Bored of the violence, bored of the nudity, bored of the swearing. It's now really hard work to find something worth watching that hasn't sunk to these levels when I'm not in the mood for something like that.

Ah, gamerchick.. I just find it a distinctly odd thing about human nature, that we read the news and hear horrific stories daily about murder and atrocities and we feel quite rightly sad, yet can see the same things acted out in front of us, in a film, and view it as entertainment, and take pleasure from it?

We all find something odd about stuff we're not into personally. I certainly do

I don't connect the horribleness in the world to the films I watch or the games I play.. I enjoy them, they give me pleasure just like I'm sure you have things you like to do that give you pleasure.

Violence in tv, movies, games is fine by me but I am shocked that people will happily film car crashes, fights etc on their phones and put it online. Someone elses misfortune is not entertainment.
