I have just had to bolt upstairs to bed because dp had flicked over to a film that was just starting and it had some sort of kidnap scenario going on.

Not all films affect me this way, just when the violence is personal. SOMETIMES i Enjoy a good thriller but will often have to switch off half way through as its too violent.

I clearly must BU becsuse film makers make millions of pounds making violent films.

I think this says worrying things about society or the human psyche or both.

then there are computor games. Wtf is that all about - mindless violence. Im not judging but i actually gound one game fp had really upsetting. That was on playstation 1 so hod knows what id be like with a modern version! !

Its only as ive got older that i feel this way. I suffer from anxiety, maybe that's why but really, shouldn't being upset by violence and killing be the norm?? Not the opposite

I love films like Gangs of New York ...and enjoy Peaky Blinders.
Loathe rom com stuff or the gentle Miss Marple stuff.

MrsTerrorPratchett · 12/11/2014 20:55

I don't like it and oddly my job means I hear a fair amount more, and see a fair amount more, than most people of violence and abuse. I can't stand GoT, with the nasty, sexual violence and torture. Yuk.

Moln · 12/11/2014 20:59

it is Irina! It would make for a different Christmas special that is for sure, Tommy Shelby et al goes on holiday to Yorkshire - or maybe the Crawleys visit a friend in Sutton Coldfield , who has a new neighbour called Polly?

There's a programme on here (Ireland) called Late/Hate - it's a crime drama, focuses on the gangs, I can't stand it because I know what they portray actually happens.

Incredibly popular though (and well acted I can't deny)

MrsMook · 12/11/2014 21:15

I ended up leaving the room as I couldn't stand the sound effects on The Dark Knight. I was doing something else, but the constant sound of machine gunfire was horrible.
I find there's very little general interest TV and films at the moment.

LeBearPolar · 12/11/2014 21:19

Yes, the brutal rape in Downton Abbey was so relaxing in comparison to the sorts of programmes you're complaining about Hmm

LadyLuck10 · 12/11/2014 21:25

If you don't like it then you don't like it. Not sure what your post is about. There's many people who enjoy this sort of films. People have different tastes.. Well that's about everything though.

Ir1na · 12/11/2014 21:26

It would certainly be a VERY different series of Downton when the most of the Crawleys get beaten half to death. Or one of the ladies gets her face slashed and has to hide away afterwards, because people then were really horrible about disfigurement.

revealall · 12/11/2014 22:39

I hate it.

I can't understand the people that say It's not real". Seriously any nasty stuff that is shown in TV will be happening to some poor soul somewhere in the world right now. Why does anyone enjoy watching it? Would you watch it if it was real?

I don't mind people dying or being in accidents on TV as such but you really don't need to see it.

As for computer games did anyone hear about that father that said his children could only play the violent games they wanted, if he took them to see real war zones first? After visiting Israel and some other edges of conflict ( talking to local kids etc) the kids didn't want to know about the games.

gamerchick · 12/11/2014 22:56

Well I play the likes of dead island and left for dead. Can I go see some real zombie survival now please to put me off?

Ir1na · 12/11/2014 23:05

I don't mind people dying or being in accidents on TV as such but you really don't need to see it.
If it was a major part of the plot, wouldn't someone have to describe in detail what happened instead, just so that people understand what's going on?

AtlanticDrift · 12/11/2014 23:12

Yanbu. I'm a wimp when it comes to things like this.

Ir1na · 12/11/2014 23:14

I also don't think a medical drama or something like Homeland would work if everything was only implied. Hmm

duckbilled · 12/11/2014 23:36

I love American Horror Story. It is vile and disturbing at times BUT i enjoy how they explore human reactions to terrible events. To me it is escapism and entertainment, like going on a rollercoaster or waking through a haunted house.

NinjaLeprechaun · 12/11/2014 23:50

They sometimes use computer games to treat soldiers with PTSD. Apparently it helps because they can control - and change - the outcome.
Which makes perfect sense to me, and I don't even play.

WafflerCumIroner · 12/11/2014 23:54

I don't mind the violence.

It's the gratuitous bonking everywhere that gets me!

...and the way that in popular drama a person who is just a decent sort, is nice to people, doesnt cheat on their spouse or do other awful things, looks after/supports their family... is such a rare thing. I suppose they would be boring tv :(

Anyway, YANBU, we all have something that bothers us about modern tv I think.

Ir1na · 13/11/2014 00:24

People actually get taken to war zones to put them off games? I wish someone would try to "put me off" horror films then... Blush

Ir1na · 13/11/2014 00:25

Although, wandering around a war zone actually sounds MORE dangerous than the game would be!!

JCDenton · 13/11/2014 01:35

*Computer games can be and mostly are mindless especially once you've learned the basics. I've spent umpteen hours getting close to world records on games and the moment you start thinking, your screwed.

(obviously not all, but many many many are, same as films, books and many other past times)*

Maybe your idea of mindless is different to mine, I don't regard many books or films as mindless either. I was playing a racing sim yesterday and the act of learning the track and the way the car acts stops it from being mindless, if I was shooting for a world record I'd have to get into setting up the car which is something that requires your brain and today I've played Kerbal Space Program which has needs knowledge of orbital mechanics to play the game to the point that I needed tutorials and I have a physics degree.

zippey · 13/11/2014 02:11

I adore violence in movies and tv. Breaking Bad, Nightcrawler, horror movies... Violence isn't just there for entertainment. A lot of violence on screen makes you think about morals in storylines.

revealall · 13/11/2014 06:09

Sorry still don't get it.

I like sci fI and proper scary films. I really dislike the way Saw and the like are called horror films. It used to mean films that scare you not films that disgust you.
Zombies are a good case in point. Quite like the one with Will Smith. But have seen one that spent ages filming the zombies eating someone alive. How would you enjoy that especially with that case in the news last week?

PitchSlapped · 13/11/2014 06:41

If you dont play games you cant call them mindless (i dont mean shit like candy crush) most games take a certain skill level to play

revealall · 13/11/2014 06:42

I'm guessing vegetarians don't like films with lots of animals being killed though.
Since I can't human pain in real life ( couldn't be a doctor or dentist) perhaps it's the same thing.

gamerchick · 13/11/2014 06:54

Will Smith was in a zombie film?

ICanTotallyDance · 13/11/2014 07:02

I don't know. I really dislike very graphic movies and I struggle in films where the scene is very drawn out (e.g. Passion of the Christ) but on the other hand I don't find cartoon violence, comedic violence (e.g. Hot Fuzz), or small amounts of violence upsetting on tv. Usually if it's crucial to the plot, I don't mind, but if violence is the plot then I'm not keen.

In real life it is a different matter! I can't stand any amount of violence.

duckbilled · 13/11/2014 08:02

I think the will smith film is I am legend, which is actually about vampires. The film doesn't convey this very well though, the book, although a short read, is very good.
