I have just had to bolt upstairs to bed because dp had flicked over to a film that was just starting and it had some sort of kidnap scenario going on.

Not all films affect me this way, just when the violence is personal. SOMETIMES i Enjoy a good thriller but will often have to switch off half way through as its too violent.

I clearly must BU becsuse film makers make millions of pounds making violent films.

I think this says worrying things about society or the human psyche or both.

then there are computor games. Wtf is that all about - mindless violence. Im not judging but i actually gound one game fp had really upsetting. That was on playstation 1 so hod knows what id be like with a modern version! !

Its only as ive got older that i feel this way. I suffer from anxiety, maybe that's why but really, shouldn't being upset by violence and killing be the norm?? Not the opposite

I love gory horror films! Films and computer games are a safe outlet for our base human desires aren't they? Human beings have been extremely savage and vicious long before the media was invented, you could say it's part of our natural make up. Far better to deal with those feelings by shooting people on the X box than being aggressive in real life.

So why do people want to play these games? See, i'd quite like a "shaun of the dead" game.

Look up "Dead Rising", very gory zombie game and doesn't take itself seriously one bit, truly difficult, though.

For me, I play games because they interact with me, I have a choice of what to do and which decisions I make, I particularly enjoy games where the story radically changes depending on your actions or you can approach a task in multiple ways or you can build something unique to yourself. I also enjoy playing sport and board games so it must just be that a part of my personality really enjoys being an active participant rather than passively watching something.

I'm with you, OP. I think the casual presentation of horrific violence can serve to desensitise viewers. I really don't want to watch gratuitous (albeit simulated) violence as entertainment. While any sort of dramatic representation may well include violent incidents and I see nothing wrong with that when it is an integral part of the story, there are ways of presenting material that do not depend on extreme images of gore. The trend toward the latter is quite disturbing IMO (and quite often just a lazy form of storytelling). If you compare the images that were acceptable onscreen a few decades ago with those we regularly see now, it is quite a contrast.

YANBU OP. I get physical symptoms if I see a horrific torture scene. Sweaty palms etc and often can't forget the images for days. Even if it is just a quick glance when flicking through TV channels. I know that I couldn't sit through The Passion of Christ for all of the money in the world.

JCDenton · 17/11/2014 15:08

I don't like computer games at all. I don't see the point in them and they do not interest me in the slightest. In fact I pretty much detest them

That's a bit like detesting TV or Radio or Film, though. Games are a diverse medium which deal with a huge range of themes, not just shootmans.

I see what you mean now, detesting consuming the media rather than just the idea of it.

solidussnake · 17/11/2014 16:33

the films i watch are violent, and strange, and creepy, and weird.
the video games I play are creepy, and strange, and violent and weird.
I'm not a creepy/violent/weird/scary person
And the porn I watch isn't violent. I do not engage in violent sex or anything.
violence in films and games really doesn't bother me at all. I can watch most things with a straight face. in real life it bothers me. I don't like seeing violent porn, thats why I don't search for it. simple.
At the minute I am in the middle of completing all my pokémon games as DP is buying me the new one for christmas. I'm also playing Silent Hill 3 and will be buying a PSP to play Silent Hill Origins. Violent, and can be considered cruel, but a fuckin' good story. it's absolutely sensational.
The common misconception with games is that they are ALL violent. Nahhh have you played mariokart? the game ain't violent, but the fights after rainbow road with your friends are. Good way to lose friends, that game Grin
The games I play have amazing stories but unfortunately, the warnings say "some elements of this game can be considered violent or cruel" and they are upsetting, and they do play on your mind -its what makes the games the best thing since sliced bread, imo. :D
All films aren't violent. All games aren't either, and neither is every porn video.

I do get your meaning now, yes. I would say I'm indifferent to craft myself, DP is the crafty one in our house [grim]

I think sometimes that if you are not a gamer you see a different image of the game than the person playing does.

When I am playing a game that involves killing, I am not really thinking that I am murdering people I am trying to achieve an outcome in a game, nothing more. It's not real and I don't feel like it is real in my mind.

Just as if I am playing a golf game I don't feel like I'm really playing golf.
