I have just had to bolt upstairs to bed because dp had flicked over to a film that was just starting and it had some sort of kidnap scenario going on.

Not all films affect me this way, just when the violence is personal. SOMETIMES i Enjoy a good thriller but will often have to switch off half way through as its too violent.

I clearly must BU becsuse film makers make millions of pounds making violent films.

I think this says worrying things about society or the human psyche or both.

then there are computor games. Wtf is that all about - mindless violence. Im not judging but i actually gound one game fp had really upsetting. That was on playstation 1 so hod knows what id be like with a modern version! !

Its only as ive got older that i feel this way. I suffer from anxiety, maybe that's why but really, shouldn't being upset by violence and killing be the norm?? Not the opposite

How do people feel about Tom and Jerry? That gets pretty violent at times

gamerchick · 13/11/2014 08:10

Ahh... I am legend isn't a zombie film, vampires would be a closer match. I thought there had been a film I hadn't seen yet I love will Smith Grin

poolomoomon · 13/11/2014 08:35

Well to me a horror film is supposed to horrify. Horrors are almost always violent, scary and gory. Thrillers are slightly softer around the edges, not so gory but still can equally be as scary. I think thrillers make you think more, horrors just make you grimace, hide behind your cushion and sometimes scream Grin. That's my interpretation anyway.

I love horror/thriller movies, my favourite genre. Though I confess I prefer older ones so not quite as gory as Saw and the likes. I did quite enjoy the first three saw movies though. I like reading thriller fiction also. But I can separate that from real life atrocities, I know it's not real so therefore find it entertaining. I don't watch the news and find it entertaining and enjoyable that people or animals are being murdered Hmm. It's easy to separate it in my mind. That's fake blood and actors that are getting paid= entertainment. That's real life, horrific and makes me want to cry- save their souls. Make sense?

I agree with you, OP. And it's not a distinct issue from porn, either, for me - an awful lot of mainstream TV and film has sexualised violence towards women as a motivating, central plot point.

The Fall, whose first season did very well in viewer numbers and reviews, is back for a second season, but I found the first season unwatchably violent. I'm no fragile flower, and I grew up in a pretty rough part of town, but why in God's name would anyone derive enjoyment from watching a TV series where the end of the first episode involves a close-up - so close we can see her pores and sweat and listen to her struggling to breathe through a gag - of the leisurely rape and strangulation of a young female solicitor by a man who's signalled his intentions by arranging her underwear and a sex toy on her bed?

I think it horrifies me more because this wasn't some throwaway horror flick, but a critically-acclaimed, well-written mainstream TV series, with excellent writing and acting, and a female lead - yet there's no interrogation at all of the fact that this presents rape and murder of women as entertainment.

Ir1na · 15/11/2014 00:05

Realistic villains are OF COURSE going to kill people in a realistic way! The guy in The Fall is totally evil, I would have a problem if he was made really sympathetic/likeable but he isn't IMO.

Legohair · 15/11/2014 00:37

I don't think anyone's questioning the realism, it's more wondering why graphic violence, and specifically sexual violence, is so often presented as entertainment. Clearly there's a market, but why do people - why do women - enjoy it?

MQv2 · 15/11/2014 01:34

Can't speak for women but violence, within the context of a well drawn character (think Pesci in goodfellas or norton in american history x) is just pure escapism.
It's a world ill never know properly but at the same time there's a flicked of something you can recognise.
As though they're operating without a filter of fear of consequence.
Michael douglas in falling down type thing, what would happen if I just let go.

The human centipedes stuff I just don't get, but tbf the first saw wasn't bad but still wasn't my cup of tea. But at least it has some sort of psychological "how far would you go to survive" element. But generally gore for horse said doesn't do it for me.

But violence in a story where violence has consequences or the characters detachment from reality is what sets him apart can just be interesting.

So when begby smashes a glass over a woman's face or stags a guy in a bar, it's not that those acts themselves are objectively entertaining. If you showed me a vibe of just the violence with no context I'd have no interest. But as a means of showing what a fucking psycho Begbie is, then the character just becomes more interesting.

MQv2 · 15/11/2014 01:36

*Gore for gores sake

Good old phone posting

scousadelic · 15/11/2014 01:38

I hate it too. I was watching some programme earlier about CCTV helping with crime and found it quite upsetting watching some idiots hitting someone to the ground and stamping on them. Shameful and sickening

messyisthenewtidy · 15/11/2014 07:42

"Ah, gamerchick.. I just find it a distinctly odd thing about human nature, that we read the news and hear horrific stories daily about murder and atrocities and we feel quite rightly sad, yet can see the same things acted out in front of us, in a film, and view it as entertainment, and take pleasure from it?"

This. 100%

lylasmam2012 · 15/11/2014 08:20

When I watch violence on TV, it upsets me, lead up to violence makes me tense and on edge. These are all feelings I don't feel normally and are part of the roller coaster ride I want my TV and movies to bring me on. I don't want horror films, but I adore stuff like Peaky Blinders, LOVE/HATE (although I don't like the jokes about poor Fran)z

wannabestressfree · 15/11/2014 08:33

I am quite happy for others to watch it I just struggle with violence real or not. I watched the mummy a few years ago and it traumatised me ...... I over think things and kept asking my exh death related questions.
I know life is not all frilly and soft. I was brought up in a household with some domestic violence and both my brother and I were punched and kicked. If I hear someone crying on the tv - out in fear or pain- it just reduces me to jelly.
Probs need therapy :/

gamerchick · 15/11/2014 09:04

Ah I would love to put a gore fest on right now.. hunker down for the day. My sort of Saturday Grin

lemisscared · 15/11/2014 11:33

Someone upthread, sorry, can't remember who it was now said that i shouldn't call violent computor games mindless and I have to concede that because most of the "gamers" I know are highly intelligent. It must reach a different bit of their brain becuase its lost on me. I like the escape the room games because there's no fighting. I actually wish i could get drawn into these games because it would get me off mumsnet

So why do people want to play these games?

See, i'd quite like a "shaun of the dead" game.

OP posts:
gamerchick · 15/11/2014 11:54

What would a shaun of the dead game have in it?

lemisscared · 15/11/2014 12:01

Oh it would be brilliant :) There would be zombies (obviously) Extra points for winning back your ex, points for killing phillip, and the ultimate destination: The Winchester for a pint, to wait til it all blows over! Short cuts over back garden fences of course "have you never taken a short cut before" ...............I may have watched this film too much. Can pick up weapons en route - old naff vinyl records, base-ball bat. Extra points for crashing Phil's Jag. You know when you are dangerously out of life as "you've got red on you" will flash up on the screen.

I'm with you, OP.

I had the mother of all rows with ex-h when he sat me down to watch the 'hilarious' Fargo.

The most revolting thing I've ever seen.

I can't get past that this awful stuff is probably happening to someone in the world for real, just as I'm sitting in my nice safe house in my pjs watching it on the telly.

I get particularly upset by humans who are in fear - like the slave who wets himself at the beginning of Gladiator, or that poor woman who is tangled up in the shower curtain trying to run for her life in Fargo.

It just really upsets me Hmm

If you expected others to feel the same you'd be UR, but as it stands, No. You like what you like. Don't feel put out because others like what you hate. (I can't stand TOWIE &c but they are huge)

gamerchick · 15/11/2014 18:45

well did you make it to the winchester OP? I died a fair amount Grin

syne · 16/11/2014 14:54
